Big mistake. When he was tired he could get some time so that he can get some air and continue to move. Also, it would get him out of some trouble on the ropes. His lack of clinching is one of the reasons I felt Rios would get to him after the 6th round.
I swear you never know what Cortez will show up..Is it gonna be the Joe that is for boxers letting them clinch and hold all night long and quickly breaking umm when the boxer becomes tired(so the pressure fighter can't do any work inside)??Or the Joe that lets umm work on the inside, which is the better ref for a pressure fighter..You never know, but what I do know is that Joe needs to hang umm up..He was way outta position at the end of that fight,he should have been in that corner seeing the action instead of behind Rios back looking to make some dramatic impact on the fight..Acosta took some shots he really should not have taken in there..Clean too..
Bolded is Absolutely the truth bruh. This bost is 100% :stampofapproval:.
Right!!!!! Acosta showed in the begining of the fight that he was stronger than Rios initially. But Rios became stronger as the fight wore on, due to the body work, and Acosta not being conditioned to clinch and move so often. I agree with the blatent rabbit punches. I was surprised that Joe didnt give him a hard warning for them.

U should of switched it over to the UFC fight if u wanted to see dry humping!
Rios fuked him up!
:approval stamp:
Cortez ref skills have been very questionable for a while now...Firm but fair...yeah, ok.
And what he doesn't understand I'd Rios wore him down so much that he didn't have the strength to hold Rios late in the fight.....
Everytime he would try to clinch Rios would push him offend hit him with some thudding shots.....
Also, Acosta hit Rios with a lot of punches behind the head early in the fight when they were in the clinch....

I'm sure that many more posters bysides myself have said what I'm finna say but.................................What fight were YOU watching. He was clinching so much I'm surprised Joe didnt give him a hard warning for it or deduct a point. :nonono:

I thought he was clinching a lot..Rio's stayed discipline and kept right on working..But Acosta was clinching all threw the fight..
Watched it again and I still disagree with the people that replied here saying that he clinched a lot. I don't see it. You know when a fight hasn't had too much clinching? When Joe Cortez hasn't become the main event. I actually think this fight was pretty free flowing based on the styles
The clinches that did happen were because of the styles (where Rios is coming forward and they get tangled up). What I meant by starting this thread is that it would be a smarter move on Acosta's part to use clinching as a strategy. Watch the 9th round. That round is basically Acosta with his back on the ropes trading with Rios, and with arm punches :lol1: Acosta was too comfortable on the ropes imo. He just loves that move where he leans down to the right and looks for that right uppercut. That wasn't there for him in this fight as much as the Antillon fight because Rios doesn't lean in like Antillon.
Well I am actually more interested in seeing how much he clinched after the 5th round, and particularly after he was hurt/got in trouble on the ropes. I'll get to see the fight properly this time.
But yeah, great job by Rios. When he got hurt, I was like "damn son, your game is based on your chin holding up, can't afford to get hurt." But it didn't happen again. Great heart and pressure. Cutting off the ring was done very well. Rios is a beast.
The fight went as I expected. Was just wondering from an Acosta perspective what he could have done better.
Well you are right in that he didn't clinch after about the 5th or 6th but like I said, I think it was more because of what Rios was doing and not so much what Acosta wasn't doing.
I thought Acosta fought a great fight strategy wise but unless your in there taking the shots you really don't realize how bad he's being hurt and he was getting damaged.
No seriously, not trying to argue with you he was clinching none stop in the early rounds but like I said in another thread, it's easier said than done.

To be fair I was watching it while doing some stuff at the same time. Might not have paid as much attention. I'll watch it again..........

I have always been taught that pressure and timing nullify speed. Rios overwhelmed Acosta and once he started wearing him down, he wasn't strong enough to clinch.
If you notice, a jab knocked him down the first time, that shows you how worn he was.
What fight were you watching? Hahaha he did nothing but clinch, the difference was Rios had better defense in the second half of the fight and landed that left hook and upper cut combo that was wearing Acosta down.

Well not nearly enough imo. Many times he was standing there and trading as well

acosta was clinching a lot, but cortez was breaking them up alot so he didn't get much rest.
plus, rios was always busy and working. even the pushing and shoving was taking it's toll on acosta.
rios looks stronger than acosta.

Rios fuked him up!
He was trying to wrap up and Rios just kept hitting him. It wasn't like he didn't know to clinch, he just couldn't actually get his arms around Bam Bam consistently enough to save himself.
