Was it just me or did anyone else notice that Cotto seemed hesitant to let his hands go in the fight last night? And im not talking about him not engaging when Mayorga was goading him, i just mean he wasnt as active as usual and didnt look as confident. Maybe i was reading to much into it. What you guys think?
he did say he felt it every time Mayorga landed a punch, so i think he didnt want get caught by any of stupid sh*t so he decided to outbox him. hes done it before, like against mosley and Abdullayev
Mayorga also said himself that Cotto hit very hard too
I thought he picked his spots well and boxed effectively, but Mayorga was open for a lot of shots that Cotto didn't take advantage of.
Yeah, i agree there were a few times he could have followed up on a few nice jabs with that "improved right hand" (shoulder surgery), but didn't. I think a few times he was a bit overcautious, but stayed very focused on his own gameplan.
I give him a lot of credit for not fighting Mayorga's fight. Cotto's a good boxer. Great Jab, just needs to follow through on those opportunities, like AllEyesOpen said. He can afford to take a few more well calculated chances, but did what needed to get the job done. Kudos to both guys. Great fight.

This is how i saw it. Everyone knows i love Cotto but one thing he does that i feel he shouldnt is admire his work, he will throw a shot or two and just step back and take a look instead of following it up, just like the triple jab he landed on Mayorga but failed to come with the right

see thats what i thought too, fighting like a tiny version of Klitschko. Very cautious
He is way more cautious now. I think it has to do with a new boxing fighting style taught by Steward and the fact that he carries more weight, resulting in less stamina.
He threw a lot more body shots than some of his more recent fights.
I think he was conserving his energy late and was just throwing his jab.
The 7th round may have made him weary of opening up.
He looked to have a good amount of energy in the 12th.
Or it could have been adrenaline from the knockdown.
He wasn't on his bike as much like late in the Clottey and Pac fights. Very good.
I was actually surprised that Miguel traded so much in the first two rounds with Mayorga, I expected him to be more careful. Thats what impressed me, he traded and came out on top in most exchanges. He was particularly impressive in the first half of the fight.:boxing: :notworthy
Get used to it, it's the new Miquel Cotto. He fought very cautiously and tenative and threw few body punches. He's boxes more and doesn't dish out punishment like he used to...
