One day after USA Today bucked the odds and chose pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao as the “Fighter of the Year” over Argentina’s Sergio Martinez, the prestigious Ring Magazine announced the results of a fan poll in which Pacquiao once again gained the coveted accolade over Martinez.
Respected boxing writer Michael Rosenthal reported that Pacquiao received 71 percent of the votes cast by fans while Martinez got 24 percent, Juan Manuel “Juanma” Lopez and Fernando “KO-Chulito” Montiel 2 percent each and Giovani Segura one percent.
Rosenthal said “the choice for 2010 Fighter of the Year was a no-brainer for most objective observers” citing Sergio Martinez’s decision over Kelly Pavlik to capture the middleweight championship of the world and one-punch knockout of Paul Williams which he said clearly were more impressive than the accomplishments of any other fighter.
However, Rosenthal conceded that “We’re in the era of Manny Pacquiao, though. The world’s greatest fighter is so popular – particularly among his passionate countrymen – that we knew with certainty that he would be the runaway winner of the award. Facts be damned.”
Rosenthal clarified his statements by saying “This isn’t to say that Pacquiao’s one-sided points victories over Joshua Clottey on March 13 at Cowboys Stadium and Antonio Margarito on Nov. 13 in the same venue during the past year were insignificant.”
He noted that Clottey didn’t come to fight but was a legitimate contender on paper. And while Margarito’s talents pale next to those of Pacquiao, the Mexican was the much bigger and stronger of the two. He outweighed Pacquiao by 17 pounds on fight night, which took a physical toll on the winner.
The Ring Magazine writer noted that Pacquiao’s demolition of Margarito at junior middleweight, also gave him a major title in an unprecedented eighth weight class adding “we don’t think much of the alphabet titles but to be a dominating fighter in eight of the 17 weight classes is remarkable.”
Ring Magazine said it wasn’t Pacquiao’s greatest year in terms of accomplishments but it certainly was a productive one and we “shouldn’t downplay the role of the fans who voted for Pacquiao in overwhelming numbers. Boxers don’t perform in a vacuum. The fans are part of the equation, which is why many of us believe a fighter’s ability to entertain the masses is one factor in determining greatness.”
Rosenthal remarked “We love to watch Pacquiao fight, regardless of the opponent. Pacquiao was never in danger of losing to Margarito, for example, but we were in awe of what we saw in the ring nevertheless. This is what Pacquiao gives us fight after fight after fight, which is why he has become a worldwide icon.”
Referring to the feelings of Pacquiao’s Filipino fans, Rosenthal wrote “They burst with pride over the fact that their country has produced the best fighter on the planet who also is universally admired as a person. He’s like a god. Thus, many Filipinos couldn’t possibly look at him objectively, which is why he and not Martinez was voted Fighter of the Year. And who can blame them.”
Glad I missed this thread when it was first posted. Some of the responses are truly mind boggling.
sadly, mind boggling doesn't cover the level of ball licking and lunacy in this thread.....:no:
Pac should be foty not sergio. Pac fought guys 2 weightclass bigger than him while sergio only fought smaller guys.
Pac deserved it. Sergios claim is the basis of one punch against PW. That isnt good enough in anyones eyes.
Take a bow....you've both done an excellent job of embarrassing yourselves in this thread.
Pac should be foty not sergio. Pac fought guys 2 weightclass bigger than him while sergio only fought smaller guys.
Seriously STFU you cum guzzling whore!!!! Take your mouth off Manny's nuts long enough to let some oxygen get to your brain.
Firstly P Williams is the same size as Martinez (arguably bigger) and Kelly Pavlik is undoubtedly bigger!! Martinez dominated the number 1 ranked guys at 154 and 160 and one was also P4P.
Where were Clottey and Margarito ranked in there respective weight classes? The Margarito fight was an absolute joke, but you sir are the ultimate joke to have the temerity to even post such utter garbage on this site.
I hope you get hit by a bus you dumb cunt!!!!!!
This just highlights how high everyone is on MP right now. There is no way any objective fan can say he deserved this over Sergio Martinez.
Let's see:
Martinez: Dominated Pavlik to capture th MW title and crushed PWilliams (P4P # 3 on most peoples lists--->not mine) defending it with a KO of the year thrown in.
MP: Clottey and Antonio Margarito at a CW after a layoff.
Objectivbely speaking MP does not deserve the award, and the fact that ring awarded it to him citing this reasoning:
“We’re in the era of Manny Pacquiao, though. The world’s greatest fighter is so popular – particularly among his passionate countrymen – that we knew with certainty that he would be the runaway winner of the award. Facts be damned.”
...........is utterly fukking disgusting. "Facts be damned" ----> they are basically saying Sergio had the better year, but popularity dictates they give it to MP.
Rosenthal and the rest need to shoot themselves.
Pactards logic alert: Bigger = Better.
LOL i'm also loving how the 6'2 williams with an 81 inch reach,
and the 6'3 kelly pavlik with a 77.5 inch reach(who punches like he's got iron in his gloves,)
are somehow smaller than the 5'10 sergio martinez who's been a career jr mw and WW
Pac deserved it. Sergios claim is the basis of one punch against PW. That isnt good enough in anyones eyes.
So what was the Hatton punch then? Did Pac only get that FOTY award for that one punch over some guy that wasn't even really the number one guy in the division anymore?
****ing tool.
Sorry Sergio!!! you need more fans! At least you got the KO of the year!!
the real question becomes :
Would most pacquiao fans know the difference between a boxing glove and a leather mitten if manny didn't exist?
and then we must ask : will these folk still be fans of the sport after manny loses or retires?
one thing is certain, it will remove some clutter on these message boards
sergio martinez went from an argentine relocated in spain and fighting in obscurity to a star on the biggest american network covering boxing in the span of only a few years and fights
he took the MW championship (same belt that hopkins, hagler, monzon, robinson all carried) by destroying kelly pavlik's face with clean punches
and then knocked out Paul williams (top 5-10 p4p at the time) out COLD with one punch
if you think pacquiao is the fighter of the year you're not a fan of boxing
you're a pacquiao fan / a fan of yourself
Martinez deserves FOTY, how can anyone deny it. Anyone who disagrees are dumb-ass fanboys. And im not even much of a fan of Sergio's.
BTW TS really got burnt on this thread lol
It doesnt really matter what the whinners and haters in boxingscene has to say, the media and general public says otherwise, they should have realized that in Pac vs Margarito. They end up crying again

I'm a big pacquiao fan but sorry, I think 2011 belongs to Sergio Martinez.
Another example why pac fans are the worst fans in sports......90% of them dont know who sergio martinez is
is sad and embrassing really, but is true.
but the good thing is pac drawing million people to become boxing fan, and i believe some of them will fall in love with this respected sport and become more hardcore boxing fan. coz u know i see in other thread how UFC is dominating PPV, that just make me nervous.
i hope boxing will find soon another tyson, another de la hoya and ofcourse another pacman. :arabia:. that is my hope for this new year.
Pac should be foty not sergio. Pac fought guys 2 weightclass bigger than him while sergio only fought smaller guys.
Pactards logic alert: Bigger = Better.
I'm a big fan of Pac, but let's be real here... Sergio was the fighter of the year if you base it solely on ring performances and not other factors like USA Today and RING have apparently.
hmmm, if Pacquiao wins this that would be pretty disappointing. I just don't see how you can win fighter of the year by winning two decisions over two nobodies. One guy who fell off the map 2 years ago, and another guy who was banned from the sport and also hadn't fought in a couple years.
He was dominant but neither performance was particularly impressive. I just don't think he deserves it.
Khan and Martinez were more impressive than Pacquiao both in how they fought and how they won.
He was able to beat PW with one punch. But we dont know if he could beat Margarito like Pac did.
Pac deserves fighter of the year, because he is the best fighter.did you praise manny when he knocked out hatton?lol
didn't he get fighter of the year that year?lol
But Floyd dont want to fight Pac!! So the Mythical Title he got from Mosley become vacant. Now Pac & Mosley will fight for it Again!
Sergio deserves it But Pac has the Case!! Fans voted for Pac, Media might sway for him too. SErgio KO the guy he outweigh! Cheato who has a Ko win over SErgio has a 17 lbs advantage over Pac. So Pac feat was much better!wrong--manny doesn't want any parts of floyd and we can go back and forth with this issue all day, but at the end of the day, manny lied and is still lying--so has bob arum and freddy roach--they all lie but you're gullible it seems, so you're fedd into it--
floyd does want to fight manny and will fight manny--make no mistake about it--he's fighting manny and fukking him up, it's all but written--
SMH. Man I thought Flomos were bad, these Pactards are downright puppets man. Like the poster said before, this is just a FAN pole the ring and the writers will get together to determine the real fighter of the year. If you think that what Pac did was more impressive then Sergio then you're insane. I don't even need to bring up the Clottey fight, but the Margs and Pac fight was an outright disgrace to boxing. If fighting for a vacant title in a weight class which neither fighter has proved anything is impressive to you then you can have it. That fight was a total farce. Now I will say it was impressive in that Pac was able to mess up Marg's face, but honestly who didn't see that fight going exactly how it went?
