What I always found odd about Tyson is how lazy he was in the clinch. When he got inside he just didnt seem to want to fight inside . Its not that Tyson couldnt fight inside, against Ruddock for example he did some great work inside on Ruddocks body but thats the only fight I remember from Tyson of really fighting great inside . Tyson had short arms and was a great body puncher so he should of being able to fight inside as good as Joe Frazier but for some reason he couldnt or maybe couldnt. What do you think?.
So your saying his height stopped him from being a great inside fighter . Thats not true because Frazier was the exact same height as tyson and he was a great inside fighter.
he was small enough at the height of the shoulder than most guys could just throw an arm over him and tie him up
he wanted to be just outside of that range (where he can be tied up)
so he's not really an infighter
he wants to keep his hands free.
if he's in a clinch he's usually working against gravity (these guys can lean on him and he cant lean on them)
so he can let the ref break them
and he can go back to where he does his best work
which is when he's coming in and using feints and head movement to get inside of opponents offense but far enough away to get max leverage on his punches and keep those hands free

The uppercut was almost exclusively delivered from the inside.
I can’t think of many HW’s that were as prolific with the uppercut than Mike, most don't have anything that even resembles an inside game.
Ah my bad then sorry and yeah you're right, Mike could of become a tremendous infighter especially with that uppercut in his arsenal, Bowe (Didn't use it nearly as much as he should), Johnson, Louis maybe had a better uppercut on the inside or one at least as good, can't think of many more then that though.

Ah sorry then my bad, yeah you're right, Mike could of been a tremendous inside boxer especialy with the uppercut, Jack Johnson comes to mind when thinking of firing it off from the inside, Riddick Bowe as well had just as good an but didn't use it nearly as much as he should of.
I seen 1 of them performed out of the clinch, video isn't of much use.

Did Tyson have the potential to be a great infighter?.

in his early days he flurried to the body in clinches..after cus died.....his career dies
not quite right...he was still awesome and in his prime with his old team...but after he fired them all after the Spinks fight at that point his career was over...so much waisted talent i still could cry about it :frown:
Tyson never knew what to do when clinched. Not only that, he would get tied up, start wrestling with his arms and get completely frustrated. I never understood how no trainer managed to correct that.
Tyson is more of a mid range fighter, and he always had problem when fighting inside or in the clinch. He is just not good on the inside that's why Douglas and Holyfield bullied him inside.
Tyson never clinched...it's like he felt it was illegal and just didn't do it. He had a tendency to just stand there when he got hurt...if he had clinched he might have avoided some of his KO's losses.
But ear crunches are legal? I do think he might have good chance at the Clits.

I think he used to conserve energy since his stamina wasn't the best. Just neutralise the opponent and catch your breath a bit and go back to bobing and weaving.
