To be the real champ do you need to beat Floyd Mayweather?
I was thinking about this in relation to another thread, but there really is not lineal champ at 147 right now since Floyd retired leaving his belt but Floyd never lost his belt in the ring so he still has some claim so if he is out there with no loses and competeing in that class.
So if you want to be the real recognized champ to all at 147 do you need to see Floyd Mayweather. There really is no right or wrong and I really don't care either way but the is more of a philosophical questions abotu how people look at champions (not titlests champions).
Floyd is not #1,2,3 or anything he shouldn't even be ranked on any list until he starts fighting again
He's an inactive fighter who is too scared to fight anyone that can beat him, that doesn't equate to lineal champion status.
As far as I'm concerned he's not a ranked fighter because he doesn't fight and won't fight and should just retire
Actually your thread is one of the reasons boxing is a frustrating sport.
It reminds of when Vitali held the WBC belts hostage because of injuries then got awarded Champion emeritus.
Wouldn't it be cool for other sports to choose when they play for a championship, rather than having to actually defend it at a certain date and time.
Nah, that would be awful.
In boxing, it seems like fighters have the luxury (if making enough money) of fighting once a year or so, and not being stripped though they seem to go after new champs much more aggressively nowadays but I think that's more about sanctioning fees than it is about defending belts in a timely manner,
It also doesn't help that the belts don't mean as much.
I know this is the state of affairs but I don't have to like it.
It has always been like that though Dempsey held the belt hostage and that was 100 years agao almost.
That is just boxing, which does have the most frusterating championship structure this side of college football.
That is part of the reason i don't care about all the tiltes being out there because they get a lot more guys involved in the top end of the sport as opposed to back in the day when one man could freeze up one weightclass for a long time and not punk ass wieght classes 15 pound weight classes. That would have been sickening if you were Charlie Burley or any of the uncrowned fighters of yester year.
Still though that is part of the reason the champion is special because taking their crown is never an easy task and they will do everything to keep it (fair and unfair) but that does make taking the championship by force a special event.
I don't know how to make boxing better other than make it more worthwhile for the best to be fighting the best, because in no other sport is choice a much a part of it is in boxing but I think I would rather have it as it is currently with the exception that I wish there would be more fights overall
Lennox wouldn't have a claim that is the point.
He never got beat, so the guy who came after him could never really be the champ since the old champ never ogt his crown lifted.
It has been a long time for Lennox but if he came back tomorrow people would want to see him fight Wlad solely on the fact that Lennox was the man before him.
You can eventually become the man without destroying the old champ if the old champ never comes back a la Lennox but that **** takes time and even now people yearn for Lennox to come back and challenge Wlad and Vitali soley because who else is out there for them to see (even if the division was popping I think people would want that).
I agree you have to beat Pac.
We don't have to get in to why you live in the gay part of Miami, but can you elaborate on why Manny is the man to beat at 147?
Well even if Wlad said. It wouldn't take away the fact that he is the real/lineal current HW champ.
While Lennox would be a contender.
It just wont.
A true king would never let another man have a claim on his throne like that.
Lennox in the minds of many is still a king, now Wlad is considered the current king.
If Lennox comes back and Wlad is like nah I don't want to fight him he is washed up how would people react? He would most likely be washed up but that is not how people would react to the situation.

Well if he comesback and shows that he is not out of shape and still has it. Of course people would call to see him fight the real/lineal champ.
However, that doesn't take away the fact that one Lennox is NOT the current lineal/real champ. And, that Wlad is the current lineal/real champ. The man of the division.
If Lennox wanted that title he would have to beat Wlad just like Floyd did to Shane.

That is the question at hand though.
If Lennox came out of retirement, would people not be calling for him to see the current champ and vice versa? Would that not help out the current champs situation.
It is like Johnson-Jefferies, just because someone stops fighting doesn't mean people forget about them and if someone walks away without getting beat there is always someone that will consider that.
If you don't behead the king the king will never die in the minds of some people.

but being the man doesn't necessarily mean you are the best as zsolt erdei and carlos baldomir taught us. it's just an invisible title and nothing more.
i kno baldo catches a lot of flack but give the guy a little respect. he shocked the the (albeit weak) ww division and the boxing world when he beat zab and he was still a top 10 ww at the time. even a journeyman deserves his 5mins in the spotlight.
But, he won't automatically be the lineal/real champ either. It doesn't matter if he lost it or not cuz he gave it up.
A better example, Wlad is the lineal/real HW champ. Lennox Lewis can not come out of retirement and be called the lineal/real HW champ cuz he didn't lose his title, he retired it. If he wants that title he would have to beat the current lineal/real champ in Wlad. Only way he gets it.

Titles don't make the men, men make the titles.
oh ok, got u...so who became lineal champ when floyd retired??? cotto??
No one did, or else Floyd would have had another opponent to seek out. Some people say Mosley because Cotto and Margarito squared off for the number 1 spot then Margarito got smashed by Mosley.
That never did it for me though.
Nah... Cotto was ranked #1 but not lineal champ.
The lineal title was vacant.
Margarito-Shane filled that vacancy.
Marg was ranked #1, Shane #3, Marg already had a win over the #2 ranked Cotto. So the that made the #1 vs #3 fill the vacancy since #1 was just coming off a win over #2.
Shane was won the vacant lineal title which he lost to Floyd.
Floyd is the man in the division right now, no matter what anybody else says.

If Calzaghe comes back at 168 he still hasn't lost his championship.
That is Floyd situation minus two comeback fights.
This thread was always theoretical to begin with.

No, not at all actually. Well not the lineal/real championship anyways.
And, no for the last paragraph it doesn't work that way. However, the reason why nobody would be consider the lineal/real champ at 168. Is because, there isn't any.
If Calzaghe comes back at 168 he still hasn't lost his championship.
