He fought two elite class fighters and they both whipped his ass in embarrassing fashion, and his record is padded largely by fighting bums in the UK.
Can someone please explain the appeal to me?
Also: Before anyone comes in here criticizing the first part of my statement, I don't punish anyone too much for losing to Floyd or Pac, but I will punish you for how you lose. Hatton was completely and utterly out-classed in both fights on a level that makes you wonder why the matches were made in the first place.
A larger question. I have never understood why people seem to like Ricky Hatton so much. In the interviews I’ve seen, he never seems personable, pleasant, or humble. Yet working class British fans adored him as if he were some sort of working class Messiah. I don’t see the appeal.
Maybe there is some part of him that I haven’t seen, having only watched him during fight build ups?
I love the classic trolling pattern here. It starts with
"I don't know why so many people rated him so highly - the two times he genuinely stepped up in class he was outclassed in every way, so what's the appeal and why was he rated so highly?"
and ends up
"He's a bum and a homosexual who rapes kittens and plays the accordion. His favourite book is Mein Kampf and his favourite film is just a home video of an innocent puppy being beaten to death. What an inhuman MONSTER! Unlike Floyd whose cock tastes OSSUM!"
Ricky Hatton had a good career. He is a true Englishman, and had a great sense of humour, and in general is a nice guy. He may have been outclassed and knocked-out in spectacular fashion, but he still got in there with 2 ATG's, along with beating some good fighters. Ricky is more of an overachiever, but did have his moments in there, let's not discredit him.
Seriously though, English or non - English, How can you not this man? He is an all round top bloke, Ricky is the type who'd sit down and have a pint with you. Ricky will always be remembered as the biggest character in British Boxing who had a successful career.
Long live Ricky, he is a top bloke.
Couldn't agree more. Ricky is a top bloke and is always up for a laugh. Unless your English, I doubt many will ever understand why Ricky was so popular..
People need to stop comparing every single fighter to the likes to Mayweather and Pacquiao, we wont have fighters of their standard for a long time. Dont knock Hattons resume, did it ever occur to you that maybe some fighters need to fight limited level fighters in order to gain ring experience/keep them in fighting shape rather than for padding out a resume?
I'll always knock him for his being unprofessional. I've heard he drank six pints of beer a day DURING training camp.
You didn't hear that, you just made it up.
TS, u are a moron! FMJ and Pac are the only elite fighters he's faced?!? Ever heard of KOSTYA TSZYU, LUIS COLLAZO or JOSE LUIS CASTILLO?? Lazcano and Malignaggi are also elite, tho some say Lazcano was already past prime when Ricky kicked his butt. And no matter what one might say about his fight with Collazo, it WAS very close BUT Ricky still won. I had him winning by 2 points personally. Its because he got wobbled in the last 2 rounds that people think he LOST, but thats bs. Tyson got shaken by Bonecrusher in the last round, does that mean he deserved to lose that fight??

Hatton did beat Jose Luis Castillo in 4. Who went life and death with Mayweather (in their first fight anyway) that kind of added to his rating to be a worthy opponent for Mayweather.
I don't think Hatton was all that physically limited. Dimensions are not on his size with him being on the short side in height and reach, but he had good speed. His foot speed was very good, and his hand speed was above average too. He wasn't a guy who was known to take the best care of himself also outside the ring, but still got some good results.
He was reasonably fluid in his movements, for instance, the way he'd move his body to get the right angles on his body shots. He didn't look clumsy, awkward, or slow when he did this. He had a decent chin for most of his career.
One thing he definitely should have worked on was his right hand. It was an ugly, slapping or pushing shot. He didn't turn it over with leverage and technique.
very good post, i always noticed that right hand punch too, i thought i was the only one
LOL. Kirkland was already being touted for a shot at Martinez. Jacobs was going to be the next middleweight star of US boxing. Williams was supposedly capable of dominating from welterweight to light heavy. Margarito was some unstoppable force who could walk through any welterweight. Michael Grant was... well, you get the picture. Being over-hyped as a fighter is hardly something limited to Ricky Hatton, and trust me, he's far from being the worst example of it.
Am Not claiming he was the worse, quite the opposite really, again good fighter but not special, vastly overrated after the Tsyzu win.
I've always felt Hatton was overrated after he went life and death with Luis Collazo. I'll always knock him for his being unprofessional. I've heard he drank six pints of beer a day DURING training camp. And I've seen pictures of him smoking cigarettes. Not to mention the infamous cocaine snorting incident.
I have no qualms about partying, but not DURING training camp. Not to mention the way he blew up in between fights.
It just always seemed like he could have been a lot better if he had more self-control.
Fighters like Floyd and Manny are elite, because they are in-shape ALL year round. They don't take days off. And that's what separates the rest from the best.
Thats complete nonsense. He didnt drink during camp, in fact he was very dedicated and intense during training camp. Theres no way he'd be able to lose all the weight he put on outside of camp if he was drinking 6 pints a day. Ive not seen any pics of him smoking and the coke thing was when he retired.
I agree, he shouldve took more care with his lifestyle outside camp, its amazing he got as far as he did living like that as an athlete
I liked Ricky because he TRIED to be the best.
Not everyone is given the chance to become the best.
Not everyone desires to be the best. Some are happy making money and staying stagnant.
He was given two chances and didn't come in just for the paycheck or slack off either time.
He knew his boxing was limited and that's probably what made him so entertaining for a lot of people. Instead of a guy who had all the tools, He was a boxer who would grind you down and impose his will on you.
And most times boxers like him are more fan pleasing due to his heart, than boxers who have all the skills, but don't know what to do with it.

Kostya Tszyu was an elite class fighter if i ever saw one.
Is any fighter that can't "step up" and beat Floyd and Pac rubbish ?
I don't consider throwing your body into a guy continuously and rabbit punching him half to death to be "in the fight". Floyd clowned Hatton's dirty, borderline homosexual ass and finished him off with one of the funniest KO's you'll ever see.Incidentally, if you genuinely believe Hatton "rabbit punched Floyd half to death" in that fight, you either stepped out for a coffee for the entire 10 rounds, or suffer from some manner of severe retardation.
Hatton was outclassed by Mayweather in the same way that all of Floyd's recent opponents have been outclassed. What you can say for Hatton though is that he managed to bring the best out of Mayweather, which you can't necessarily say for many of his other post-Castillo opponents. At any rate, this is a fairly pointless thread, as like I said, nobody around here is claiming that Hatton is some sort of a world beater. He's a solid, entertaining fighter who had a good run at 140 lbs for a few years.
Hatton wasn't in the fight, he was hugging and rabbit punching, while Floyd consistently landed cleaner and better shots throughout the entire fight.
Hatton never rabbit-punched in the entire fight, his worst crime was punching a rope. Mayweather on the other hand was throwing elbows, turning his back, holding on, ducking down constantly to the point where Lennox Lewis questioned whether Mayweather was doing some kind of martial art. Yet all the while the (now known to be) corrupt ref was warning Ricky.
Look man, you're a flomo spazball with red bars and a belly full of hate, you can see it a mile off and I don't have time for this. Do 1.
yes, you (a random fucc-knuckle hater off the internet) knows more than the most celebrated boxing coach in the world, Freddie Roach. Enjoy your red.
Lmfao @ This idiot not understanding that everyone, even your boy toy Freddie Roach will say anything if it furthers their own agenda.
He said what he did to pimp Pacquiao's win as being more significant and to assert him as the better fighter based on their performances against common opponents. I remember the comments you're referring to and the context they were said in, and that was a prime example of him pushing an agenda.
Also, Teddy Atlas also knows a thing or two about the sport of boxing and more or less agrees with my assessment. Hatton wasn't in the fight, he was hugging and rabbit punching, while Floyd consistently landed cleaner and better shots throughout the entire fight.
But hey, I'm talking to some clown with a Ricky Hatton avatar, who's probably from Britain (I didn't check when I wrote this), so I wouldn't expect anything but blind support.
