And hated Jermain Taylor? Sure, Taylor's run at middleweight left a little to be desired, but he did dethrone p4p number 1 Bernard Hopkins and beat him in a rematch. Call them draws if you want, but don't make me laugh by saying Hopkins won either fight. Then he gets another draw with Wright, the number 2 p4p guy in the world. Again, don't call it a Wright win. But yeah, then he wasted our time fighting Ouma and Spinks.
He signs to fight Pavlik, and I'm pretty sure it's going to be a Taylor victory. Pavlik was raw and badly lacked fundamentals. Sure enough, Taylor had him ready to go within minutes. But he failed to finish the deal and lost his title. It was a great fight for sure, but one Taylor gave away more than lost. Everyone on here was so excited about Pavlik and talked about how great of a champ he would be, a surefire improvement over Taylor.
Now here we are in 2011, and he's arguably the worst official middleweight champion of all time. The few times he actually did fight, his opponents were jokes (other than the ones who outclassed him). His win-loss record is downright atrocious, Taylor being the only great fighter he ever beat. And I thought Taylor earned at least a draw in the rematch.
I just like looking back and all that and laughing. Cheers, Kelly! You were a great champion in this sport.
I use to loveeeee me some Pavlik, but then he did the samething that I accuse Taylor of doing by fighting low mediocre opponents after winning the Middleweight title, But then they picked on the wrong oldie in Hopkins... I love it when young fighters try on an oldie with a name to enhance their resume and then it goes all wrong for them...Love it.
Hopkins/Pascal II
Watching history being made on live TV was the ultimate...
Sergio always lulls in the middle of fights, so I can't say the cuts are why Pavlik slowed down. Still, Pavlik did really well against a guy people are claiming is the best fighter in the world.
Stop acting like Pavlik ALMOST winning is impressive. He was WAYYYYY bigger than Sergio. I laugh when I see a guy that much bigger get outclassed by the little man. Sergio didn't just out box him, he TORE his face up. I was laughing for the entire last 9 minutes of that fight. I picked Sergio to win, but to see it happen is still pretty shocking.
Now I did pick Oscar to beat Pacquiao, but Oscar could at least use the excuse he was coming down to 147 and drained. What's Pavlik's, fighting as a super middleweight, excuse for losing to a 154 pounder?

Don't get me wrong, Im not blaming the cuts for the loss. A great fighter overcomes those types of obstacles and he instead lost focus. Jmo. Either way you look at it you're right though. Considering all his problems he did pretty well.

Yep, and there was quite an obvious difference between the guy who first fought Taylor to the guy that fought Martinez. Not that obvious, but enough. He was a good, fun, exciting champ for a short time in a sport that is currently filled with mediocre, self-obsessed hacks and boring so-called 'world champions'.
I thought he was going to come back and win after starting slow, but the cuts seem to distract him and took away from his momentum.

Pavlik at one point was probably better than Sergio Martinez now. A messed up Pavlik did do pretty well against Sergio.

People love to overrate people who just burst onto the scene excitingly. It happens.
I remember some posters saying that he would have beaten Barkley when I made a thread about it. lol.

public opinion is a *****, but in this case he only has himself to blame.
still,
imagine arums look on his face when he pulled out of the fight ... priceless.
