From the Daily Telegraph website....
DANNY Green was sensationally stopped after the ninth round by American Antonio Tarver last night.
Green's corner refused to send him out for the 10th after a barrage left him helpless at the end of the ninth round.
Tarver, a future Hall of Famer, pounded Green at the end of the ninth and left Green appearing on the edge of delirium as he headed back to his corner.
Trainer Angelo Hyder had to rescue him from going to the wrong corner and, as soon as he sat Green down, he waved the fight off. It was a stunning upset, with Green a heavy favourite.
"He hurt me twice but I couldn't let him know it," Tarver said.
The Sydney Entertainment Centre crowd stood in stunned silence.
The battle might have been won the night before the fight, when both parties met for the rules meeting and a blow-up occurred over the gloves.
The contracts called for Everlast or Winning brand gloves, but Green's camp arrived with Grants gloves, carefully screenprinted with the "Green" logo.
A proud Tarver refused to wear them, and armed with the wording of the contract he threatened to walk away from the fight unless they were changed.
But as this was going on Tarver's trainer Buddy McGirt, brought in a fortnight ago for just this reason, picked up a glove and walked away from the crowd.
He put the glove on and felt barely any padding over the knuckle. Beautiful, he thought.
He called Tarver over and told him to try the glove on, and Tarver also soon realised how little padding over the knuckle the glove carried.
"Shut the f ... up," McGirt said, and they walked back and, ahem, reluctantly accepted the glove. It had a devastating effect last night.
Green started strong for about, oh, a minute and a half.
He stalked the American, looking to go to the body to see exactly what he had.
Tarver was mildly troubled by the bumrushes but his southpaw stance and his experience was enough to keep him away from trouble.
But then Tarver landed his first straight left and, as early as that, the whole complexion of the fight changed.
The true story from this fight is that Buddy Mcgirt finally brought one of his fighters to a big win.
Exactly! People are overlooking this.
McGirt is a worldclass loser/failure and yesterday one of his fighters won a major bout.
Kudos!
I just love how it's assumed that Tarver is a Hall of Famer! Whether it's to make the loss look less laughable for Green fans or not, I don't know. It seems like every cunt and his dog is a HOFer these days. Hatton's a HOFer, Tarver's now a HOFer, Cotto's a HOFer, Margarito's a HOFer, Billy Dib's a HOFer, Glen Johnson supposedly a HOFer too! ****, people are already saying Froch, Ward, and Abraham are HOFers as well as Emmanuel Augustus and Micky Ward.
Please, HOfers are the very greatest, stand out fighters of each era/generation and in the history of the game, not pretty good champions and popular guys.
Yeah it seem easier to get in these days, Just been popular as a boxer seem to be enough to make you an HOF'er nowadays..
Mayweather wears Grants because they protect his hands with the "extra" padding.
Everlasts are the actual "puncher's" gloves...
This article makes no sense.
Same with Joe Calzaghe.
Also, is Tarver definitely a future HOFer?

never seen no wraps like dat...dem cask
So maybe what Roy Jones said about Green and the gloves in their fight has some truth to it?
If this is true then Green and his team are a bunch of low life cheating idiots.
If its true!
I think it wasn't a glove problem, Jones complained about the handwraps.

LOL for a pro boxer a pair of gloves is a pair of gloves because they get the gloves special made be it from reyes, grant, authentic, or everlast.... Green had 4 pairs of gloves made ..for this fight which where grants/ tarver saw that disagreed and mcgirt stepped in and showed him the advantage..
These weren't any pair of Grant Gloves, the article said they had the green logo on it or whatever. I'm assuming Green gets custom Grant's with less padding on the nuckles.
Mayweather wears Grants because they protect his hands with the "extra" padding.
Everlasts are the actual "puncher's" gloves...
This article makes no sense.
For any weight above 160, I don't think certain gloves matter at all. We see many of the punchers using Grants, and very rarely do we see fighters above 160 wearing gloves like Cleto Reyes. It's virtually only Everlast and Grants.
Don't understand, was someone trying to cheat? :wtf:
As I understand it, Green's camp tried to upset Tarver by making him wear a glove different to the gloves stipulated in the contract. Tarver refused, until his cornerman took the glove away and realised it had less padding in the knuckle than the contracted gloves. He showed this to Tarver who agreed to use it.
Dumb, really dumb psyche out job by Team Green.
For those claiming this proves Roy's protests right, Roy was talking about Green's handwraps, not gloves. He was trying to ride the meme of Margarito's handwrap scandal and hope people didn't notice he was really just a *****.
Edit: That's Pu$$sy. My GOD that is stupid.
They thought Tarver was going to be like Roy Jones and not be able to stand up to power, but Tarver has always been a tough ass dude, should have done their homework better~
Whatever the case, offering your opponent a glove with less padding in the knuckle than the ones in the contract is a dumb-ass move if ever I've heard one.
Doesn't make you a cheat at all. Makes you stupid.
Well that depends if you feel you are the bigger puncher and have the better chin then why not? Assuming both fighters are using gloves with less padding.
