and he/she gets up but aren't responsive to the ref, can a ref just grab their gloves and wipe it for them to continue. I thought the fighter have to do it them self to show the ref that they are OK.
The corner is not going to do that because they probably thought that the ref was going to stop it. The ref was trying to get an answer from Montiel and he wasn't responding so the corner probably thought that the ref was going to stop it. The ref just grabbed Montiel gloves and tapped for him like he was doing it and let him continued LOL.
If I am in the corner of a fighter and he takes a punch like that, drops, and begins showing signs of a convulsion or seizure, I would immediately rush the ring to provide medical support. Forget waiting for the ref to stop it.
they can't. You're absolutely right. I made a couple threads about this after the fight. lots of people on this site have no idea what they are talking about.
If the fighter is unresponsive and does not come forward to the ref the rule is ref must stop the fight in order to protect the safety of the fighter. The people in this board keep talking about being a "warrior" and giving the champ the benefit of the doubt. Has nothing to do with that it's basic rules and safety.
I know that kevin Iole of yahoo boxing wrote about this and even formally complained to Keith Keizer of NSAC.
Uh, they can "just grab" the gloves because they have to. Boxers aren't obligated to hand their gloves to the referee for wiping. The only thing the boxer needs to do is show some sign of awareness in order to fight on. If they can do that, the referee is supposed to wipe their gloves before continuing the fight.
One example I can think of is for all three of the knockdowns in Pacquiao vs. Marquez 1, Cortez reached out for Marquez's gloves to wipe them each time.
Montiel did respond, if only a little. After he got up, he looked over at his corner and tilted his head, then when the ref is telling him to come to him, he turns his hands over, like "I'm here." He also could have spoken to the ref for all we know. Once he jumped to his feet, it wasn't like he was stumbling around like Darchinyan was.
Corner should have thrown in the towel and rushed to provide medical help once Montiel started shaking on the ground. However, the ref was wrong to grab Montiel's gloves and let him continue.

It probably happened so fast that the corner thought the ref was going to stop it. Anyway the ref is the third man in the ring so it's his call. The point is you cannot just grab a unresponsive fighter gloves and tap it for him/her if he/she can't do it LOL. That's like if a MMA fighter was fighting and the ref just took his hand and tap it out for him.
Your killing me with this he/she and he/she crap. You dont have to be politically correct, besides we are talking on boxingscene.com which is 99.9999 percent of the time going to be about males boxing. What has this country come too????
to answer the thread..the ref SHOULD stop it..but his corner shouldve stepped in

Sure it should have been stopped, probably when Montiel had trouble getting up, but it's far from the worse call by a ref.
It's not even a case of worse call or not, it's a case that I just think you cannot just grab a fighter gloves and tap it for them. If you're telling a fighter,'are you Ok', and the fighter is just standing there, you can't just grab his gloves and tap it for him/her LOL.
But I don't think you can just grab a fighter gloves and wipe it for them if they can't do it them self LOL.

It's the refs call, if he felt Montiel could continue then so be it. Wanna talk about refs, go back to Cotto/Foremen that mother****er didn't want that fight to end.

I don't know why he even let Montiel get up really, just look at the way he was twitching on the floor. When the ref told him to walk to him he just stood there as well.
nah, you let montiel get up, but if he doesn't follow your directions, that mofo is pretty much out on his feet.

the fact that montiel didn't walk foward when the ref told him too should've told the ref to stop the fight.

The ref has to grab them and wipe them on his shirt...if you don't respond to his command then he may stop it right then and there.
But don't the fighter have to tap their gloves and stick it out to the ref so he can wipe it for them. I thought the ref can't tap it for the fighter.
