Here's my take:
At the very least for championship fights. It would lessen the possibility of draws, also the possibility of having to go to the scorecards considering that it extends the fights hence there might be a chance of the outcome being a KO/TKO. It also gives you a more dramatic fight as 13-15 rounds were tough with both fighters being more tired and limited at that point(not in all fights). A downside is the health of the fighters but IMO fighting 12rnds instead of 15rnds won't make much a a difference in the health of the fighter, just IMO since i've never been neither 12 nor 15 in the ring.
Here's an example of how an outcome can change in a 15 round fight:
Wilfred Benitez- Ray Leonard
Fight went 15 rounds and ended in a TKO in the 15th very close to the last bell(6 seconds) in a very competitive fight where maybe, just maybe it could have been different and there could have been a second fight. Leonard was ahead anyways in the scorecards before anyone comments on that.
Anyways, what are your thoughts?
I rather have the 5min per round for 7 rounds total of 35mins instead of 3min per round for 12 rounds total of 36min. IMO people prefer 1-4 rounds of pure action pack entertainment than a dragging 10-12 round punch and holding/hit and run tactics.
yes, but that's not the question. Also gloves were different back then and the attention from doctors to fighters was less. Consider that back then fighters weren't as protected as much. Medicals, treatment, etc. Not one single fighter died because of ONE fight, not one single fighter ended with Alzheimer because of ONE fight, It was the accumulation of damage and the lack of treatment
This is untrue 120. Very untrue.
You don't exactly see boxers excited and going on strikes to get back 15 rounds, no matter what the reason was that 15 rounds was reduced to 12 rounds. That's because it's enough hard work to prepare your body to go 12 rounds. I can't go 12 rounds, so i'm not gonna ask for some one to go 15 rounds for my entertainment. That's too much and boxing already has enough fighters gassing out even before 12 rounds.
Now Makavelli's idea about OT if a fight is scored a draw sounds better, but an OT of only 1 more round should be enough.
No I don't. But you gotta admit that you have no clue as to the damage that can be sustained in a ring. Ever get out of a ring with no memory of what might have happened in there. Every have that crazy dejavu feeling that you've oddly been there in a past time from eating a right hand. Ever step out of a ring puzzled and oddly confused because if somebody asked you what day or time it might be, or even month because you would not be able to answer them? And you won that fight. Not a clue......Rockin':boxing:
I've had that feeling of leaving a party and not remembering what just happened, does that count? Honestly it's from a fan perspective. We all know it's best to have 12 rounds because of the damage the boxers take, but there are so many great 15 rounders and it makes you wonder how some fights would have turned out.

this thread is from a fan's perspective and what we'd consider entertaining. If you're so bitter about boxing why don't you just walk away from it altogether since you're obviously suffering from negative flashbacks.
Keep the rounds at 12, we are talking about fighter's lives here.
Alot of you guys are saying, whats 3 rounds? if you accumilate that over a boxers career, that is alot of rounds.
There is science that has shown a correlation between rounds fought and brain damage.
i think championship fights that end in a draw should have an 'overtime' of 3 rounds...making it 15
imagine PAC-JMM 1 after the draw announcement? the crowd would know that 3 more rounds were coming...it would be electric
I don't like that. So much rhythm would be taken away. When you basically think that the fight is over and then all of a sudden, no. It makes the match completely different then.
Sometimes I feel like I'm the only fan that's not selfish
12 rounds are enough for the fighters
12 is definitely enough for the fans cause I dont feel like watching a 15 round boxing match
Yup, I miss those 15 round fights. Sometimes those 12 rounders (feel like they) go by too fast.
Could you imagine some of today's fights going 15 rounds? It could have changed several outcomes.
if properly researched and proven just as safe as 12rds i would think 15rders for championship belts of the major sanctioning bodies would be an interesting way to go. tho the rule is never going to change imo
Like I said, I haven't been there myself for 12-15 rounds in one stand. BUT, we are talking about entertainment value and the product is the boxer. So 15 rounds is too brutal, how about 13? Like I said before, boxers are taken care off much more now than what they were before as far as the medical side goes, we have 12oz gloves also and it would only be for championship fights, fukk those interim or regional ones, I'm talking about the world WBC, WBA, etc and include The Ring in there. Also, like I said before, 15rounds isn't the only thing responsible for the tragic outcome of some bouts in that era, Doctors, Trainers, heck even the promoters have much more of the responsibility than the fight going for 15 rounds. And yes, having more ko's brings more of an entertainment value to the sport and you have to consider that
Qa
The real reason they changed it might not have even been for fighter safety anyway. That was the OFFICIAL and PUBLIC reason they changed it.
Boxing back then was on network TV a lot, watch how many good fights were on network TV (Pedroza-Laporte, Spinks-E. Muhammad, Qawi-Davis, etc...) and it was much easier to fit 12 rounds plus intros + interviews in a one hour slot than it was to fit 15 rounds in one hour.
Much like how the official reason they changed to day before weigh-ins was for fighter safety, but you'll find more than just a few people who believe it was from the money lost after the aborted Spinks-E. Muhammad rematch.
You haven't a clue do you.? Lets make it 15 rounds for more drama, because there would be a greater chance of a tko/ko? 3 more rounds would not make that much of a difference? Where do they come from?
Yeah, a down side would be the health of the fighter.
But who cares about the health of the fighter, just as long as we get some dramatic sh*t going down so that we can have something to talk about while at the water tank at work on Monday. F*ck this boxing and technical sh*t, I want to see somebody go down and go down hard man.
You have no idea how it is in there. Especially after 12 rounds of battle, what it's like the next morning, the next week and even the next month while your body tries to heal from the wounds. Some fighters will never recover and some will be forever altered, but that's ok right? They knew what they were getting in to.
Sh*t, what's 3 extra rounds. They are warriors and would have no problem doing three more rounds for our entertainment. After 36 previous minutes of punishment, bodies nearly dehydrated from the heat of the lights and the high rate of work, brains rattled and eyes swollen. F*uck it, lets make them do 9 minutes more.
How many times can you knock your computer off of your desk before it starts not working right and not responding? How many times before it simply does not work anymore? I say, if you haven't already dropped it, that you just slide it right off of your desk and then pick it up, plug it back in and try working on it. No way you say, that could wreck my computer. Well, atleast I would be entertained if you tried...........Rockin':boxing:
Yeah, but you gotta admit 15 rounds is more exciting.
again,
at the end of the day,
what happens more in most fights?
rounds with no knockdowns or rounds with knockdowns?
whats that got to do with it. We're talking about the outcome of the whole fight. Your talking like a knockdown is the only way a round can't be scored 10-9.
IMO it should stay 12, most fighters gas before the 12th imagine how much slower they would fight if it was a 15 rounder.
I only think 15 rounder should be used or MAYBE 13 if its a draw on the judges cards at the end of 12 rounds.
what's more consistently likely?
a round with no knockdowns or a round with knockdowns?
At the end of the day, many fights will not have all rounds scored 10-9, with 6 rounds a piece. From the draws i can recall from the top of my head 10-10 rounds and knockdowns happened.
