It's time for this bout to be set, there are no obstacles between either fighter. Who you got?
Of course imma pick Mikey, not only cause one faves, but his style would cause some trouble for Gamboa, I actually think he's more precise than Gamboa.
What you think?
Yea man been busy at the gym. I got a new gig at a pro gym and been busy basically 6 days a week. A lot of responsibility.
I think you are right about this fight though, even though we never know with a fighter like Mikey. I just love his seriousness, patience and the way he just methodically breaks guys down without rushing anything or worrying about the score cards.
That's something that's hard to teach.
Yeah, I figured it had something to do with work. Life gets in the way, right? Hope your new gig goes well! :fing02:
I like some of the same things about Mikey. There's something reminiscent about Salvador Sanchez in him....
Haven't been seeing you around, Cuauhtémoc. Good to see you again!
Mikey is impressive. He's still very young, so he's got plenty of time to grow into his ultimate potential. I think that's saying quite a bit. Garcia also appears to be a genuinely good kid with great work habits. There's a lot to like about him.
Miguel's power is a weapon against any fighter. Gamboa will have to avoid getting hit flush (because he will get hit). He'll have to keep Garcia busy with his furious speed and combinations. It'll be tough for Mikey to put his punches together against Yuriorkis, since he'll have to respect his power as well.
Gamboa's style relies on his crazy natural gifts. Athleticism and speed are very time sensitive attributes, though. Yuri will be thirty in December, so I see his shelf-life as very limited. Right now, Gamboa's natural abilities should carry the day versus Garcia. Perhaps not so in a couple of years.

I just hope Arum doesn't pussyfoot with this fight like he did with Juan Ma and Gamboa. Maybe Garcia and Gamboa fight a couple more fights until then, but strike the iron while it's hot.
I have to agree with you Cuban. Early on when he was down it was obvious he was a poorly balanced fighter who kept his hands down and wasn't really doing what he needed to do fundamentally.
Mikey has pop, that's why I said his chin would be in question. We know Mikey can take a serious shot just like his brother but I haven't seen Gamboa get hit like that by a fighter of Mikey's size and power.
Like I said, it would be interesting style wise. Right now I would give the edge to Gamboa but Mikey is progressing so fast it's scary. He is methodical in breaking opponents down, goes to the body extremely well and is so, so patient. I love that about the kid.

I think the fight would be more even than people think. Gamboa tends to fight with his amateur days at times and Mikey has the pro style to give him trouble. Gamboa would need to be on the bike and fight a perfect in and out fight to win, but will have trouble when they go tow to tow as his chin is not as strong as his legs.
Mikey also has a better corner for the fight, one that will be looking to capitalize on his amateur mistakes.
This IMO would be a 50-50 fight depending on who sets the tempo and pace.
Gamboa was off-balance as he was moving to his left, when he was caught by the Jimenez right (as pointed out by Lennox Lewis). I think that, of the four knockdowns, the strongest case can be made that Yuri was hurt (by a legal blow). As you stated, that shot on the ear may have affected his equilibrium. It's a judgement call. I won't say you're wrong, but I'm not ready to concede you're right, either.

Boxing is a business. When he says a fighter "isn't ready" that's not always indicative of ability. It's indicative of marketability.
Gamboa/Garica right now isn't a big fight to the public. Ponce De Leon has been on HBO way more times than Garcia and is less of a threat....of course they went with that fight over Garica. We know how Arum works...there's no need to have one of his young guys beat another one of his young guys when he gets individual HBO pay days for Gamboa and he will soon with Garcia. That's how he looks at things.
When they said he was not ready, they were talking about ability not marketability, that was clear, even the second ranked at the time said he wasn't ready for Gamboa, that is why uncle Bob didn't let Gamboa show up for his IBF weight in, now that Gamboa is out of the IBF picture #1 contender Mickey Garcia has a clear path to the Belt and uncle Bob has another Mexican-American fighter on "top", he has not face any elite fighter and there is a reason for it, they trying to make him the Arums version of Canelo.
I think Garcia is willing to move up to chase a fight with Gamboa.
The way Mikey's brother is talking, it appears that way. I hope it happens. I would love to see the result.
tough fight, i like both guys but i'm going to have to go with gamboa. i think he's a lot more experienced and could handle garcia. would love to see this happen, but don't think it will
Garcia is untested by anyone on elite or really good level. Everyone is drinking the kool-aid because he beat Remillard and KO'd Guzman and Martinez in 4 rounds. Remillard was nothing more than another untested fighter stepping up. A solid win, not really good or great. Garcia should fight Russell first, another untested fighter who needs to step up.
Fight won't happen, Gamboa is on his way to 130 and 135. Too bad Lopez got KO'd by Salido, that was looking to be a huge fight at 126, and now it most likely won't happen for awhile, if at all.
Gamboa beats Garcia by UD. Around 117-111 or 116-112.
I think he was hurt by that right hand from Jimenez that landed behind the ear. Everybody knows that when you get hit in that spot it affects your equilibrium.

Show a vid of any of the kds where Gamboa is hurt.Mikey still aint ready for Gamboa why not try and fight someone like De Leon and see how he gets on
Naive? No. Three of Gamboa's knockdowns involved balance issues. One (Ramirez) involved a blow to the back of the neck, followed by an elbow. See for yourself:
From about 4:14.
From about 2:27.
From about 5:04.
From about 1:05.
In none of these clips is Gamboa visibly hurt, in my opinion.
"In & out athletic fighter" is not a recognized boxing style. I used the term "swarmer" as the closest known style to describe Gamboa. I agree, however, with your description.

Garcia-Salido should happen first so we can gauge where Mikey's at.
That would be a tough fight for the young Garcia. Salido is a blue collar champ. "Siri" came up the hard way. He's hard as nails, has a rough and tumble style and isn't about to give up his hard earned title easily. I lean toward Salido in that match-up.
Come on now. You can say it's a combination of balance and being hurt but to blame it all on bad balance is just naive.

Gamboa a swarmer? I don't think so. He fights mostly from the outside and jumpis in & out with combos, he's not a swarmer, more like an in & out athletic fighter.

Gamboa has been down four times. All his KDs are attributable to being out of balance. Yuri has never been hurt by a punch.

I regard Gamboa as a swarmer. He pot-shots from time to time, but he normally closes the distance delivering combinations with blazing hand-speed.
