both fighters made names on fights they lost (Kotelnik and Khan for Maidana, Alexander and Judah for Matthysse) both fighters didn't beat any of the top guys in the division except for Maidana beating a 21 year old Ortiz.
yet both guys are highly regarded in the division and keep getting shots at vacant titles while guys like Peterson and Garcia get over looked can some one explain why? who did they beat to be ranked top 5 in the division?
The fight with Khan no way could have gone either way. The only rounds I would have given MAidana were the last couple. Even in the 12 maidana looked to have punched himself out and khan maybe come back to win the round with some late flurrys of punches.
Also Maidana was gifted a win against a very very very old Morales who IMO will get beat down by Lucas when they fight in september.
For starters Maidana could have won rounds 3,6 and 7 against Khan round 4 was close as well but prob a Khan round. Morales didn't win against Maidana, Morales performed well but still lost 8-4 in rounds or at best 7-5 in rounds. Maidana was not gifted a decision against Morales its just not true.
What is true is that Maidana should have performed better against Morales, but i will give credit to Erik for a much better performance then a lot of people expected.
Maidana arguably beat Khan. The fight could have gone either way, and no one can dispute that, as the fight was that close. The same goes for the kotelnik fight, as many believed he was given the W over Maidana, as a result of him having a home advantage. Maidana is not overrated, as many of us know the tools he possesses. He's not the most skilled, but he is definitely competitive against the elite of 140, and one can make a case for him being undefeated. Not to mention he demolished the guy who is going to face who many regard as the best in the sport on Sep 16. So what is it? The guy is certainly world class.
Matthysse, however seemingly appears overrated, as his exposure came at the hands of Judah- who Amir destroyed- and a close fight with Alexander who technically was coming off two losses against Bradley and Kotelnik. Perhaps, his domination over Corley who Maidana had struggled with put him in the same perceptive level as Maidana. who da fukk knows up in hurrr?

Both are underrated if anything, why the f uck would anyone hate these two fighters?. They both are attacking fighters who put on exciting fights. Do people prefer to watch Bradley fight? or Alexander fight? than these two because i know who i would rather watch.
They are not overrated. Maidana made Ortiz quit and had a close fight with Khan and only Americans call Matthysse overrated, but they know he beat both Judah and Alexander.
^this.....
I think both fighters are being continually thrown in as opponents, and both have shown the ability to turn the tables. That is pretty impressive to me. Maidana's win over Ortiz and the beating he put on Khan towards the end of that fight do a lot to validate him as more than just a good opponent. Matthyse does seem a little bit overrated to me, although he is still good.
I feel both these guys had their chances in fights Maidana vs Khan was a really good fight the guy deserves a lot of credit for getting up from that shot from Khan in the first round. But their is no way Khan fights this guy again after what happened to Khan in the 10th round. But their was no for sure that he was going to get another crack at him no doubt Maidana is exciting fighter to watch and he ducks no one what's not to like about him. Matthysse is a good fighter that brings it all nite he reminds me of kosta tzu same body frame and punching power. I thought he did enough to win against Zab or a draw but Zab didn't beat this kid and I thought Matthysse beat Alexander .But Alexander fought pretty good and showed a lot of heart these guys are not overrated these guys like to fight and HBO love both these guys a lot as well as the hardcore boxing fans.
Maidana gave Khan the biggest run for his money in his entire career other than the Prescott fight. He only lost by 1 point according to one of the judges. And of course he busted up Ortiz. Hell, even the Kotelnik fight was very close, and Kotelnik is a stylistic nightmare for Maidana.
Matthysse is not great, but he's arguably undefeated right now. The Judah fight I persoanlly think he edged out, and he definitely beat Alexander. Those are two more-than-solid wins over some good contenders.
If there's anyone thats overrated at 140 it's Alexander, who has lost 3 straight fights.
I agree Maidana's overrated, and I actually rate him above Matthysse. If they fought, I'd bet on Maidana. He's viciousness with his power. He's also awkward, which is how, despite not being a very fast fighter, or very sharp puncher, he still manages to land on much more talented opponents. Matthysse is just a typical fighter, with power. But he doesn't fight like he has power. He's slow paced, and methodical... Maybe a trainer switch to either teach him how to box, or how to fight
Alexander got in his ass. Sure u could say he won, but that wasn't by any means a blowout. 1 or 2 points maybe
Maidana definitely is, Lucas I think is a solid fighter a lot better than Maidana I think. He won both fights he "lost" and I think he'll make Morales look his age, as he is a better technical fighter than Maidana is.

I think he's more questioning how you scored it a draw. Matthysse had a 10-8 round so if it was 5 rounds a piece he would of won by 1 point & if you gave Alexander 6 rounds he wins by 1 point. How did you end up scoring it a draw? Did you give Matthysse only 4 rounds but 2 of those 10-8 on your scorecard?
you are allowed to score a round 10-10 you know that right?
I get that people don't like Alexander on these forums but don't act like Matt was dominating that night it was a real close fight and not an Alexander vs Kotelnik type of a fight be real bro

maidana because of the ortiz fight. since then, hes really done nothing impressive...well he almost had khan for a second. anyways, we'll see what hes really about against guererro.
mathysse, its hard to say hes overrated. hes a good fighter, and i think ppl view him as such. nothing special tho.
And the simple fact that they make good fights and let their hands go makes them very easy to like.
I have Matthysse wining against Judah and Alexander, Maidana is a exiting fighter, I think he can win against any one in 140, he isn't good, but have a lot of power and intencity
and what exactly has lamont peterson done besides draw with ortiz and beat victor cayo? 2 guys that maidana KO'd in 6.
This. Maidana took his will away, and remember that was Maidana's 1st U.S. fight too. I think everyone knows what level Maidana operates on, a guy who can dish out plenty of punishment and can take plenty as well. He's a tough fight for anyone because of his pressure style and resiliency. Not a good boxer in the slightest, but he's very good at what he does. Nobody overrates him to my knowledge.

why is Maidana and Matthysse so overrated? | BoxingScene Community
