While watching Manny Pacquiao dominate Antonio Margarito during Saturday night's HBO pay per view televised clash at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium, many African American boxers and fight fans wondered when they would see the Filipino super star challenge Floyd Mayweather "or any other top notch black fighter."
At least, that's what one of boxing's elder statesmen, Bernard Hopkins, believes.
"Maybe I'm biased because I'm black, but I think that this is what is said at people's homes and around the dinner table among black boxing fans and fighters. Most of them won't say it because they're not being real and they don't have the balls to say it," said Hopkins, a 45-year-old future Hall of Famer and a multi-division champion.
"But I do think that a fighter like like the Ray Leonards or anyone like that would be beat by a guy if they come with their game," said Hopkins. "Listen, this ain't a racial thing, but then again, maybe it is. But the style that is embedded in most of us black fighters, that style could be a problem to any other style of fighting."
Slick boxing is the essence of the sweet science. And I suppose that's the style the majority of black fighters tend to have. So if Hopkins was saying the SLICK boxer style that black people use could beat Pac than I could agree. Or if he's saying the slick boxer style combined with the natural athleticism of black people would beat Pac. That's certainly true. If u try not to over think it, it can make sense. He did put it in an ignorant way by not emphasizing the specific part of being black, but we r talking about a guy who's been in jail. How classy did u expect him to be?
The only black fighter worth anything won't fight him. Who else is he suppose to fight? Bradley or Alexander would be a welcomed fight. But they need to fight each other first.
Hopefully its Bradley, I can't stand listening to Alexander to speak, they country retard should never have a mic in front of him ever again.
I like Hopkins but this is just ridiculous
(black fighters Pacquiao could fight)
Zab Judah isn't slick
Paul Williams isn't slick
Bradley/Devon aren't slick
Berto isn't slick
Mosley isn't slick
So Bernard, who is claiming to be "real", should just come out and say what he really thinks and that he wants Pac to fight a black guy....
and where is a Leonard type fighter today besides Floyd Pac could fight?
Bhop must be having dinner with MIC.
Hey ignore the grumblings of the boxing world if you want, but Hopkins is right when he says many don't have the balls to say It. Well more African Americans are growing the balls to say it cause once you start comparing Pac to Ali and SRL, you are inviting criticism from Black fans. Like I said before Pac fight a Black American or retire. Only by beating Mayweather can you put Pac on Ali and SRL's level.
i think b-hop has a point. although he might've added a little uncalled for zeal. I think he was trying to quell the arguments on two different points. A) the fact that they will not match manny with a "boxer" (consequently, those that boxed him clearly showed why). and also that out of all races in boxing, black fighters (champions especially) get the most heat, or rather don't get as much due as their counterparts. think about black champions. so called "boxing" champions especially.
floyd-obviously hated, even though he's a great boxer.
roy jjr.- hated on big time, even when he cleared his division, and he was a great boxer
Hopkins-hated on terribly his whole career. never truly accepted. not necessarily a boxer.
Leonard-hated on big time while he was a champion. scared, conceited, etc...boxer
Ali - people want to remember him as america's greatest fighter, but while he was boxing he was hated by the bulk of america (you know who you are).
We could build a list a thousand miles long of all the fights that should've been made for every boxer in boxing.
Some are too young to remember the way these guys were treated while they were champions. So, does hopkins have a point? definitely when it comes to pac having not faced a "boxer". The other question of whether black boxers are shunned......sad to say, he may.
Slickness aside. There are only a few black fighters out there that could hold Pac's jockstrap except for Floyd and in a lesser degree, Bradley, Berto, and Paul Williams. Mosley is old and shot so forget him already.
I think Goldenboy is desperate for that big money fight. Who else do they have except for Mosley and/or Floyd. Floyd doesn't even consider them as his promoter.
This is the reason why Dela Hoya is probably even thinking of fighting again.
i don't like threads involving race/nationality.
let's talk about something else.
heat killing the suns.
suns beat lakers the other week.
heat >>>>> lakers
As much as I'm anti-LA I wouldn't mind if Kobe and them win it again IF they beat Miami and LeBron's ass...
Clottey is too black.
Pac need to fight Pwill Black or Maynever Black before the black community shut the ruck up with this Slick African American Boxer Superiority Complex.
I do agree with this however Mexicans do the same thing with their heart/pride die in the ring non-sense
black fans are too busy being gangsta and having big dicks to worry about which fighter they like or not.
That photo of Mayweather with all that money stored up is whats wrong with this country and with Mayweather. His dumbass doesnt appreciate all the american soldiers that died for him so he can train freely in the gym without worrying about a plane flying into it. Im biased because im in the Army but this country is too damn worried about money and props and all other kinds of **** that doesnt matter in the long run. Anyone that gets rich, especially self-made rich folks, I give all the credit in the world because thats the American dream, but people take that **** too seriously, especially Mayweather. I bet a couple of Afghanis or Iraqis shooting a AK-47 at his ass would humble him with a quickness. He would probably just throw hundred dollar bills at them and run.
I'm black and it has nothing to do with race...at least to me...
I guess Joshua Clottey isn't black enough...
Slick fighters don't come from one race...ask Camacho...
Makes more sense to say you would like to see Pac fight a slick fighter...
So if Pac beats Paul Williams, he's cool? Cuz Paul Williams is from the states and he sure as hell aint slick...
I agree with this. We all know Hopkins has these kinds of comments. He has allot of balls to say stuff even if it doesn't make much sense. People who think Hopkins is a racist SOB should be put in jail and be RACE SORTED 5 minutes into it and have to accept it SO THEY SURVIVE, then come say Hopkins is a racist.
