Seriously, the 2 biggest MMA stars are gone, embarassed, destroyed, Fedor vs. Brock would have been the biggest MMA event of all time 6 months ago, and now who knows if either one will even fight again. Its the equivalent of Floyd and Manny both losing back to back and both pondering retirement. If boxing stepped up its game right now, and yes I know theres no entity called "boxing", but if people in the sport just cut the **** and realized they could help the sport and their future earnings, they could really take a dent out of MMA popularity by bringing the world Klitschko vs. Haye and Floyd vs. Manny. MMA took advantage of boxing stars not fighting eachother, the big fights falling through or being too far apart, now if Boxing put on the full court press they might end this dry humping fad once and for all.
MMA per se is just budding up in the mainstream. Mixed Martial arts has been around decades before under no particular commercial banner, most particular in Japan and in Brazil. MMA wont be gone.... maybe ur refering to the latest outage in the UFC. Thats just one brand, you still have Strikeforce to contend with and if you feel like it, go find some streams that cater to japanese MMA...
MMA is here to stick, it wont die down as figuratively like the TS says....but i do agree that boxing need to step up and try to invite the younger gen to watch the fights.....not just to make lumps of profit by bringing on fights and building on the hype that is not healthy to the general publics consumption (go dig what are those if you aint knowing yet).... we need to see fights that thrills is noteworthy of a backroom discussion even in college dorms.... how to do that? go figure it out for ourselves, Boxing media has brains in it to overkill a hype, why not use that to build up sensible fights ryt?
No, just look at this site and how many ppl hate MMA on here, we are in the minority I think and many MMA fans I talk to don't watch boxing at all.
Its two different products even if they have similarities.
Dana White wont shut the hell up about boxing. All their commentators reference Mike Tyson when giving props to a fighter. Id say MMA mentions boxing more than HBO or FNF mentions mma...and thats with the "mma minute"
I think MMA is in serious trouble because their biggest stars keep getting whacked...They cant put two good years together, meanwhile Floyd Mayweather, Pacquiao, Klitschkos and David Haye have been undefeated since 2005.
Lidell
Gracies
Courtour
Rampage
Brock
Fedor
All got exposed once they became mainstream to Americans. Anderson Silva is aging, and GSP is dead if he moves up in weight. Its slowly becoming a flavor of the month club, and will soon be cannibalized by mediocrity.
You have no idea wtf you are talking about Brock a ppv attraction? yes Fedor? no he hasn't even been on a successful PPV and isn't very well known to the casual fan.
The stars in MMA who can consistently pull in ppv numbers are guys like GSP, Penn, Anderson, Rampage and so on and there is several guys right now that are going to be huge ppv draws in the future like Jones, Aldo, Pettis. The UFC consistently on a monthly basis does between 300k-1million buys can't say the same thing for boxing when only 2-3 shows a year can pull that off.
The UFC just smashed it's attendance record selling 50,000 tickets for an event in Canada headlined by GSP wait till GSP vs Anderson they will show Manny how to fill the Cowboy stadium (if the fights ends up there)
rofl, old stars die and new ones are born.....just watch for this phenom to blow up soon.

Skilled, exciting, and unorthodox. He's definitely going to be a star. I hope he beats Shogun.
neither sport is anything close to dying. but as a boxing fan, im too ashamed to even speak to friends and family about it anymore cause its a complete joke.
lucky to get 5 good fights a year and the undercards are either woeful, non existent or one fight outdoes every other, including the one sided main event.
boxing has moments where it shines but for a regular fix of competitive fighting, MMA is where Ill be looking 1-2 times a month minimum.

huh?... dead?... when did this happen?
Here's another proof on how big MMA has gotten. I was just talking to this Filipino kid at the airport(he just arrived from the Philippines) and I asked him which is more popular with Filipinos, Boxing or MMA. He said MMA, if it ain't PAC fighting then Pinoys in general don't really follow boxing like the way they tune in to MMA fights.
MMA fights might not have an entire country glued to the t.v. like a PAC fight, but, in general, people pay more attention to MMA.
Don't you find this a lil crazy(eventhough it was just a perception of one person). A country whose major celebrity happens to be a boxer, but, the sport of boxing itself takes a backseat to MMA.
this proves that pac fans are the most retarded boxing ''fans''
maybe not for you and for a lot of people.
a lot of ufc's fans watch to watch ufc.
yes they'll be more attracted if there's bigger stars fighting but they generally watch ufc to see ufc fights.
for example.....
i have friends who are both boxing and mma casual fans.
when they call me up for a fight party for boxing they say , "we ordered the mayweather fight or pacquiao fight."
when they call me up for a fight party for ufc they say , "we ordered the ufc"
they're casual fans of both sports but they only order boxing with big stars fighting that they know.
for the ufc , they order most of them even though sometimes they don't really know the guys fighting.
i get the ufc for free so i guess my point of view is a whole lot different
but i know what you mean man in the UFC there is a standard of quality at the end of the night u know ur gonna be entertained no matter who fights
it reminds me of wwf wrestling back in 98 i watched the monthly ppvs not for the big names like the undertaker but for the entertainment value
not really at the end of the day i watched mma for lesnar if i didnt bet on mma i wouldnt care for sexyama vs bisping
btw MMA betting its great despite being missmatches u rarely see a huge favorite go over -600
maybe not for you and for a lot of people.

you guys do know that people buy ufc ppv's to watch ufc and not really fighters right?
that's one advantage they have over boxing.
casual mma fans order ufc to watch the ufc.
casual boxing fans order boxing to watch certain stars only.
not really at the end of the day i watched mma for lesnar if i didnt bet on mma i wouldnt care for sexyama vs bisping

I didn't say that I didn't watch boxing anymore. It just surprised the hell out of me that when I actually talllied it up, I ordered MMA PPVs than I did boxing and I consider myself a boxing fan. So, for that particular year i chose MMA.
How can you not say boxing and MMA are not in direct competition with each other. A fight fan is a fight fan, do you agree ? If so, then obviously MMA and boxing would be in direct competition for those fight fans
You have to remember, most fight fans are on a budget, so, they're gonna be selective with their choices when doling out 45-60 bucks. That's when MMA and boxing get into a head to head competition
not really man i know a guy who refuses to see MMA as hes used to boxing having watched it over a decade, in his mentality if a fight goes to the ground it loses excitement
some other new guys are attracted to MMA due to the natural craving of the whole as real as a fight can get, when they switch to boxing and see unrealistic fights (mayweather winning a fight just by running around or Wlad barely touching a guy with his jab but somehow manages to knock them out)
they just lose interest in the sport let alone pay to watch it
sorry to burst your bubble but mma isnt going anywhere, it's only growing more and more, and they're breeding a whole generation up on it, there are more kids now participating in mma related sports such as judo and ju jitsu more now than ever, those kids coming up are going to have to have a place to go.
boxing is a mainstay, it's just always been uncontrollable and a wild frontier, the major players don't want anything to change in boxing, so until the people demand something be done, it will stay the same as it's always been......
when the sport has the US military as a sponsor and the marketing that it already has in regards to children, you can bet your sweet cherry a$s it's not going anywhere.
The UFC has the luxury of having a massive pool of talent to work with, coupled with a great partnership with a basic cable channel. Dana White can constantly put together PPVs like once every month, in addition to smaller shows on Spike, and not worry about co-promotion bickering and feuding. Spike routinely shows UFC matches, highlights, the reality show, and even the non-broadcast fights before the PPV (they had a record 2 mil viewers before the latest PPV, which helped drive sales).
Top Rank is trying to do the same, only on a bigger scale. The best thing that could happen is if the Dibellas and Shaws of the Boxing world are bought out/absorbed by Arum, as well as GBP's roster merging with them (saw it happen with Mosley, about to happen with Marquez). It's the same thing White did with PRIDE and DREAM, those organizations folded and he absorbed their talent and look how massive MMA has become. The UFC was literally dead in the late 90s and look where it is now.
Boxing needs one commission and one commissioner instead of every state having different rules and leaders. Also need to get rid of the 2 million belts and useless rating organizations and boil it down to one, or at least a few. Top Rank's deal with CBS needs to bear fruit and in addition to Fight Camp 360 being shown, they need to have a show like Top Rank Live a few times a month on a Saturday which features great talent, both established and up and coming, and well-produced, fan-friendly shows. Also wouldn't hurt if TR continued the trend of holding fights in stadiums and making them more accessible for fans and not just Vegas high rollers.
Doing these things would go a LONG way towards fixing the ills of the sport and helping it grow and retake a prominent position. Good points
Why would you choose one or the other though? I just makes no sense to me why the emergence of MMA would make someone not want to watch boxing anymore.
As for the competition, couldn't anything even not combat sport related that costs money on Saturday night that a casual fan would partake in be considered competition like clubs with hot chicks?
Should boxing fans be upset with poon now too?I didn't say that I didn't watch boxing anymore. It just surprised the hell out of me that when I actually talllied it up, I ordered MMA PPVs than I did boxing and I consider myself a boxing fan. So, for that particular year i chose MMA.

Hm.
Wait till Silva vs Pierre is offical. I expect UFC to pull a good 1mil+ and maybe a UFC record in PPV buys for that fight.
Now thats a damn fight. Even as a boxing fan, Silva and Pierre are the ****ing goods in MMA
ufc doesn't even need to pull in 1 mil. per ppv.
300-400k would do.
think about boxing ppv's. who right now outside of floyd and pac can draw 300-400k?
cotto-marg 2? maybe?
you guys do know that people buy ufc ppv's to watch ufc and not really fighters right?

casual mma fans order ufc to watch the ufc.
