let's face it, pwill has shiitty defense. his trainer is a crack head to not notice the glaring defensive deficiencies in pwill's game.
it's not an off night when you get caught with a big shot with your hands around your waste. it's called "inviting a spectacular KTFO" or "KO of the Year"
Is this the end of pwill? no. pwill can still improve his defense. however, defense doesn't mean fight like a slick black fighter. all he needs to do is keep his chin tucked and his guard up around his chin at all times and he should be fine.
nothing wrong with a 6 foot guy fighting like a 5 foot mexican. he just needs better defense.
it's possible to brawl offensively, but you gotta cultivate good habits.
yeah, pwill either needs more tricks up his sleeeve regardless.
I think he's conscious, but his body has shut down. his nervous system is all out of whack.
LoL, I don't know man, I really don't think he was conscious. If not for the video replay, Williams most likely has no recognition of the 2 round.
The problem with Paul is he is a 6 foot guy fighting like a 5 foot mexican.

His offense is his defense and usually does the trick,

but like others have mentioned, when your opponent has you figured out there's not much you can do. Especially since PDub doesn't change his style during fights.

Pullcounter, that is a telling photo of Paul. The lights are on but nobody's home!

This was going to happen eventually either way. Williams leaves himself too open, and he's too eager to trade anyway. I didn't think it would be that brutal, but you'd have to think Williams was going to get put out eventually if not just outboxed again.
yeah. you just can't fight with no defense at the elite level for so long.
The punches Quintana was landing on him in the first fight were big, clean, counter punches. Martinez was rocking his head back int eh first fight as well. You figure the more he moved up in weight the more vulnerable he'd become.
he's been taking those punches well, but s-mart really sat down on his punches in the rematch.
He only has one style. He's improved the style and added power slowly over fights, but he hasn't added much else.
cause his trainer sux.
I'd like to see him fight Angulo, a guy who matches his style quite nicely, just so long as his punch resistance isn't shot.
I think that'd be a FOTY type fight.
Angulo or Kirkland would be explosive.
The thing with Paul is everything is hooks and uppercuts up close. Those long arms of his give his opponents lots of room to work on the inside.
I don't think that's a huge problem, but he's gotta keep his defense tight tho and his chin tucked and his punches short. he can't be cocking his punches like he did against s-mart. also he can't be having his hands down by his waist.
If he could stay a foot extra back and straighten his punches a bit, it would make him so much harder to hit.
can't knock this. he doesn't control distance very well.
As it stands though if Paul hit harder at middleweight he would make more opponents play more defensive, but at middle right now they are going to be willing to bang with him.
true, but pwill gotta work with what he got and what he don't have is explosive bone crushing power. when his opponents want to bang, he's gotta be able to brawl defensively. sounds like an oxymoron, but duran and frazier did it, so can pwill if he refines his skills.
Maybe he should move down to welter again, if he can.
that is obviously the plan now... melt down to WW and beat up on midgets.

Williams hype is a product of having such physical advantages at 147 over everyone. He even made Margarito look small in the ring.
This is why Goosen wanted to move him back to 47' after he got exposed by Cintron.
He can't hang with anyone his own size that is decent. He's just not that good.
I gotta agree. Goosen and Haymon and pwill's trainer and handlers got spooked when S-mart knocked him down in the first fight. they decided they needed to get down to 147 fast cause his lack of defense would get him in trouble at 160 lbs.
I wouldn't hold my breath dude. He already lost 4 times and hasn't changed anything.
I don't understand the optimism about this guy at all.
cause he's with the same crappy trainer. they tried to get pwill to box and pick his spots against cintron, but that was a failure as cintron may have won all 3 rounds before he jumped out of the ring. after that happened, they got spooked again and decided it was best to stick with what got pwill where he is, volume punching.
a new trainer might yield better results.
His excuse after the first Martinez fight was that he wasn't prepared to fight a lefty.
Did he not learn anything from 2 fights with Quintana?
:lol1:
quintana = B to C+ level boxer
martinez = A level boxer
BUT... they should've worked on pwill's defense... it was horrible in both fights.
A guy with his length and reach advantage, he should be able to use his jab better.
yup. his jab should be his best weapon.
I don't think Paul can improve all that much. At this point of his career, he is what he is. A freakishly tall come forward volume puncher.
all he really needs is better defense... if khan can do it, then so can pwill.
It really is, he has tons of ability and attributes that give him such an advantage over opponents. If he can find a trainer to broaden his scope and skill set he could then have options then can adjust to different styles as opposed to just throwing 100 punches while hoping something good happens or he landed enough to win rounds.
nothing wrong with throwing 100 punches a round. he just gotta tuck in that chin and keep his hands in position to defend.

This was like Roy Jones, all over again !!!!
You act like he's a prospect. He's an established pro deep in his career.

Nothing's gonna change, he is what he is!
Damn, i Had Serg layin a ass-whoopin on Pwill, but that **** was amazing!!!
Who is to say he can't learn something new, like I said there are plenty of simple mistakes he can fix but it is really up to him whether he looks at this like he just got caught or did he get caught because of the flaws in his game.
I wouldn't hold my breath dude. He already lost 4 times and hasn't changed anything.

There is plenty of room for improvement, just basic stuff that he does wrong.

I've heard many suggest Paul to stay behind the jab, this in my opinion just wouldn't work for Paul. I can't really explain what needs to be done with Paul since his style is unique and very different. Paul can't fight cautiously, it's not in his genes... I don't really know what Paul has to do other than tighten his defense.
Paul = One of the strangest fighters.
There is plenty of room for improvement, just basic stuff that he does wrong.
it's amazing how far he's gotten with such flaws in basic stuff. he's a freak of nature.
More than bad defense he has bad technique. When Martinez caught Williams, his right hand was down by his waist. That is something that should be fixed in the gym.
usually bad defense is a sign of bad technique.
His trainer should be fired.
completely agree.
Add to that Williams constantly fights the wrong fight. Face first aggression. It was bound to catch up to him sooner or later.
pwill can keep on fighting this style, but he needs to keep his chin tucked and his guard up. it wouldn't hurt him to punch straighter either.
Like Williams camp had the brilliant idea to walk in with hands down against a sharp counter puncher.
walking in with your hands down against any style isn't a great idea.
lol is McGirt his trainer?
mcgirt would've worked on pwill's defense. this guy hasn't improved pwill at all.
I agree, he can IMPROVE his defense but the man fights instinctively through an offensive approach.
It's possible to be offensive and defensive at the same time. I don't want him to change as a fighter. I like his aggression and his warrior mentality. what he needs tho is the cultivate good defensive habits that will make him a more dangerous boxer. for starters... when throwing the left hook, keep you chin tucked and your right hand glued to your chin.
I think once he gets hit flush he would only naturally revert back to his “face-first” style of fighting only to be caught again ala Sergio.
well, that's why you train hard in the gym.
Combine this with the fact Paul doesn’t utilize his height/reach advantage and fights at the level (height wise) as his foes….
yep. he can keep the punch output, but he needs to fight from a longer distance and with straighter punches. he can bang with his opponents inside, but he's gotta keep his guard up, his chin tucked, and his punches short.
it's not over for pwill, but he needs a real trainer.
