we all know he hits hard but is it as hard as ppl make out he stopped ortiz on his feet and only cos ortiz quit and cayo was stopped wi a body shot and he could not stop corley and corley got stopped in the fight before so is it overrated
I think it depends on how you measure power and what you expect it to be able to do in the boxing ring. Maidana has a ridiculous KO percentage so he's obviously not featherfisted by any stretch of the imagination, but I don't think he possesses quite the bone-chilling one punch knockout power that some people seem to think. Rather, his success comes from his relentless seek-and-destroy mindset, his never say die attitude in the ring, and the type of strength and stamina that enables him to throw every punch with mean intentions. This works for him, and has gotten him where he's at, so who's to argue? But if you're arguing in terms of one punch power then I'd personally rate Holt, Alexander and Ortiz above him. Maidana's lack of speed, technique and timing hurt him in this regard. He's a very heavy handed accumulation puncher.
I think his and Khan's power is overrated.
Maidana does not have an iron chin and ate like 300 punches from Khan, solid punches too. Ortiz hurt Maidana and put him down so it's not like Maidana is like a Margarito.
And Khan...I don't care what I saw, he does not have a good chin. For Maidana to land on Khan as much as he did and not finish him, or ever really even hurting him outside of that one huge right hand in the 10th, says to me that he's not a huge puncher.
There are people who overrate it, but on the whole, I think not. He's got serious horseshoes and handgrenades power - if he even comes close, you feel it. He snaps heads back with glancing punches. His technique is **** and he gets too excited, but in terms of raw power, he's got it in spades.
There are really only 2 things you need to observe here: HIS KO percentage and the fact that this guy is a come forward brawler. You can attribute his success to his power which really the only thing going for him with his style of boxing. suggesting that his power is overrated is a little naive
When talking about overrated or underrated.. It all depends on who is doing the rating and how they are doing it...
Id say besides Holt, hes the biggest puncher in the division... We could probably even exclude Holt at this point..
Yeah, Holt is a huge banger, but so many people would look at his KO% and laugh. People just don't understand that power is such a tiny part of it. Maidana's power is very good, but he falls short in other areas which kill a lot of it and make him unable to land clean, flush shots which is the reason he couldn't put away guys like Khan, Corley etc.
Holt is a monstrous puncher but again, he lacks necessary things that would enable him to land those shots clean to take guys out. Tito was a huge puncher, but he was also fast and set them up perfectly so they would land frequently and often without the opponent seeing them.
It's not just about power. It's about how you set it up, can you get them in often and land them enough and also can you keep it up for longer than four/five rounds. Stuff like that. Maidana has amazing power but lacks many of the other things the best power punchers had.
Everyone keeps talking about one shot power and accumulative power. Usually, the only difference is how you set them up. If Maidana could set his up properly and land them without the other guy seeing we would be saying he has amazing one punch KO power but he's slow and the shots are easy to see coming. Hearns on the other hand would set up his power shots like few could and so when his right hand or left hook would land the guy wouldn't ever see it and it's an immediate lights out shot.
Maidana has one punch KO power but just doesn't set them up well and they're easy to see.
He doesnt have one punch ko power but he does have an accumalative power that if you get hit a second or third time you will go down but as Reed says it depends soley on whos doing the rating
IMO Maidana's power is overrated...in order for his power to come to affect he has to widen his punches and cock his fist back...Ortiz to me is the hardest puncher cuz he can drop any opponent with short punches his only flaw is that he's too scared to follow up with a finishing combo when his opponents are almost gone...Maidana has conditioning if you think about it...he throws every punch with bad intentions throughout the whole fight...he threw more punches than Khan did and every punch he threw were his hardest shots...his power would probably be compatible with Lamont's if Lamont widened and cocked back his punches like Maidana does...Maidana's ability to throw these kinda punches without tiring out after the 7th round makes him unique in the division and is the reason why he is a dangareous opponent...if maidana threw short shots with a lil more speed you best believe his power would be enough to keep you honest...
his power is not overrrated the problem with maidana is he lacks fundeltmentals.if he acutally had a trainer that was worth a shiit and taught him to compact his punches and more body weight behind his punches his power would be unreal. gracia would be a perfect trainer for maidana too bad it will never happen
I agree with this post. I think if he had a better trainer that could help him keep his composure more and improve his punch precision, he would be more effective as a power puncher. he gets a bit sloppy at times, and it's those times he needs to be accurate.
Kids got a lot of heart and talent, i think he can do better.

I do generally agree with this rule but people have called him a KO artist and P4P the hardest puncher, and I've never seen his power being underrated on here......maybe its just me.
