Cotto did not looked awesome but by no means he looked like a shot fighter. That was probably the best Mayorga we seen since the two Forrest fights and Cotto gameplan was to box Mayorga and not fall in Mayorgas game of brawling. Mayorga was actually trying to move away most of the time to catch Cotto coming in with counters and brawls so getting an early KO against a fighter with a good chin who is bigger and punches hard is tough. Mayorga also looked ****ing fast so stop the BS. Cotto looked good against a naturally bigger man who punches hard and actually came in in shape.
its not the fact that he got hit its the fact that he got hit with the same overhand right over and over again.. and mayorga does throw alot of crazy **** but its all wide, telegraphed punches and he needs to have u right in front of him and his feet set to let em go.
i expected cotto to turn him and not let him get of that many punches, and when mayorga did punch get out of the way of much more than he did.
i think saying cotto looked shot is an overstatement too but he didnt look good at all, i think hes done as an elite fighter. has been ever since the margarito fight, when matched well he can still win fights but lets be honest. prime cotto wouldve walked right through mayorga in a few rounds.
Say what? No one has walked right through Mayorga and finished him in a few rounds....not to mention guys like Oscar, Mosley, and Tito are all bigger punchers than Cotto. Took Oscar 6 rounds, took Tito 8 rounds, and took Mosley 12.
He was bit up and down for me. In some stages of the fight he boxed beautifully, the 3 round particular(IIRC) but there were times when he had some wild swings reminiscent of Mayorga himself and looked a bit laboured.
Mayorga looked pretty good however, much better then expecting, i am sure hes got another fight him, so was a little surprised to hear him say he will retire. Personally i would love to see Mayorga vs Margarito, would be epic.
Also Cotto's chin stood up pretty well, and he did take some bombs from Mayorga, so yeah, hes by no means shot, IMO, but not prime either, though when he actually lost his prime is disputable, some could argue as far back as post Mosley..

I disagree.. Cotto still has his skills intact and he clearly showed it in that fight. One thing I noticed though is the tenacity seems to have diminished.
As I was saying in the other thread, Emanuel Steward has to do something in this area.
As sure as the sun rises from the east, Margarito will be throwing a ton more punches than what Mayorga did in that recent fight.
Why don't you watch the fight and then make an assessment??
Why would he do that? Ice tea hates Cotto.
He looked good. Maybe a little tired towards the end. But he moved well and threw great heavy shots.
Every fighter gets older and moves past their prime, but Cotto is still a very good fighter.
Sergio would rape him tho.
Yeah, i see this as a mismatch, kinda like Cotto-Pac. However, i think he beats margo, in a fair fight.
Just watched the fight. Cotto did not impress me, I think 154 is the wrong weight for him. His body looked soft and out of shape. He should think about going down in weight were he looked much better.

I am going to have to rain on Cotto's parade because I got no choice. Let's have an asessment of Cotto's last two fights. Yuri Foreman is a guy who just lost to a bum last night in Wolak. That fight tells us zilch about how Cotto would do against the top guys right now.
As far as Mayorga goes, you ever notice of how better fighters than Cotto who beat him even went on to lose their next fights? Tito, Oscar (I think that version at least is probably better than the Cotto of today), and Shane (I'd say he's more on Cotto's level) on top of looking bad in his last couple fights.
I want to know what in the fuck does beating Mayorga right now prove basically? Can someone explain this to me?
Now I'll admit I didn't see the fight and maybe I am willing to go by some peoples' word that he showed up in better shape than he usually does. It still doesn't change the fact that a win over him don't prove shit.
I know Cotto is suspect right now as it stands, and that's why I don't expect him to fight guys like Martinez, Kirkland, Angulo, or Lara. But why can't the stans just accept this as well?

In all fairness Mayorga looked much stronger than cotto but despite that Cotto won off boxing him and staying composed. I think with that being said he still has what it takes to win but he does need to improve his defense. He still can't handle pressure well.
Seriously?
I mean... Seriously?
Hey Homie dont doubt Cotto, just get on the NSB Cotto bandwagon and everything will be alright!! Cotto will make history by moving through 160-168 and beating Martinez and Bute!!! With Steward in his corner nothing can go wrong!!!!!!
Cotto looked like an ATG last night!! He put that Elite Fighter Mayorga on his ass and was just toying with him all night, It was like a sparring session for Cotto. Hell beware Martinez and Bute, Cotto is coming for you guys!!!WAR COTTO!!!!!!!

Mayorga was in good shape but he mostly just put on a show most rounds. When he did take moments to pressure Cotto and throw punches, he was far more successful then he should have been. The one round he consistently pressured Cotto he beat his ass for much the round.
If last night proved anything about Cotto, it's that he is no where near the guy he used to be.

Compared to 3 yrs ago, im sorry to say this but, he doesnt have the same explosion or hunger from what i saw....sorry, he aint the same fighter he was before Margarito and Pac....
I agree, as I Cotto fan I wish the result spoke for itself but it doesn't. In a Margarito rematch I hate to admit but I think Margarito stops him again.
Cotto did loo a little past it, but he also showed some improvement, in terms of his balance and the variety of punches in his arsenal. Also his defense was slightly improved. He just seems a little small for 154.
Gotta disagree with the TS completely. Mayorga might have been in decent shape but he didn't have the same speed and power behind his punches compared to when he fought DLH, much less Forrest.
I've watched all of Mayorga's career and in this fight his punches just didn't have the power they used to and he wasn't even able to keep up a solid assult before gassing out. He fought in 1 to 2 bursts per round, Cotto had plent of opportunity to land at will but he was hesitant. DLH looked better against a better Mayorga then Cotto did against a way past his prime one.
