Roach has no concerns about Pacquiao's preparation this time
by Michael Rosenthal Apr 6th, 2011|
Freddie Roach returned from the Philippines before Manny Pacquiao’s fight against Antonio Margarito last year with a degree of concern.
Pacquiao had worked hard but, because of myriad distractions related mostly to his second career as a congressman, he fell behind in his training. He had to play catch up in Los Angeles in the final weeks before the fight.
RingTV.com sat down with Roach on Wednesday at Staples Center, the site of a news conference to promote the Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.-Sebastian Zbik fight on June 4.
What was Roach's state of mind a month before Pacquiao fights Shane Mosley on May 7? Couldn’t have been more relaxed. He has the quiet confidence of a trainer absolutely certain that his fighter will be at his best come fight time.
“We had a very good start in the Philippines,” Roach said. “Congress didn’t really get in the way this time. His mind was on training. I think the first time we were there he had just become a congressman. It was exciting and new. I think he realized that congress is pretty boring. They don’t do a lot.
“Congress never came up. He never said he misses his job (as a congressman, as he did last camp).”
Roach is giving Mosley the requisite respect all world-class opponents deserve – but only to a point.
A Pacquiao who is 100 percent focused and prepared against a 39-year-old who has seen better days, Roach implied, might not turn out to be a competitive fight. He is making a bold prediction.
“We’re not taking this guy lightly,” he said. “We’re taking him seriously. We’re back here in L.A. He sparred yesterday, six rounds with Karim Mayfield and Shawn Porter, two good sparring partners. And Manny looked very good.
“I don’t see Shane having a chance.”
And what about Mosley’s power?
“He has a big punch … relatively,” Roach said. “Who has he knocked out? (Ricardo) Mayorga? Big deal. That guy can’t fight a little bit. I’m not going to say this will be a good fight to try and sell the fight.
“We’re going to knock him out.”
When?
“I doubt early,” he said. “He has experience. He knows how to survive. We’ll make the fight at a fast pace, our pace. I’d say he’ll stop him in six, seven rounds. … That’s the prize, to be the first to stop him, to show the world how much better we are than anyone else. That’s our goal.”
One thing that could stand in the way of a knockout is Pacquiao’s compassion.
He had a badly beaten Margarito in enormous trouble late in the fight but couldn’t bring himself to inflict unnecessary punishment to finish the job. Roach respects that sentiment but added that it could lead to trouble.
“He’s a compassionate person,” he said. “He ends up liking his opponents as time goes on. He feels sorry for them. I urged him not to do that. He said it’s a sport, that he should try not to kill anyone. I agree with that.
“He was asking (Margarito) if he was OK in the 11th and 12th rounds; they were nodding to each other. One punch can change a fight if a guy gets lucky, though. You shouldn’t let those things happen.”
Will he do it again?
“Yes, he’ll probably do it again,” Roach said.
Even so, if Pacquiao is as sharp as Roach says he is, an aging Mosley might not last long.

(first vid)He also said Shane didnt look good in his last fight which I assume was his fight against Margarito. He knocked Margs out? Cant buy a fight with Pacquiao but Pacquiao is fighting the guy he beat. (second vid) They've accepted a fight with Mosley coming off an ass whoopin by Floyd and a bad fight with Mora. Is that not obvious? Is that not what happened? Stop nit pickin and just be honest. The only shame is in arguing against the very thing Roach is telling you. Its not my opinion.
1. you are making a conclusion based on an assumption.
2. roach said nothing of the sort in the first vid. it was on the second vid and we are not even sure what fight he was referring to, since it was a short part of an interview.
3. let me put it to you this way. other than Martinez and Floyd, who among the other possible opponents of Pac can beat Mosley?
You're all like that psycho ex-girlfriend... all this denial and ALWAYS mentioning how nobody is bringing him up... yet... YOU are bringing him up. Funny how this only proves how much people actually RESPECT Floyd.. You HAVE to bring him up.... LOL...
Peace
LOL you Mr. Vacation fans are funny. I was responding to someone who brought him up. You're reading comprehension skills must be at an all time low. SMH
Do you come in these threads much? I've seen countless Pac fans hyping this fight. Don't get mad dude, just calling it like I see it.
I don't like the fight either, i would rather see Berto in the ring with Pacquiao, for the simple facts that Berto is younger, undefeated and has the belts, but you have to admit Manny will KO Berto even earlier than 6 rounds. Even Mosley will easily beat Berto, atleast Mosley has a punchers chance against Manny, and Manny's motivation is to become the first person to KO iron chin Mosley. Let's just enjoy this fight first and maybe afterwards we will see the superfight with Floyd happening finally...
Nobody even brought up Mr. Vacation. He's not even a part of this topic. Dude is a clown.

Pac fans I wanna hear you defend this one.
you want Pac fans to defend that pacquiao will go for stopping shane because shane hasnt been stopped? whats there to defend there? that pacquiao will not knock shane out?
Roach is a good trainer but when it comes to hyping the fight he is stupid. He does this all the time to all Pac's opponents. Discrediting Pac wins and his opponents even before Pac destroys them. I don't know if he tries to fvck Pac's opponents mind to make them think what their current state right now but I tell you it is a stupid idea. Every time he did that, it takes the shine every Pac wins.
Hey, at least he is being honest. But did you notice how different he sounds now than he did after Shane was trying to get a fight with them after he knocked out Tony??

Trouble is they dont think with logic and an accurate timeline , Pactards think in fanworld , that means the real timing of events means nothing if it debunks their idol .
I understand the obvious but the reality is that Roach goes back and forth on what type of challenge and draw that Mosley is. One day he's tough. One day he's easy pickins. Try consistency.
I can see where your coming from, but Freddy does the same thing with Floyd. I mean I can post several contradictory comments but I'm sure your aware of them already.
Boxing is mostly mental, and since Manny doesn't talk trash, Freddy often says things to get in the heads of opponents. Ali did it, Floyd does it, as well as countless other legends in boxing. I just don't get why people take this for more than what's its worth when it's obvious it's done just to get into an opponents head.
Check the poster behind him. Didnt Mosley KO that dude. Irony in action.
Same statement "He didnt look good in his last fight" but now it makes sense which is contrary to the previous right.
in the first vid, roach belittled mosley's SELLING POWER. not FIGHTING POWER.
did you actually watch that vid?
on the second vid, roach was mostly incomprehensible. yeah, we could clearly hear him say that mosley didn't look good in his last fight.
but what of it? he DIDN'T look good in his last fight (i'm assuming that was against mora) that's because of the style of his opponent. mosley NEVER looks good against defensive type fighters. it doesn't take a genius to figure that out.
that second vid practically the only phrase you could comprehend from roach is that single statement. its pretty easy to spin it whatever way you want since you could always put it in any context.
AGAIN. roach never belittled mosley's skills as a fighter. he considered mosley dangerous before and he STILL considers mosley dangerous now, which is why they are taking Pac's training quite seriously.
and AGAIN, the only difference now is that Roach is very, very confident in their preparation for the mosley fight.

This would only make sense if Freddy chose Manny's opponents. He doesn't so who cares what he thinks.
Manny has the "Tyson effect" going for him right now. Due to his style, people are tuning in to watch a solid opponent get crushed in brutal fashion.
An action packed fight is really all the casual fan cares about, which is what they will get when Manny and Shane fight. I see 2-3 rounds of back n forth action, then Manny taking over and beating the sh1t out of Shane.
Tyson use to do this all the time, which is why he was the most watched fighter of all-time. No one gave a sh1t if it was a 12 round competive fight as long as the got there money's worth. With Manny.....your damn well gonna get your moneys worth.
Pac fans I wanna hear you defend this one.
Defend what?
We, along with everyone else, know that no one is even touching him at 147 and 140. Mosley has no chance because Manny is on another level right now and after watching him crush Cotto, Hatton and Margarito, it's obvious that Shane is in for an @sswhooping. FWIW he has a better chance than Berto, Bradley or Marquez, simply due to his chin and punching power. Shane atleast makes it to the championship rounds, whereas those other guys get KO'd in under 7 rounds (something I've been saying for months).
Don't agree, please name me one person, outside Floyd or Martinez that you would favor to knock off Manny right now?
Everyone knows the only real challenges for Manny are Floyd and Sergio. Floyd has legal issues, and a long lay off, so I'm 100% sure he won't be ready anytime this year for a fight. Martinez on the other hand.....isn't going to get Manny until after Manny vs Floyd happens. This should be common sense for obvious reasons, unless you are a person who likes to flame. Also Manny has stated on numerous occasions that he intended to go back to 147 after the Tony fight, and Shane was the best option at 147. Shane beats Berto even at this stage of hue career, and Marquez has to atleast win at or above 140, to stop any excuse from posters like you once Manny knocks him the fvkk out.
To sum it all up.....everyone is gonna be an easy fight for Manny until he faces Floyd or decides to hop to 154 again. Why would anyone argue anything different?
unfortunately the only true leverage comes from those PPV numbers. If this one doesn't do over a million it's not going to help their leverage.
They may also have another advantage point in mind. If Mayweather is even remotely worried about fighting Pac (I'm sure he is worried a great deal about fighting him actually), then a demolition of Mosley unlike what anyone else has ever been able to do thus far would send Mayweather reeling in self doubt.
I see it as either they fight or they don't but if Mayweather is gonna be really hesitant about it, then team Pacquiao is going to put everything out there that they can to put more pressure on his shoulders. If they can push him away from the fight, then they are gonna push him hard and make him look really bad to the press and public. It's gonna be: "We have completely demolished everyone of Floyd's most recent opponents in much clearer and dominant fashion than Floyd did, that's why he is so scared." The media is gonna eat it up too....
It aint sh*t to spin because he said it. He said it before and Pac fans turned a deaf ear. They come back and say well Shane is fast and powerful. Now we're back to he aint sh*t. The point is they dont consider him a challenge and didnt from the beginning. But I have to be consistent and if the road ends at Pacquiao/Mayweather then all is forgiven.
roach has always been consistent in his respect for Mosley's abilities as a fighter. where did you see roach ever saying mosley is shot/washed up?
the only difference now is that roach is more confident in Pac's preparedness this time around.
Hey, at least he is being honest. But did you notice how different he sounds now than he did after Shane was trying to get a fight with them after he knocked out Tony??
Exactly , since Pac really made it moving up , he has cherry picked blatantly , this is another , it sounds like chickensh!t to me when Freddie says we will knock him out and show what nobody else could do ,,, WTF you know how shallow that is when Team Pac ducked a begging Mosley , and Freddie gave the reason by saying you to good of a fighter Shane , and now after Floyd owned Mosley and Mora showed how far he has slipped he comes out with this ,, get the fuk outa here Freddie . this bullsh!t in Pac fights is never ending and all to avoid a random no cut of test , its pathetic .
It's just like I called it from the git-go. The entire premise of the fight was to have Pac look better than Mayweather did against Mosley so they would have some sort of leverage against him in future negotiations. May got rocked once or twice and went on to dominate tactically.
Pac may get hit here and there but his speed and pressure attack are going to burn Mosley out in a matter of rds and then, it's punching bag time. Mosley is to strong to get KO'd by a single punch but I feel his face will be so swollen, that Nazim will toss in the towel or it will be a TKO against the ropes around the 6-9th rd. Roach even stated such..."We want to look better against him than anyone else ever has" In other words...better than Floyd did
