Well not 100% of the press, but pretty much the majority. It was NOT William's fault he was regarded by some as the second coming of Tommy Hearns, but with a killer chin. It was the boxing press. The same ones that built up the Chad Dawson hype-train.
Some of you out there hate on Williams (I did, at some point, too) but now that has been ejected from the hype-train, the same guys that built up this hypejob will be working hard at bringing you the next, soon-to-be-exposed, American network darling.
My respect to Paul, even if he b*tches now and then. He came to fight, and got iced. But he damn came to fight.
If Pwill fights behind the jab like Klitchko he would've beat Martinez easy. He wanted to put on a show and wasnt thinking about defense.
Don't know about that. Wlad has a lot of strength, in addition to leverage. Don't know if Paul has that kind of strength in his weight class. Doesn't look like it, IMHO.
Yep. I am giving him a pass on his outlandish comments. He's a kid, not very mature, I might add, without much education who has thrown out there into the limelight to be worshipped. He can't even maintain a straight face when people worship him... he starts to smile! We can agree to disagree there.
Again we will agree to disagree. He is immature and seems to have the mind of a child yes but is a grown man at 29 or 30 years old. Not an excuse.
Guys like Pacquiao, Martinez, Klitschko's (in Europe) recieve just as much praise and don't have that type of arrogance. Seems like you're giving him a pass when he doesn't deserve one in my eyes. He is how he is and is accountable for it.

I gave the 1st round to Martinez. Williams landed more but I gave it based on clean and effective punching.
Martinez landed some real hard lefts and towards the end of the 1st looked like he stunned Paul against the ropes with two flush shots. Did some nice body work too. Harold gave it to Sergio as did i, Manny is blind and bias when it comes to Williams.
I wont argue with you there. I watched another stream, and when I saw the HBO broadcast I was like "Are these guys kidding??"
Manny Steward "Williams was fighting the perfect fight, doing everything right. Then just one punch out of nowhere changed the whole outcome"
Are they even watching the thing? Williams lost every minute of that fight.

I like Williams. He comes to fight. But come on. He's got the commentators, journalists, press in general in his pocket. The HBO commentating team was collectively muted when he lost.

I agree with you, but damn it should be very, very difficult to have the world compare you with Hearns, saying you are the greatest mutant thing to come into boxing since who knows what, and not getting your ego boosted.
Williams is good. Needs Steward. Has stamina, chin. Has HEART. He can be great but needs to stop believing the press calling him P4P. He is, still, a work in progress.

I understand what you're saying but it just isn't true in my mind. He bought into and preached that hype as much as any media. Yelling about guys avoiding him while he was doing the same thing to other fighters.

They were behind him even before the championships.
They shugged off the 12 round schooling he got from 2nd rate Quintana like it never happened because he got KTFOed in one round in the rematch.
They announce his "victory" over Cintrón like it was real. I had nut-case Cintrón ahead in that match.
Quintana schools him for 12 rounds. Does Quintana make the P4P list? Hell no! But Williams, the "schooled on counterpunching" kid, does.

Margarito rematch?
One thing I have noticed on this board is that a fighter who is avoided becomes better than he really is. We have seen this with Caballero and Maidana as well.
He's a three-time world champion, why shouldn't the American press be behind him? I like him, but Sergio's been my favorite active boxer since I joined boxingscene and just had to root against Paul.
Maybe the first Martinez fight took something out of him. Or maybe he just doesn't belong above 154 or even 147.
He should rematch Kermit Cintron and see how well he does.
He's got nothing to be ashamed of, I'm sure he'll be back.

Williams under Steward would be a different fighter. Steward can work miracles with tall fighters. See HEARNS and WLAD.
I agree,if I had the chance to train with someone that would be steward that guy has trained the best he knows everything about boxing.
Few weeks ago in an interview he said when lenox fought he got rocked in round one he said when he came back to the corner he pressed something behind his head which he learned from the japanese to clear his head, and I youtubed that fight and you can see that he's putting pressure behind lenox's head..only a good coach would know tricks like that.

well he got knocked out badly but common it can happen to anyone,it doesn't mean that sergio is a better fighter, its 1-1,i would love to see a 3rd fight.Williams is an idiot he fought like a midget is supposed to fight, every amateur couch would tell him to throw them bombs from the distance..he went in like a fat kid on a cake.
