Floyd Mayweather Senior: “They ain’t looking at him as being ‘Pretty Boy’ Floyd or the ‘Money’ Mayweather—they’re looking at him as being the ‘A*shole of the Year’!”
by Geoffrey Ciani (Exclusive Interview by Jenna J & Geoffrey Ciani) - This week’s 139th edition of On the Ropes Boxing Radio (brought to you by CWH Promotions) featured an exclusive interview with boxing trainer Floyd Mayweather Senior who recently had a heated encounter with his son Floyd Mayweather Junior on HBO’s first episode of 24/7 in promotion of the highly anticipated September 17 bout between Mayweather (41-0, 25 KOs) and WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-2-2, 22 KOs). Mayweather Senior gave his take on the altercation and also shared views on a variety of other issues. Here is a complete transcript from that interview:
JENNA J: It is time for our third and final guest of this week’s show. He is making his 13th appearance with On the Ropes Boxing Radio. We are joined by the one and only Floyd “Joy” Mayweather Senior. How’s the day treating you Floyd?
FLOYD MAYWEATHER SENIOR: Everything is going great.
JENNA: Alright Floyd, well people have been talking about the incident that happened between you and your son on the HBO 24/7 series. Can you tell us in your view what happened with that whole situation?
MAYWEATHER: It was nothing but just a father and a son thing. He’s just disrespectful. He’s ungrateful. All I can do is leave it up to the higher power. That’s all I do. I can’t judge my son in no kind of way or anything like that. But like I said, one thing I can do is go on about my business, take care of my business, and whatever happens with it, let him do what he’s got to do for himself. I don’t really want to bother with him as being a son like that.
JENNA: How long ago did that incident happen between you two?
MAYWEATHER: It happened about, right now it’s going on about two weeks now. It’s going on about two weeks since that happened.
JENNA: Now the 24/7 cameras really didn’t capture how it really all started. Was it really just a debate over two female fighters or was it something more?
MAYWEATHER: Well first of all, the one guy Tim Coleman used to train at the gym. My brother used to train Tim Coleman, and my fighter knocked Tim Coleman out! My boy knocked him out. My boy was named Vernon Paris. Vernon Paris knocked out Tim Coleman. If you remember seeing the fight on ESPN when the guy kept hitting him with the body shots, and the guy kept going down, and the referee just called it off. You might not remember. That fight was probably about five weeks ago.
JENNA: Yep, that was a great performance by Paris. You trained him well.
MAYWEATHER: Yeah, uh-huh. Me and Roger wasn’t in the corner, but I was explaining to you who was the coach of each fighter, in which I was the coach that won when it happened like that. The whole thing is that he just starts saying I was jealous of him. I’m not jealous of him. Jealous of him for what? If you’re talking about money, I’m not jealous because of money! That’s your money. You made that money! I taught you how to make that money. You wouldn’t have that if it weren’t for your Daddy. I’m just saying that it is what it is. You got to leave things like that in the Man’s hands is all. You can’t do anything about that. Leave those things in the Higher Power’s hands because in the Ten Commandments it tells you, “Honor thy mother and father or things will be short”. So I don’t have anything to do with that. The only thing I can tell you is I honor my mother and father, and I’m not even going to tell you that both of them were the better parents than a lot of people, but I still honored him because he was my father. In this case right here, this guy is old enough to know everything that’s going on. What he did then with me, that’s against the cardinal rule.
JENNA: Now when this was all going down how close do you think you two maybe were coming to going to blows over this argument?
MAYWEATHER: Very close! As close as he wanted to get! One damn thing is for sure, his Daddy wasn’t going to back down and his Daddy wasn’t going to take no ass-whopping! So that right there tells you. If his Daddy ain’t going to take no ass-whopping it must tell you who was going to get the ass-whopping! It wasn’t going to be me, so that kind of tells you what was going to happen right there. He might think he was going to tee off on his Daddy and do this. I got too much to live for that mess.
JENNA: Now you mentioned before how a son should honor his father.
MAYWEATHER: Yes!
JENNA: What do you think about his attitude towards you in the gym there and the way he was talking to you. Do you think that’s maybe him getting a little bit of an ego with himself?
MAYWEATHER: Oh! He’s got an ego! He’s got an ego! He goes way beyond the meaning of everything they call an ego. He’s way above that. So what you call an “ego”, he goes way above that! I don’t know what the word “ego” means. He was way above that. He’s got something multiplied by two, so I don’t know where he is. He’s way beyond the word “ego”. I don’t know what the word, but whatever it is, like I told him he let a situation get out of hand that shouldn’t have never got out of hand about boxing—girl’s boxing! A bunch of girls boxing? Man, please!
The girl, his fighter, she’s not a bad girl either. But we were talking about them fighting each other and having his girl fight my girl, then all of a sudden he goes, “Well what are you doing in this gym for?”
“What do you mean what in the hell am I doing in the gym? It’s me!”
My thing was really just coming there to support him, that’s all. You know what? He brought trouble to his Daddy. You know what? He’s going to have to deal with that, not me.
JENNA: Floyd, your son has been going through a lot of legal turmoil in the last fifteen months. Now do you think that this situation that happened with you was a culmination of everything that’s been happening to him?
