The former world welterweight champion sustained the injury in a loss to Manny Pacquiao in November and will undergo an examination next week that could determine whether his career can resume.
Antonio Margarito, the former world welterweight boxing champion beaten by Manny Pacquiao in November, is struggling to recover from a right eye injury suffered in that bout and will undergo an extensive examination next week that probably will determine whether his career can resume.
Margarito (38-7, 27 knockouts) was struck in the eye by a left uppercut from Pacquiao in the fourth round of his unanimous-decision loss to the Filipino star Nov. 13 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Margarito's promoter, Bob Arum, earlier this year sought to schedule a summer date for Margarito to have a rematch against world super-welterweight champion Miguel Cotto, then pushed it back to September.
Word came Thursday that Margarito will now visit the University of Utah's prestigious John A. Moran Eye Center next week.
"The eye is still giving him trouble; it has not completely healed," Arum said.
Margarito's trainer, Robert Garcia, said he is "worried" about his fighter, who was ensnared in scandal in 2009 after plaster-coated inserts were pulled from inside his hand wraps before his loss to Shane Mosley at Staples Center. The California State Athletic Commission revoked Margarito's license.
"It's hard to think that he'll have to maybe quit like this when there's still million-dollar paydays out there for him," Garcia said. "I always tell these guys to invest their money when they get it, because that next big fight might never come. This is a big hit. He's a close friend."
I'm much more proud of a boxer who gives it his all than run like a ***** for over 7 rounds like Cotto did. Also, if it were just a journeyman Margarito is fighting, he would of more likely cleared by now. Given how it's a decent guy like Cotto, it's only smart to take more rest.
What's pride gonna do for you when push comes to shove, you gonna go live with Margarito and bathe him, feed him and wipe the drool off his chin??
I thought not.
Hopefully all the macho men around here will understand that now.
Well this is what a Mexican warrior means=career cut short, miss out on future paydays.
At least Antonio has that sexy wife to fall back on if he can't box anymore :wank:
That Mr. Ed mouth ***** is not hot.
This is why I dont fully agree with this "Im a warrior, I will fight to the end".....
At the end of the day, boxing is a sport, first and foremost....nonody gave Margarito extra credit anymore respect because he didnt throw in the towel...infact people are laughing at him because of how he tried to cheat.......
Sometime its better to fight another day and put your health before anything else....

Oh yea, since your own personal health is not important. Margarito trying to be a "warrior" just ruined his career, AGAIN. Nothing dumber than a Mexican brawler I say, just keep hitting me in the face, but I'm one tough SoB. Yep, your one tough SoB who is blind in one eye and instead of making millions is going to be living of disability and social security. Do they even have that in Mexico? I guess he'll be living off decapitating people or possibly become a coyote.
And BWAHAHAHA at you "journeyman" comment, please let me see your PhD and tell me how wrong the doctors are. You're just as stupid as Mendenhall, this ass says "I find it hard to believe a plane can bring down a building demolition style?" I thought this guy was a football player not some structural engineer.
Makes more sense for why Pac pulled his punches.
No telling how much more damage he could've caused.
Cole lived up to his role as being a shi.t ref that night.
I'm not usually the type that wishes bad upon people but I genuinely hate this scumbag and wish him the worst of luck...i'll forever be in debt with Pac for ridding us of that slimy inconsiderate bastard! Fuck Margacheater!
should have stopped it in the 11th.
i noticed duran was like :dunno: when pac was beating marg down like he's saying why the fukk are they letting this fight continue
i'll never get the image of tony being whipped down the stretch by robert garcia
ya tony!
pelear!
when the translator is saying : "lively, you bastard." and "We're with you." you know the fighter is getting a whipping
Anybody who saw that fight HAD to know Pacquiao was gonna hurt Margarito. :boxing:

That's quite an assumption there. Pretty ridiculous one at that.

why margarita need to ducked cotto now while cotto quit last time they fought :bottle::bottle::bottle:
Cause this time Margarito won't have rocks in his gloves.
