It is seems to me that Berto is subject to a lot of unjust hate of this forum based on the opinion that he hasn't fought enough top fighters and gets paid millions by HBO to fight soft touches.
I think this is an unfair assessment of Berto's career thus far. While he hasn't faced the quality of opposition that one would expect of a 27-0 boxer, it's not as if his record is devoid of top names. In his last 5 fights, Berto has fought and beaten Quintana, Urango, and Collazo, all of which are strong competitors at world level. Yes, his victory over Collazo is widely disputed, but we have to remember that Collazo isn't no joke. He has never lost a fight decisively except from Mosely, and a lone KO loss earlier in his career. Simply put, he is a tough fight for anyone at welterweight. Berto held his own, did what he had to do, and came away with the victory. Yes, be shouldn't be paid the millions he makes for fighting the likes of Hernandez, but that's HBO's fault and not his. I'm not going to hate on a guy for making money, and neither should you.
I like Berto because he is a fast, skilled, powerful and sometimes entertaining fighter. I think we're going to see a lot from him in the next few years and he may surprise even the most hardened haters. Ortiz is going to be a difficult fight for Berto, a very difficult fight. Many people wrote Ortiz off after he quit against Maidana and limped to a draw against Peterson, but he still has the skills and power to beat anyone around his weight at world level. It's not going to be an easy fight for Berto by any stretch of the imagination. However, if he can get past Ortiz, huge fights against the likes of Khan, Bradley, Mayweather, and Pacquiao wait in the wings, and it's there where I feel we will see his best.
Do you know how many ranked welterweight contenders Andre Berto has actually fought since he first won his world title almost three years ago? In total,he has fought just once - and that was over two years ago.I would claim what a joke that actually is,but,in truth, there is nothing funny about it.It's a completely disgrace and a complete and utter embarrassment that a world champion in his own weight class can hold a title for so long and not even have the balls to defend it against credible contenders within that division - especially with the amount of money that he is making for each fight.
Carlos Quintana was no longer relevant at the point he was selected as the next victim of the Berto Cherry Pickin' wagon. He has fought just three rounds in eighteen months and was no longer comfortable even making the welterweight weight limit anymore. Not the worst opponent in the world, but this was clearly a much faded version of the fighter that had spanked Joel Julio and Paul Williams. And the fact that a faded Carlos Quintana is looked upon as one of Berto's greatest victories speaks volumes of how much of a farce Berto's overhyped career has been.
And contrary to what some of these Berto fans(granted, there is very few of them,I know) would have you believe, this isn't some young,up-and-coming prospect that is looking to establish himself in the sport;this is a world title holder that is in his late 20's and has been a professional boxer for over six years at this point. The very least that can be expected is that this cretin actually have the balls to defend his title against fighters that are actually ranked within his own weight class.
Truth is,this joker won't last long if he actually grows a pair and steps up in competition. He's not even completely proven at even a world class level yet.And it doesn't how much they try to force this piece of sh^t down our throats and try to convince us that fighting overmatched opposition in front of twenty people makes him a star, the true fans of the sport of boxing will always know better.
Great post. Agreed word for word. Green K

at the same time...a lot of the hate for Berto would have went away if he would have fought Collazo again and DESTROYED HIM! but he gave his "HATERS" ammunition buy not fighting Collazo again, also allowing Cintron to talk trash about him
I actually like Berto a lot, he has a TON OF TALENT but he just takes fight that HBO will accept and to me that is HURTING HIM...maybe not financial but with the fans I think it generates a lot of HATE toward him
sometimes you have to say "Forget About HBO, Forget About The Money" this fight is for PRIDE & RESPECT and I think that is what fights with Collazo and Cintron would do for him and he would still get paid in the process
I thought Berto vs Collazo was a VERY GOOD FIGHT! Not sure why HBO "WOULDN'T WANT THAT FIGHT" I would love to see them battle again!
andre berto is a beast he needs work all the hate is just crazy he has 27 fights after this fight he should fight a bigger name but then again whos there to fight besides clottey cotto mosley floyd or pac? which of those fighters he will get talked about for fighting leftovers? paul williams said he is not coming back down to 147.... how about zab judah?
Zab khtfo
how bout mike jones or cintron?

If i was Berto
i would keep fighting bums for millions..............
BUT i'm a boxing fan and he aint fought nobody, and his biggest win vs Collazo was a gift vicotry. Until he steps his game up and fights bigger names with better comp, he's gonna be ****ted on no matter what
A lot of boxing fans are....... stupid. Has Berto had softer touches from time to time? Yes. Could he face better opposition? Yes. Is any of this really his fault? Doubtful.
HBO and his promoter Lou DiBella want to make him a star. They don't want to risk anything just yet. So they are building him up and are waiting for the perfect time to get him in there with the biggest threats.
The fact of the matter is that fans assume he makes him own match ups. Berto wanted Mosley, until Mosley wanted Mayweather and the Haiti situation happened. Berto wanted Manny after his last fight. Berto has called out a few other names in the past. However, this is a business.
If you want to blame anyone, blame his handlers and/or HBO. Has nothing to do with him. He has heart and skill and he wants to win. You can't ask for much more from the FIGHTER himself.
I think the criticism he gets is totally warranted. Don't get me wrong I like Berto but from the interviews i've read it seems like this dude's head is so far up his behind that he can't see straight. Somebody said "Name me someone Berto could fight", how about the dude that was clowning him on any boxing website you could find, Kermit Cintron. In an interview on another website Berto said "If I beat Cintron it does nothing for my career", so beating Ortiz does? For crying out loud the dude was gonna fight Randall Bailey before the Ortiz fight came up! His resume as a Welterweight Champ is virtually non existent. I'm not big on Cintron much like a lot of people on this site but he would of by far been the best name on Berto's resume. Berto wouldn't even think about stepping in the ring with dudes on Cintron's resume. The thing that I don't like about it as well is that Berto is incredibly talented man, but he hasn't fought a threat since Collazo. Matter fact that's pretty much the only threat dude has fought. Like I said, I like the kid. He just needs to step it up. Heck dude could of even fought Clottey or something. Just fight an actual welterweight again and i'll be happy. SMH
Yup,Berto is the livest opponent for them 2 primadonas. But they're not fighting each other & they ain't fighting him,but the only 1 criticized is him. They're all doing the same thing.I never thought I'd see the day when a fighter can have a claim to be the best fighter int the world, while feeding on a steady diet of old men & face 1st brawlers & have his fans acknowledge he's been putting on farces & are still willing to like his a$$ clean after he takes a dump on their pocketbooks.
calm ur hard-on for Pacquiao down buddy, this is not a Pacquiao thread. Your complaint is with Pac fighting Marg? Cry about it, and go talk to all the fighters that r still scared of Marg. “If you don’t like Manny Pacquiao, then he must have done something to you personally, like steal your girlfriend or something!” Naz Richardson... I would like to see Pac fight the eventual best of the 140s or Berto but other than that who is there? Marquez above 140? Pshh.. Middleweight Sergio Martinez? Pac fights 2-3 times per year, if every fight isn't the BEST possible option then u dont need to cry about it cuz he will be fighting again shortly. When Floyd doesnt fight for 2 years and then fights a lame fight its a big deal cuz he wont fight for another 2 years. With Pac it's not necessary to be as picky cuz he anounces his next opponent literally within a month of each win. Bottom line, Pacquiao has been the easiest P4P king to fall in love with since Tyson, if u dont like him then something is wrong with u.
The breaking point regarding Berto, for me, was the mention of him facing (after Ortiz) Matt Hatton next. I like Berto, I think he's an exciting fighter and up to this point his career has been managed extraordinarily well.
He's gradually stepped up the level of competition to where he's fighting guys he can beat, and look good doing so. His team has also mitigated "risk" so that he can make the most $$$ fighting the least risky opponents.
However, there comes a point where, if you claim to be the best in your division, you have to fight the best opponnents out there. OK, I'll give a pass for Oritz (he's no push over) but Matt fvcking Hatton? NO, that's just unaceptable, as a fan, to face a guy whose coming off a one sided beatdown where he fought 12 rounds to survive, not to win.
how is he deserving of his belt? who has he beat?
who has he not beat other than Mayweather and Pacquiao? If he UDed Mike Jones is that somehow going to completely change your opinion of him? How is he deserving of his belt? Because he was ranked #1 contender by the WBC when Floyd vacated to fight Oscar so he was given the opportunity. In short, he is deseving of his belt bc he fought for it and won.
excuse me title fight...not unification.
Actually May/Mosley could have been a title fight regardless but Floyd didn't care about the title so he didnt pay the comission's fee to fight for it.
Also, Berto would have beat the Mosley that showed up against Floyd. Mosley was completely gased after the 3rd round. Shane is not beating any top welterweight anymore with that kind of stamina. Berto has brutal conditioning, is faster, just as strong, and more determined at this stage of his career. Mosley is sort of gun shy now and does not throw the head-body combinations that made him succesful years ago.
The whole boxing scene is pretty pathetic right now in terms of promoters protecting their fighters. Theres plenty of good fights out there at WW. Berto just hasnt fought any of them. It's time for him to get in with someone capable.
Ortiz is a good fight to prove himself. I respect Ortiz for climbing back from that KO and hope he dishes one out to Berto.
Thats what I love about Cotto.... He's gone into the fire many times....

I agree with you. I don't understand all the hate Berto gets. It's not his fault the ww division is in a cold war between Floyd and Pac. He could fight Mike Jones or Cintron but there honestly isnt really anyone else for him to fight. I like Berto. It is a shame that he didnt fight Mosley because i believe he would have beat him and then Floyd and Pac prob would not have wasted fights on him (I love Mosley but his wind is completely gone in his old age). Also, I like the Ortiz fight. People don't realize Ortiz will actually be the bigger man - he has been struggling to make 140 and he's taller than Berto. Ortiz is another guy that gets a lot of grief from ppl. I think Ortiz has some of the most beautiful fundamental punches - the hooks he dropped Maidana with were SICK.
PS Ortiz did not limp to a D against Peterson. He won that fight pretty clearly IMO. He dropped him twice and he won probably 8 rounds.
