Can James Kirkland ever become a champ?

I've always been a fan of Kirkland since he got some exposure before his jail time. He looked a beast in beating Joel Julio and looked certain for a world title and boxing stardom. Obviously things panned out a little different with him being sent to jail and then getting KO'd in a round by a bum. Do you still think he has what it takes to win a title like everyone saud he could earlier in his career? I feel he really needs to spend more time getting technically better, he slugs against every opponent always going for the KO. Although he is great to watch I feel he needs to train on his jab and keeping his hands up to block punches when he comes forward.
