Just throwin this info in being that I am a World History major who has come to admire the Taino, and I'm half Mexican, I just felt compelled to respond to some of the fellows who bring up this idea that our natives were "better" than others', such as our PR cousins, the Tainos.
The reality is that the Taino and Carib had no time - Spaniards came before they had a chance to develop a more advanced society. Aztec and Mayan society is impressive yes, but remember, they were a more settled peoples. Natives had settled in the land for tens of thousands of years more than the inhabitants of the Carribean. It was discovered by natives as they traveled across the ice bridge into North America down to Central and South America. Columbus described Tainos as "the most beautiful peoples who speak the most beautiful tongue." Just thought this info might enlighten some and stop the bias in here against Tainos. And YES I am proud of my native Mexicans, they were awesome but I dont think they were better than other natives - remember, the Spaniards kicked all of our asses!
mexico has hundreds of tribes, not just aztecs,
how the fck you are going to create a civilization like the mayas, toltecs, aztecs if you dont hava the resorces to do it, in the small Island
plus ricas are not tainos mix, you guy are black mix with spanish, you dont look like american indians to me
Wtf are u talking about? You are talking without knowing dude, I study this. Before the arrival of CC, mainland natives had already begun trade with Tainos, providing them with more ofthe resources they lacked. While they did lack land and so could not achieve the same architectual feats as mainland natives, the sophistication of their culture and society would continue to grow. Read a book, not Wikipedia, and learn something: Tainos were discovered during a period of great growth.
As to your 2nd point, I have a feeling That A) You think Tainos and Mainland natives looked the same, which they didnt, and B) you dont even know any Puerto Ricans in person. My sisters fiance is Rican and he nor anyone in his family look Spanish - they have strong Taino native features (tall, dark-skinned w/ black straight hair. They do look to be mixed with African though. I also have more than a few Rican friends and can tell you - Ricans are NOT just white and black: the interbreeding of Taino with Africans and the rapes of Tainos by Spaniards started on day 1 and never stopped. Recently, a DNA test in PR showed that %60 of islanders have Taino DNA while %80 have African DNA.
Good **** Bro agree
Good **** bro, and I agree that u two are the ignorant, nationalistic pricks on this forum who think their better than everyone else - I see right thru your insecurity.
Good points. I'm going to try to learn more about the Tainos. There were alot more Natives(allied with Cortez) than Spaniards that defeated the Aztecs. But smallpox was the most instrumental in the Aztec defeat. And the Aztec tactic of trying to capture enemies for sacrifice rather than kill them didn't help vs ruthless Spanish tactics. Lastly, the Aztecs and Mayas weren't the only awesome Mexican natives. There were also the Olmecs and Toltecs. I've even read that the Apaches came from Mexico. I believe it was the Tarahumaras that said the Apaches were their war-like neighbors who moved away but still made a yearly pilgrimage. The author I was reading researched and discovered that the Apaches did indeed make a pilgrimage to Mexico at one time.
The Apaches used to hide out from the US Army in the Sierra Madre and in particular in Copper Canyon, which is the traditional homeland of the Tarahumaras.
Another group of badass Mexican natives would be the Yaqui Indians.
