he cud have fought soto after he beat bobby pac, @ 130 or fought guzman. instead he fought barrera, again. Guzman was the 130 wbo champ at the time when pac elected to fight barrera again @ 130 and soto had just beaten up bobby pac. everyone always thinks , "oh pacquiao should have fought soto/valero/guzman because they were top ranked fighters at 130." yeah they were the top ranked fighters at 130 , AFTER pacquiao , morales , barrera and marquez all left the division. you have to be following the division at the time to know this. yeah a few people would have wanted to see guzman/soto/valero fight pacquiao but at the time those were not the fights people wanted. pacquiao jumped to 130 in 2005. in 2005 the top 2 guys at 130 was barrera and morales. in 2006 it was still the same , with pac behind those 3. (pacquiao had just lost to morales and barrera got the #1 spot before that by beating morales) in 2007 , the top 2 guys were barrera and pacquiao. in 2008 , the top 2 guys were pacquiao and marquez (after marquez just beat barrera a few months before) soto , valero , guzman didn't become the top guys in the rankings until morales and barrera left and pacquiao and marquez moved up to 135.

Pacquiao had the options of fighting Valero, Barrera again, Guzman or Soto. Say what you want about Guzman's resume, but the Barrera rematch was pointless. He was coming off of a loss to Marquez. I could understand him not fighting Valero because as he said, his resume was full of tricycle drivers but there was no excuse for Soto and Guzman. If I remember correctly, that was right after Soto beat the crap out of Bobby. It should have been one of those two. gbp and top rank had just resolved their legal issues. that's why pacquiao was fighting gbp fighters for the 1st time in a couple of years. barrera wanted pacquiao fight (he had a 130 title) but gbp made him fight marquez first (they wanted jmm to get the belt , gbp sold barrera out) that's why barrera-pacquiao happened after barrera lost to jmm. valero , soto and guzman was still nothing but up and comers at the time. they weren't established names yet. in fact , they never became one. soto didn't win a belt at 130 'til 2008. guzman won his 130 belt barely a year before the pacquiao-barrera rematch. same for valero. they were young guys who had just recently won belts and the fight would have been interesting but no one was clamoring or begging for those fights. everyone was busy watching pacquiao-morales go at it and they were foaming at the mouth to see the pacquiao-marquez rematch.

I mean, who fights all the top fighters in every division anymore? That is an ideology of the past, it's all about making money now......very few fighters fight for pride once they make the bigscreen. Sure you could say Pac ducked this guy or that, but I can't think of many boxers who can't be accused of ducking someone....I see it all the time in here. So who really cares who he didn't fight? Look at Guzman's career....it's rubbish now. Look at Torrecampo's career.....is he fighting for multi-million dollar paydays? Nah, didn't think so...more like 2000 pesos and a bottle of potable water. Just a different opinion on it.

Those plans and the entire course of boxing was changed forever when Larry Merchant suggested Pac fights Oscar in the post-fight interview, so pac never looked back. Obviously, Guzman >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Diaz by far. But looking at their plan of moving up in weight and going after bigger names I certainly understand the logic. Now if Pac stayed at 130 pounds and kept fighting lesser opponents then I would clearly say it was a duck. The big part of the problem was Bob Arum is all about money. I don't think pac would give two sh!ts about fighting Guzman. But I'm sure in The Bob Father's eyes it's a difficult sell and a high risk/low reward type scenario. Guzman had like 90 fans me being one of them lol. Guzman also hurt himself then too because he would fight like once a year or so. Pac didn't have the speed advantage. That's why I consider him a probable pre-Douglas Mike Tyson= Short, short armed, power puncher= vulnerable vs faster taller guys. true say dude. would have been a great fight. if i am not mistaken joan guzman had been trying to get it on with pacqiaou from 02'-08', calling him out repeatedly , since they were in the same weight classes till pacqiaou moved further up in weight. would have been an excellent fight. i think it was very high risk for team pacqiauo at the time Pac didn't have the speed advantage. I was a HUGE Guzman fan and I wanted nothing more than a Pac vs Guzman fight. And while Guzman did beat Soto, Pacquiao fought Marquez next instead I believe. So I don't think that qualifies as ducking if you fight a guy who you got a draw with earlier, is a lot more money, more popular, higher rated and more respected. I was very disappointed at the time because they were planning on having Pac-Guzman in Vancouver, Canada, which isn't that far of a drive from Seattle, so I was pumped up only to have my heart torn from my chest lol. Guzman was a beast back then. He could have been something special but he ****ed his career up.
