Against Freddy Hernandez...
I don’t really have much to add but I found it interesting that, as it related to Andre Berto’s purse of $910,000 for facing no-hoper Freddie Hernandez, what ended up being a very good night of boxing this past weekend at the Honda Center in Anaheim (sans Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., and the whole card taking away what Junior was supposed to receive, which I was told was $650,000), didn’t cost Top Rank that much. In fact, I’m told it cost a little over half of what HBO doled out to Berto/Haymon. - Steve Kim
Is a Berto fight really worth almost double what Soto-Antillon, let alone Donaire-Sidorenko, Garcia-Lontchi, and Wolak-Pinzon?
First Dawson's overpaid lame ass lost. Then Paul Williams. Now hopefully Berto will either step up his comp or he'll get the boot from the network. One thing I do have to say about Berto though, is he does score devastating KOs unlike Dawson does even if they are over bums. Williams shouldn't be criticized for his entertainment value unless you completely hate the guy but he was overpaid.
Yeah, but they're fucking retarded and you're retarded for using them as some sort of credible reference you fag.
Every time you call me a f@g, an angel gets her wings.
Are you telling me that I have not see eleventeen jillion Paclanders here and across the Interwebs saying that Mosley is the bigger draw?

Yeah Berto beat the **** out Freddy Hernandez. $100,000 for every punch landed. 9 punches total in 2min of action. He didnt even get hit barely. Easy money for Berto!
Thomas Damgaard.
I'm just saying.

agreed, mosley was never a big draw at all his career.
its weird if u ask me cuz he did have an exciting style people liked but he was never a big name like oscar and tito were
He never galvanized the African American community because he wasn't "hip-hop" in the way that Roy and Floyd are.
And he fights like a Mexican, rather than the 'flashy' style they seem to embrace.
generalization, i know... but there's a reason why cliches become cliches.
No he doesn't you joker, that's just Arum being a right cunt.
Everyone knows JMM is more marketable.
Especially given their history together.

I'm giving an example.
Marquez is in B2B FOTY's and is one of the more exciting fighters around...right? But when it comes to Pac's next fight, the 'competitive appeal' or 'excitement factor' goes out the window. And they will fight Shane b/c they think Shane brings more $.
But I at least respect that you admit that you don't apply your criteria consistently.

fu*k andre berto hes wack as hell
Anyone who compares him to the great gatti needs to get smacked across the face with a crowbar

What does he have to do with Top Rank?

And that is the selectivity that tweaks me.
So Marquez is in B2B fights of the year. What economic concessions is Top Rank making for that?
What does he have to do with Top Rank?
Gatti already had 2 fights of the year, and had been in mostly competitive fights. I don't care about the economics except for when one guy clearly doesn't deserve it.
Like berto or Mayweather jr.
Barrera was in FOTY's also. but at leasty those were high skill level.
And, BTW, MAB helped sell several PPV's that brought revenues to HBO.
Consider me a champion of equality.

It's funny how half the time, you guys justify fights on "economics" when it suits your argument or you like a certain fighter.
And then when you don't like a fighter, fights should be made on competitive appeal.

I enjoy how you cats threw sh!t against a wall, yet nobody was able to provide a single fact.
There are few (very few) people who have driven revenues and profits for TWI.
Manny, Oscar , Vargas, Tito, Floyd , etc. The guys who were essentially homegrown and transitioned to PPV stars.
That is how it works. You are essentially an expense until you start generating PPV sales and revenue for the affiliates. In the case of Gatti, he had exactly one PPV event - the fight with Floyd that sold about 370K.
SHO does a FAR superior job in putting on great fights economically.
Keep in mind how many incremental subscribers you would have to add (on a base of about 36 million) to pay for boxing.
...and the guys who watch boxing had bought HBO for the Sopranos anyway...so you can only add REAL incrementality.
all u asked me was how butts in seats can cause more return on investment ... and all im saying is that seeing a crowd into a fight will get the viewers at home more into a fight. therefore mroe likely to create a fan of our sport therefor continue to watch subscribe and buy ppv's
Do you seriously believe that people were subscribing to HBO for Gatti fights?
Absolutely, his fights had very high ratings. HBO doesn't do boxing for charity.
Boxing affects subscriber numbers for some customers (I include myself in this).
WTF is "roi" and wtf is this guy talking about?
You gonna sit here and pretend that this has anything to do with Berto being good for Hbo???
Gatti >> Berto.
You can't win this.

ROI is return on investment.
Ypu know, the thing that everybody in business is concerned with...or should be.
Don't get me wrong. I have no love for Berto. I just don't like the selectivity of picking out Berto when they have had the same issues w gatti/shane.
