guess Louis was a dirty racist too.
oh, Blackburn too. I see.
Johnson was a bad person. Why should I respect him as an individual?
Their opinions don't help your argument, I never said anyone was dirty  and I will happily call someone an idiot if they claimed Pacquiao was top 5 all-time, when Roy Jones would agree with them.
" Jack Johnson ruined boxing for blacks," he wrote, "especially black heavyweights."

no, its fact. he set blacks back in society. When Joe Louis beat Schmeling, America looked at him as a fellow American, and not as just a black. that was the first time something like that had happened, and eased racial tension in society greatly.
Johnson represented blacks at the time. its stupid to judge a whole race by one person, but racists are stupid to begin with. and there was a lot of racism at the time. all he had to do was act somewhat respectful and racist society might have looked at other blacks in a more positive way. but nope, Johnson put them in a negative light.
it has nothing to do with race. as an individual, Johnson was a jackass. just as many other boxers have been.
He set blacks back in the eyes of ignorant racists, how did he actually set blacks back? He did what he wanted to without restrain, and with bravery, he wasn't the yes Mas'er house negro that white society wanted him to be, he showed people that you don't have to act in a certain way because of your colour, just because the racists reacted in a certain way it does not mean he set them back, you have no proof that he set blacks back other than simply stating that it is fact.
You claimed that he set blacks back, that is only the view of ignorant racists.

Johnson was green as well. You're talking about a era devoid of building up fighter's. There was no grooming, or building a fighter up. You fought, you won or lost, you fought again. I can understand that you dont care for Jack Johnson, thats fine to each his own. But dont drop the weight of American on his shoulders, and get pissed because you dont like how he carried the burden. As far as I'm concerned. He uplifted the Black race farther than you could possibly imagine, by showing them. You can do and be what the hell ever you want to be, be with whoever you want, however you want, and enjoy the fruits of your hard labor all at the same time. Regardless of racisim.
Oh and unless you happened to meet him before 1946. How the hell do you knkow he was a jerk. I dont recal reading any articles stating such.
lets see...broke laws, cheated on his wife, beat a woman until she committed suicide...yeah, jerk is too much of a compliment.
uplifted them? thats nice. he sure as hell didnt help their equality issues though. back then there was a ridiculous amount of racism and ignorance. Im sure a lot of racists looked at Johnson(the most well known AA at the time, unless Im mistaken) as the representation of all blacks. retarded? absolutely, they were morons. but most racists are. if he actually at least attempted to look like a good person, then in a way he would have made all blacks look better.
with power comes responsibility. I dont care if its even a singer or celebrity. I would call them jackasses too, if they had that much influence and werent good role models.
LOL. only on this website can I be accused of being a 'self-hating-white black lover' and also a racist against blacks.
Im saying this: he didnt do anything for blacks at the time, at a time when black society could have really used his help. Did he necessarily have to? not really. but why should I respect him as a person? If you have power and influence over people, then you should automatically at least attempt to be a good role model and do some good, its not even a racism issue.
flat out: he had the power and positioning to really advance black society. but what did he do? taunted opponents, and then refused blacks title shots, just as he had to deal with once a part of time. he also beat a woman until she committed suicide, during his title reign. real nice. great representation of blacks you showed there.
I dont see why I should ever respect him as a person.
You claimed that he set blacks back, that is only the view of ignorant racists.
I reason I brought it up is, that every so often you hear about John McCain or someone else trying to get the guy posthumoursly pardoned...
Pres. Obama has not signed a pardon for Jack Johnson as of yet. But his surviving relatives are still actively trying to get him pardoned. I think the effort is being spearheaded by his great, great, grand niece.
I don't care about you calling him overrated, but your attitude reaks of racism, your saying he has to be respectful because hes black makes absolutely no sense, I don't see how he was disrespectful either please explain that? What I do see is that he was the one being disrespected by almost everyone he fought. He just did what he wanted to, he shouldn't have to act in a certain way to make stupid ignorant racists not criticise him, he acted the way he wanted despite his colour thats a good example for people in general.

No. He's dead, there are more important issues going on in this world.

He was. Tommy's corner damn near got Tommy DQ'd if I remember correctly because they were callin Jack every name under the sun, the whole while Jack, was holdin Tommy up from goin down so he could punish him for their words.
Because he was a jerk. He was one of the first blacks in the spotlight, if he actually wanted to help their personal image then he could have at least have attempted to act respectful. Do I know how it felt to be in his position during the time? of course not. but as a individual person, I dont see why I should respect him.

McVea was a teenager. give me a break. far from prime.
Jeannette was very green, and barely had any fights whatsoever when he fought Johnson...let alone wins.
Bill and Ferguson were good wins.
Johnson is incredbily overrated. good HW? absolutely. top 5? hell no. Harry Wills>Jack Johnson.

How does he set black backwards, he was not responsible for racist stereotyping, if he does something wrong what does him being black have to do with it, you sound like a racist yourself. Jeanette, Mcvea, Bill, and Ferguson were not less than 170lbs, jackass. Its clear that you hate that era of boxing, stop with your biased transparent crap that you constantly spout out.

Jack Johnson was a jackass and overrated. If anything he set blacks backwards with the way he acted outside the ring, and the only good fighters he beat weighed 170lbs or less. he won by leaning all over opponents constantly. One he became champon, he shunned fellow blacks and didnt let guys like non-156lb Langford get a title shot.
Joe Louis was far more important to AAs than Johnson, who is only overrated because of being the first HW black champion(which means very little).

a real legend.
so sad that there were so many people that were so ignorant and hateful, and for no good reasons what so ever. still sad that some still are,but its getting better, colour is no reason to be a hater.
But he really stuck it to them!.:boxing:
