We all know he's just twenty years old, but that goes out the window once you have a belt. That's it, you've made the conscious decision to challenge for a world championship and must now play with the big boys.
I would have no problem if Alvarez continued to fight less than stellar opposition for the next year or so as long as he wasn't taking up HBO airtime. But now that he is in the spotlight, he must deliver.
You can blame Golden Boy for moving Canelo along too quickly, but you can't have the cake and not share it so to speak. Legitimate contenders must now get a crack at that belt. And if GB had no intention of putting Alvarez against top tier opposition they should have never expedited him to this point.
If he wants to be a man, his age can no longer be used as a factor. "oh but he's so young, he needs time to develop..." Sorry, but if anything he's already bigger than some of the guys in the division, both figuratively and literally.
No hate against the guy, he's very talented and has a bright future, but we can no longer give him a break.
Blame, Golden Boy, the WBC, or HBO, but he is not longer a prospect, but officially a champion. If you want to grow up so quickly you can't expect to have the same responsibilities you had as a child.
Yes, to us fans he may still be a "prospect," but they've technically made him a champion, and that's where my problem is. It is one or the other. Each comes with its pros and cons that he has to face.
Being a champion in today's boxing means nothing most of the time so imo he is still just a talented but flawed prospect with potential who is being moved along correctly. I just want HBO and these Canelo fans to call it like it is.
Canelo is a talented young prospect with potential who imo is being matched properly and who shouldnt be rushed. My problem has nothing to do with Alvarez and has more to do with HBO,Golden Boy,and the WBC who is trying to con us into thinking this guy is Chavez now.

So because YOU think that is what a belt means he should have to ruin a potential hundreds of millions dollar career.
Smart people know a belt means nothing.
Like it or not a belt matters in boxing, regardless of how ridiculous the situation has gotten currently. Boxers work their a$$ off to get a title shot, it's one concrete incentive they have. I'll give you Vanes Martirosyan as an example. He gets a lot of hate on here, but is another young fighter begging for a title-fight for the past year. He hasn't gotten it yet, but will be facing Saul Roman on April 23rd to become the mandatory to Alvarez's title. Will Canelo fight him? Does Vanes count as one of the two easy fights Canelo said he wanted to take before stepping it up, or is Vanes a legitimate threat according to Golden Boy? If you won't defend, vacate the title.
And with the type of following he has he doesnt need to be rushed into anything stupid. He really needs a new trainer if he really wants to get better.
yeah, he hasnt worked on his flaws, this fight showed that. i hope he does something about that before its too late..
So every fighter that fights a tons of eliminators and regional titles to get a chance at the belt is wasting his time?
I guess that championship means nothing to them too right?
It's not just Spray. It's every fighter ranked by that organization.
Unified comes after he defends and fights other fighters. It means he's among the best in the world and takes on challenges.
Canelo should be expected to fight a top 5 guy ranked by his organization if he has the belt.
Otherwise, he can give it up if he likes.
We don't have to like the status quo.
Most of us want a title to mean something.
To act like it means nothing at all is an insult to a lot of fighters.
you know in reality its not like that right? who you know and obviously winning gets you belts in some cases. it sucks, but its true. how many times have we seen champs defending belts against fighters who didn't deserve that shot? alvarez will deff be fighting top opposition IN the future (after 2 fights like he said he wanted) and he can do so with DLH and sulaiman on his side.
World champion= best in the world
He's not a unified world cahmpion!!!!! You mean to tell me every paper title holder+best in the world. Are you serious?
So because YOU think that is what a belt means he should have to ruin a potential hundreds of millions dollar career.
Smart people know a belt means nothing.
THANK YOU EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!! Why is this so hard for peopke to understand.
Berto is further along in comp. Its the same formula Canelo is using. He will have to keep fighting smaller guys or take on a good prospect such as Kirkland. Lets get the bullsh*t out of the way and dont all of a sudden make Kirkland elite. Take that fight and show us how tough you are. Dont get tough with a guy you know you can bully.
Did i say Kirkland was elite? This is the formula every up and coming fighter uses. Oscar used it,Floyd used it,Vargas, to name a few. Berto is well past the point where he should have fought a higher level fighter.
I wanna see the guy take the tougher fights, and I think he will. We don't even know who his next figh is and people are piling on like he is fighting some tomatoe can already. All I said is he doesn't belong in the ring with division elites yet, like some people herewanna see already.
Not quite that simple, if you have a world title you are knowingly or not claiming to be the best in the world and should have to prove it against the best comp.
If he doesn't want to do that yet then fine he should vacate until he is big enough to play in that sand box.
So because YOU think that is what a belt means he should have to ruin a potential hundreds of millions dollar career.

no people want to see him fail bc of the hype he is geting. Golden boy need to takes his time with him and not rush him into fights but if he is goin to keep the belt he needs to fight top contenders but not elites bc he is a work in progress and would loose right now.
At least you are objective and this is all I'm saying. It's not his fault he is being hyped. This is what HBO does, he's a young talented kid that has the public interest and MOST IMPORTANTLY SALES TICKETS!!!!!! I agree he can fight top contenders and not the Matthew Hatton's of the world, but he is not ready for the elites. That's al I'm saying.
You don't have to agree with me as long as you are able to be objective. Props to you.
I can only imagine if Canelo ever reaches P4P status...My goodness his fan base will be worse than Pac and Floyd combine.
They're already are willing to give him all types of passes and have all types of excuses for him....
Sigh...
Here we go. The dude has barely started his career and people are already over dramatizing and HATING!!!!!!! Give the dude a chance before you pre-determine he is overhyped and won't live up to potential. I'm not saying he is gonna be the best Mexican fighter ever, he may not be. let's just wait and see.
It is a promotional tool that we as fans must take back from the promoters and start holding its holders accountable for.
Here comes the essence of this argument. Golden Boy will now label Canelo as a champion to sell tickets. He is no longer a prospect. You cannot have this double standard or use each term whenever it suits you.
Ok well that was a bad choice of words. He is not a prospect but still a very young fighter that could possibly be something great, if he is not ruined the way Vargas was. Do you not agree with that?
You may not appreciate my example, but here it goes.
I'm walking down the street and see a beautiful woman who offers to sleep with me. Hardly any man would turn her down, so I agree. I get her pregnant that night and must now face the consequences. I had my fun, but will have to raise a child.
The belt is that child for Canelo now. If he wasn't ready, don't accept the challenge. Simple as that. You may ask but who would turn it down? And that is irrelevant.
Belts are a promotional tool nothing more.
Here is an actual example, I have a company(we'll call it Canelo Inc), someone famous likes my product(we'll call them the WB Carter) they talk and write about it. Are they now a spokes person do I have to pay them, NO. They liked they wanted to promote it on there own.
The WBC wanted to give Canelo there belt he doesn't bear any extra responsibility it was there choice.

The point I am making is that YES he needs to step up the competition, but I think we all know he is not ready to see him fight the elite of the division.
How many division champions are atually fighting one another ad unifying belts? Not many.
I'm just saying I don't wanna see thins kid pushed to hard to fast and be ruined before we actually get an opportunity to see how good he can be. What is wrong with that? The people that wanna se him thrown into the fire right away are the HATERS that just wanna see him lose and say he was a hype job, which I don't beleive he is. I don't think he has fully lived up to the hype th this point but with time I think he will.
He has all tools, intangibles, and composure of a veteran fighter at a young age but still has things to learn ad I don't wanna see the guy ruined.
I wanna see him against elite competition because he may surprise a lot of people all I'm saying is it doesn't have to be tomorrow.
I can only imagine if Canelo ever reaches P4P status...My goodness his fan base will be worse than Pac and Floyd combine.

it was funny when max kellerman was pushing the question as if he was oblivious to the answer on why his mexican fans love him so much and how JMM and all their other champions failed to connect to such degree.
people and their inferiority complexes these days. blame the american media. :nonono:
A title is a promotional tool THAT IS IT. What is so hard to understand?
Technically that means nothing

People that wanna see him be pushed to fast to soon are just haters that wanna see him lose so they can say " I told you so". He already has all the mechanics and composure for his young age of a veteran fighter. Whty would his team push to fast and ruin him before he is ready. Yes step up the competition but he is not ready for the elite of the division yet.
If they play his carrer smart we could see the beginning of a young prospect turn into a great fighter.
Here comes the essence of this argument. Golden Boy will now label Canelo as a champion to sell tickets. He is no longer a prospect. You cannot have this double standard or use each term whenever it suits you.
Exactly, but it looks like he'll be another Andre Berto sitting fat on the belt fighting bums on HBO.
That is a ridiculous comparison. Alvarez is 20 yrs old and still in the early early stages of his career Berto should have stepped long ago and continues to fight nobody. He's also not 20, say what you want he needs to continue to step up the cpmpetiton but not be pushed to fast snd ruined like Vargas was.
HATERS ARE GONNA HATE!!!!!!!!!
