This is crazy. The local news in my city has spoken about this morning. Its constantly been on ESPN throughout the day. Celebrities are still arguing with common folk about it on Twitter. This controversity just made Floyds next fight that much bigger. Rather its a rematch, Khan, or Pacquiao.
On Twitter "Mayweather" "Ortiz" "Larry Merchant" STILL trending in over a dozen cities in the US.
I appreciate you wanting boxing to be seen as some noble and gentlemanly sport, but boxing has always been a carnival act.
Just because a man is incredibly trained and skilled doesn't make the sport itself more noble.
I love the sport, not the boxers. Boxing, regardless of who is the most popular and how they carry themselves, has always needed the help of the barker .. you know .. the man on the soapbox with the megaphone. If it didn't, King and Arum couldn't exist.
There is nothing classy about getting punched in the face. There is nothing regal about getting knocked out. Only true fans fans appreciate the artistry of styles. Anyone can appreciate personalities, but make no mistake its the personalities that sell the tickets, not the style.
Case in point: Larry Holmes. Larry Holmes was perhaps the best HW ever. He is highly underrated and his skills were some of the most formidable of any man to ever put on the gloves.
Yet Don King said it best: People would rather watch Ali watching a boxing match on TV than watch Holmes fight in the ring.
A true fan doesn't need to know a thing about a boxer to appreciate a display of the science, as long as the fighter is fundamentally sound. A true fan looks for subtleties and nuances that the casual fan will miss because he's looking only for big shots and slug fests.
A true fan will look for timing, he'll look at footwork, he'll look at how a fighter paces himself, he'll look at how a fighter manages to get back outside after unloading a flurry on the inside. A true fan looks for feints and how well a fighter uses them. He looks for a fighter to double and triple up on the jab. He looks for a fighter to hook off the jab.
A true fan is interested in what the corner is telling their fighter. He's even more interested in a fighter's breathing in between rounds. A true fans spends time getting to know the tell tale signs of trouble on the horizon, and then appreciates how well a fighter can mask those signs during the next round.
Casual fans are looking for brawls and knockouts. They are chanting their favorite fighters names while the true fan just wants it quiet to study everything.
Pacquiao fans are casual fans. We can all appreciate Pacquiao's success, but not all of us will call a mule a thoroughbred. Pacquiao has done some impressive things, but most have been through special conditions like vacant tiles which allowed him to avoid champions, and catchweights that did NOT allow his opponents to be at their very best.
His skillset is NOT impressive, but his work-rate is inhuman. That's how Pacquiao wins his fights: He doesn't outbox anyone really. He outworks them by a mile. And its really, really fun to watch, but in past years its a bit annoying because he wants to be seen as the best but won't fight the best while they still are the best.
Fighting a guy who has been dethroned for name recognition isn't fooling any true fan. We all like to watch Pacquiao do his thing, but unless his thing becomes facing the #1, 2 & 3 guys in a division, he'll just be an entertainer and not a top fighter. Just because some boxing writers have kind words for him and shower him with media based accolades doesn't make him the best.
History certainly won't be as kind as today's writers.
All fans want to see Mayweather/Pacquiao, but only true fans know that Floyd doesn't need Pacquiao. Before Pacquiao ever came up to WW Floyd was already P4P#1, the #1 WW and a HOF. Floyd had done everything he said he would do YEARS ago. Everything after DLH was just bonus material. He was supposed to retire. True fans know that Floyd spent the past 11 years at the top of the sport dominating all comers. Arum himself called him greater than Ali.
Once Floyd had come up from SFW to jrMW, he had done everything that he ever said that he wanted to.
Of course, the casual fans barked that Floyd hadn't done enough even though no active boxer had done more against better opposition including BHOP.
The new "breed' of fans, mainly pactards, hated that Floyd was so skilled and so accomplished that Manny Pacquiao was living in his shadow. Floyd had only been gone for 2008, but they exaggerate and say "years" because they need to make it seem as though Floyd somehow ducked people, even though he had beaten the #1 WW.
True fans remember all of that.
Casual fans try to be witty and clever because they are forced to use sarcasm in place of substance in conversations about who is boxing's MVP.
In the end, passed all of the insults, jokes and opinions .. boxing's MVP is the man who has consistently fought the #1, 2 & 3 and come out victorious EVERY time. Boxing's MVP is the man who just fought a fighter who is 10 years younger and weighed 16lbs heavier and was the #2 WW WBC champion of the world. Boxing's MVP is the man who brings millions of new fans to the sport BEFORE he ever even steps into the ring. The people want to see this man. They want to hear his words, his thought and see his desire to win in the ring.
Who else can you say this about? Who else brings this kind of intrigue, negative or positive? Who else can talk that much sh!t and back it up? Who else could stand in front of Ortiz and let punches miss and bounce off of him?
It isn't about Floyd Mayweather the man. Its about Floyd Mayweather's skills! His skills are half man, half amazing. I agree that trading is exciting, but as a student of the game watching the science put on display in the heat of battle right in the other fighter's face is the highest form of pugilism. Casual fans will NEVER get that until its too late and they have to watch this man on tape.
You're witnessing a talent that you won't see again for decades and every pactard out there is sittin' on the dock near the bay .. wasting time.
Its a shame, but they were never here to appreciate the science anyway. They were here for one and only one personality.
And that is the tragedy of the casual fan.
I was talking about the casual sports fan, not the casual boxing fan. I was talking about people that follow all the major sports and didn't even know who Victor Ortiz was. Boxing has lost sports fans, but you seem to be more upset at the quality of fans we already have.
So "Pactards" are hurting the sport of boxing? But you brag about PBF bringing in millions of new fans. What's the difference? Floyd fans are good for boxing, but "Pactards" are bad?
I guess I have real trouble believing it when you talk about loving the sport and then say Pacquiao's skill set is not impressive. So what, he's just a journeyman with a high work rate? Do you understand why PBF has made the request to have Pacquiao tested when he has never asked for that before? Isn't it because he thinks that Pacquiao's skill set and resume is so impressive that it has to be caused by performance enhancing drugs?
I appreciate you wanting boxing to be seen as some noble and gentlemanly sport, but boxing has always been a carnival act.

Great ****ing post.
You should be a boxing writer for real...
The general people are retards...LOL They elected a president that gave non words to them "HOPE" and "CHANGE"
THE GENERAL PEOPLE REALLY BELIEVE THAT MAYWEATHERS PERSONALITY IS LIKE THE CHARACTER HE CREATED CALLED "MONEY MAYWEATHER" As a matter of fact he told the general public it was just a character an they still believe hes like that just as you do, because you are the foolish sheeple general public.
The general public also drink tap water, and eat fast food daily.
The general public also look up to athletes as role models and as heroes, and let their children look up to athletes for guidance.
The general public also thought that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction.....
The general public still believe there is not a military base installation called area 51...
ALL YOU PEASANTS ARE SHEEP.
You are the best example of those stupid people.
It's the truth, it's done more good than harm, at least for Floyd that is. It's attracted major attention, this obviously wouldn't have been the case had Mayweather won in his usual fashion.
Floyd's appeal is being hated. Now more people hate him and more people want to see him lose.
A lot of people are calling it dirty and cheap, and I would agree, you shouldn't hug a guy and use the opportunity to throw a quick left-right. I actually don't have too big a problem with the left, as bad as that sounds, it was the right that I thought was surely unwarranted even if time was in and you just got head butted...it's just not the way any fight should end. With that being said, I think as much as Floyd might contest being called dirty, I think he likes it. Floyd is, frankly, an attention whore, this is heaven for him. We may never know how many people order his fights to see him lose, but I'm sure it's near half, at the end of the day they're still paying customers and this could add to it :boxing:
people are talking about him, true, but do you think they will pay to see the same bs again? When you duped people, do you think they will let you fool them again? One has to be very stupid to let himself be sucker punched twice.
ha ha ha that's pun-ny, sucker punched twice lolz
The general people are retards...LOL They elected a president that gave non words to them "HOPE" and "CHANGE"

So was it Floyds boxing character that has him being twice convicted for beating women?
Or is his character make up that of someone with deep seeded emotional problems because he isn't accepted the way he wants to be?
That is not a character you see on 24/7.
Its the same person we seen on ustream.
Too bad everyone wants him to fight Pac now again and he will find another way to avoid the fight. Probably retire, that's when Ortiz, bitter about not getting his promised rematch with Floyd, comes out and says that Floyd paid him to take a dive and promised him a rematch.
That is what Ive been saying he is going to sell more than ever if he fights. He is bringing a WWF circus in the mix and ppl are buying it.
Love him or hate him he got everybody talking about him. He is going to be remembered into the future with this fight.
People are talking about him, true, but do you think they will pay to see the same bs again? When you duped people, do you think they will let you fool them again? One has to be very stupid to let himself be sucker punched twice.
All the casual sports fans I hear talking about it are laughing about it. Laughing at boxing.
The irony is that the only new fans this will bring in are WWF fans that want to watch Floyd to see if he will do some crazy **** next time. The exact opposite of true boxing fans that can appreciate his incredible skill at the sweet science. They want to watch just like they wanted to watch the aging Tyson. To see a side show freak, not to watch boxing.
When I try to explain to people why I am still a fan of boxing they all talk about how great it used to be and how much of a joke it is now. This incident just makes them think boxing is a bigger joke than they thought.
The idea that so many people on here are saying that "true boxing fans" wouldn't be upset about the fight is oxymoronic. This fight just pushed boxing further out of the mainstream, not back into the limelight it once had.
Yeah, next time they serve you that line....ask them some questions about boxing and see how much they really know. It's a go-to line with someone who really has nothing to say.
This "boxing used to be great" line is so old, been said in every generation, and is just apart of the way it always will be.
So you're saying Floyd couldn't beat him with his artful skills?
I thought he was this eras best?
You cats change your stances every single week according to what Floyd is doing.
Btw, he didn't have a problem when Judah made "it a fight."
Just sayin
If Judah went out there with his hands down he would have been clocked too
If you want to complain about someone ruining the fight, whine about Ortiz
Why should he get honorable knockout when he was fighting with no honor
He fought like a *****, and got knocked out like a *****
There you go again more upset with the one that did something legal, then the one that did multiple headbutts and rabbit punches. Now if you showed more or just as much anger at Ortiz I wouldnt have a problem, with your stance. But you dont.
don't be a fukkin idiot!!!
ortiz is lowlife scum too!!! he tried to headbutt wifebeater on multiple occasions... no doubt he was told in training to do that..
but ortiz was deducted a point already! wifebeater didn't have to suckerpunch him...
flomos need to stop being defensive and look at this shiet unbiasedly... both guys were classless and cortez is incompetant
ortiz already got a point deducted for headbutting... but wifebeater made the fight even more classless by suckerpunching ortiz. 2 wrongs don't make a right dumb azz flomos
There you go again more upset with the one that did something legal, then the one that did multiple headbutts and rabbit punches. Now if you showed more or just as much anger at Ortiz I wouldnt have a problem, with your stance. But you dont.
Without Floyd Boxing would be a minority sport like Bowls or something gay like that
Where was this OTT reaction when Pacdroid REFUSED PROPER drug testing
flomos are so fukkin dumb...
all the sports radio peeps are ragging on boxing because wifebeater is lowlife scum, not because they think boxing is on it's way up...
get your head out of your azz.
