Stoic Puerto Rican warrior Miguel Cotto is a man of few words, usually short with answers and leaving his future to promotional firm Top Rank.
This weekend during a visit to ESPN Deportes' Golpe a Golpe, Cotto was more than happy to share thoughts on a November 2009 loss to Manny Pacquiao.
According to Cotto, a lapse in strategic fighting was his ultimate downfall against the dangerous Filipino.
"I was doing well the first few rounds by boxing," said Cotto. "But when he knocked me down in the third, I stopped doing what was working and went blow for blow with him."
In in that choice, he handed the fight to Pacquiao.
"I gave him the key to victory by exchanging blows," said Cotto.
Cotto eventually lost via a 12th round technical knock-out after being downed in the third, fourth, and and taking a beating through out the evening.
Maybe Cotto's uncharacteristic dialouge were the beginnings of a campaign to rematch with Pacquiao in late 2011, or 2012 - one that few believe the Puerto Rican could win.
Next for Miguel Cotto is a likely Summer rematch against Antonio Margarito at New Jersey's New Meadowlands Stadium.
Cotto is right he was doing very well until he got wild and seriously hurt. He never recovered from that second knockdown and was out of the fight after that.
If he sticks to boxing, doesn't get into wild exchange and doesn't try to go punch for punch with Pac he might do much better.
The only way Cotto win this fight would be if he just counter Pacquiao but blow for blow he is not going to win. Pacquiao will land 3 to 1 on Cotto. I thought that Cotto was going to box in the fight and let Pacquiao come to him and counter with the left because Pacquiao is usually jumping in to attack. Also Pacquiao timed the jab, everytimes Cotto would throw the jab Pacquaio was looking to land his right hook.
Pac is always feeling his opponents in the first and second rounds. That has always been the case with the exception of Hatton who came out smoking in the very first round forcing Pac to throw bunches of combos.
Cotto tried to box in the early rounds but was being caught with flurries of punches. He was actually KD'ed by a right hook doing the box style. He changed style and tried to exchange with Pac and that didn't work either.
The key to his defeat is not about lack of boxing skills nor the change of style... It isn't about his decision to exchange punches with Pac either.
It is Pac's speed and awkward style that spelled his defeat. Pac was throwing blazing punches at angles he can't anticipate.
The key to neutralizing somebody like Pac is speed counter punching plus anticipating those awkward punches... easier said than done.
The only boxer I think that might have a chance in doing this is floyd... My honest opinion.
First, he boxed but he got caught frequently with combos to the head.
Second, he exchanged with pac and got mauled in the process.
Third, he run but was chased by pac all over the ring. Though at some point Pac was becoming frustrated with Cotto's runnning away.
I just don't know if speed counter punching will do the work... How can one counter those punches he can't see coming... just thinking....
I want to see Pac/JMM 3 and pac/floyd... I want to see if our theories here are true.
:boxing:
Pac timed Cotto's jab too though. if you are a left hand heavy fighter you are going to have trouble against Pac already. You have to be able to land the right hand and keep him at a good distance. only Morales and JMM have been able to do this really. Mosley is too old, and less of a boxer than those two.
Cotto is a guy who has to lead and finish with his left hand most of the time. I do think Manny would force him to throw a lot more right hands, but will it make that much of a difference? Cotto is better served moving down to 147 and fighting these other guys like Berto or Bradley.
Its either Cotto forgot how to keep doin it or mustve been something that pac did to make cotto stop throwin jabs. This is kindof a fanboy to say but pac is an offensive tactician, he will adjusts his ammuniton mid-game. :chomp:
It's not being a fanboy. It's completely discrediting Pacquiao to say Cotto just stopped jabbing. Pacquiao is an extremely hard fighter to neutralize, even the fighter everyone says did the best job, Marquez, got the sh** kicked out of him in two fights. Pacquiao did an obviously underrated job of making Cotto pay every time he jabbed, that's why Cotto stopped jabbing.
I kinda agree with him. He was doing ok when he boxed Pac behind the jab. He got caught with that uppercut when he was swinging for the fences, trading with Pac which was stupid. And he never recovered.
Honestly though, he doesnt beat Pac in a rematch, not a fukin chance.

Your point?
Maybe Duran should've never fought Hearns...
And Hearns should've never fought Hagler...
Seeing as neither had much chance to beat their foe that night...
This is boxing, fights happen, just enjoy them and don't be so damn critical. Armchair tough guys...
you are asking me, what my point is, and you yourself come up with such a post..
cotto states : "i fought a dumb fight" and my reply and point is, he cant fight whichever way he wants too, pac and a prime margarito has his number. my post was actually adressing the topic, where as yours, just resembles that of someone having a panic attack.
i dont know why, but cotto gets too many excuses, thrown his way.
he will never, no matter what the game plan is, be able to compete agaisnt pacquaio and the same goes for a prime margarito.
He would fold like a card-house. He defence is leaky and his stamina is not good enough.

Having the great Santiago as his main corner man and falling all fight constantly on his left foot didn't do any good for Cotto in that fight. He consistantly fought the same distance that favor Pac and Pac had no fear of a right hand comming which he was open all night.
Cotto has taken to many beatings and with the late improvements he might fare a lil better but I don't see him winning.
So cottos career has come down to mistakes?
I think he would have done better if he had a good trainer back then.. He had a young trainer that knew less about boxing than him. Cotto's best bet was to box pacquaio. He has a brilliant jab. Used it to beat Mosely. But mixing it up with Manny is a bad idea for anyone.
Having said that.. It's also really hard to keep Manny at bay. I think with the right strategy he could have done better but not won the fight.
cotto will never be able to keep himself from getting into exchanges with pac its just not his style.and i dont care if steward is in his corner or not i still see the same fighter as always which is a pretty damn good fighter but not quite good enough to beat pac.
cotto doenst have the stamina/durability to deal with pacquiao, end of.....maybe in his prime he wouldve survived a pacquiao onslought down the stretch and walked away with a decision fighting the perfect fight.....but pacquiao would still have the stylistic advantage.
Pac is just too fast and too powerful for Cotto. Cotto should forget about Pac and focus on the cheater.
plus Cotto doesn't use his RIGHT hand enough to be able to compete with Manny....thats what I got from their fight...Manny's 2 fisted attack trumps Cotto's 1 fisted all day :boxing:
Cotto is just not as good a fighter as Pacquiao is. Pac is faster, more accurate, throws more punches, has much better footwork. Pac even takes less punches then Cotto does in exchanges.
Cotto might be able to hold his own for the first few rounds, but Pac is better conditioned.
IMHO to beat Pac, Cotto needs a complete transformation as a boxer, and so far it hasn't happened, or be in the best condition of his whole career.
Yeah, tell that to his daddy Marquez--who outboxed him for two fights...please, son.
right, because marquez wasn't getting smacked in the mouth and tripping all over the ring
you're gonna get caught, and you'r gonna get caught big, end of
and even tho you trolls dont like to admit it, those marquez fights were very close.
you get the wrong idea cuz marquez holds his head like an almost immovable object, even when he gets hurt or knocked down you dont see his head snapping, doesn't mean pacquiao was'nt obviously landing
