From the Ruelas fight up until his last fight, I never missed 1. My whole family loved Oscar. Prime Oscar was a beast, nothing but repect for the man, he fought everyone! Most posters in here don't know sh*t about Oscar so they bash him because of his fights vs Floyd and Manny...that Oscar was not even half of half of half what prime Oscar was...either way Did you get to witness a prime DLH? If so what do yoy have to say?
Ask Jesse James Leija how good Oscar was when they fought, his lightweight self was probably not his physical prime but it was the best he ever was...who could touch him at lightweight?
Oscar obviously a sure fire Hall of Famer came up short with regards to referring to him as a member of truly all time great fighters. He tired against Felix, struggled against a somewhat faded Sweat Pea and fought in spurts against Quartey. He came out on the sort end of the stick against Sugar Shane and he just found ways to lose big fights late whereas someone like Ray Leonard found ways to win big fights late. (Not a knock to come up short to a guy like Leonard)
I think part of it had to do with Oscar not being 100% committed to the game (Women, weight gain in between fights etc.) and who could blame him with the money and fame he was experiencing which was second to none in the sport.
Oscar is on of the best lightweights I ever witnessed and I loved the guy-I just cant help to think that he had more in him and I think he would be the first to shake his head and say YES I probably had more in me.
A lot of boxing newbs don't realize how great he was in his prime.

too bad he didn't make it to "all time greatness."
well that is up to you but i will say he is a greater fighter than floyd mayweather jr. he fought and beat much better competition than floyd. that makes him better to me. he lost more than floyd but he also took more risks than floyd. if he cherry picked as hard as mayweather he would have been unbeaten into his 30's. let's say he had a good run at 135 moved up to beat chavez then fought a bunch of unworthy fighters while avoiding all the best fighters for nearly ten years. then he would have a resume similar to floyd's and maybe then you would consider him an all time great.
Yes yes Sturm yes. Felix Sturm. I always forget his name.
And I cannot forget the women behind Oscar. The female population was overwhelmed with Oscar. My aunts still are.
It amazes me how many women still follow this dude even after retirement...

I seen that Oscar and he was very good. I was just disapointed when he elected to box Trinidad instead of fight with him. He didn't dance around, move away, and box like that until he fought Trinidad. I was surprised and even more when he started running from him. He's had very good fights, though, and he was a man and never ducked anyone. I was surprised he fought Hopkins. I knew he would get knocked out and was surprised he did so good in the early rounds. All and all he was a very good fighter but I wouldn't call him great.
Yeah, his name is Felix Sturm and that was the worst shape I have ever seen a prime Oscar in that fight.

Leija was not a bum. Molina was not a bum. Ruelas was not a bum. Rivera was not a bum (in fact I think he beat Pernell in the first fight). González was not a bum (drew with Chávez!).
Much better opposition than most of today's "stars" in that period of his career.
He definetely was a beast in his prime. From the business aspect of boxing, he is obviously well recognized, skills wise, I think he is underrated. He fought everybody, win or lose. Sad to say, but if he had padded his record, he would be very highly regarded among the more recent ATG's IMO.
Yes he fought everybody, but he fought them at his carefully chosen time. The only 2 guys that his "Brains Trust" erred on were Quartey and Mosley. With Quartey it was a 50-50 fight aand with Mosley he was soundly beaten. However, Oscar at his oeak was a really good top fighter and I always liked to watch him. he was resourceful and had a good boxing brain.
However he always gassed in the second half of a fight\, and was very weak in the body.
Oscar was great. Everybody always doubted him. Then he dismantled Ruelas, Chávez, and the epic Quartey fight. It all started going rocky from the marathon he ran against Trinidad. Then came the German guy whose name I always forgot, who really beat DLH.
But prime DLH was great. Oh the beating he put on Maromero Páez.

where were all the baldomir's and hattons when oscar was in his prime. he didn't get the easy path to "all time greatness" that some have taken.
too bad he didn't make it to "all time greatness."

yep, i appreciate what oscar did. he consistently fought the best, but he also lost the majority of those big fights, whether he got the decision or not.
Great boxer, he moved beautifully, had one of the greatest jabs, really good combination puncher, whats not to like? One of my favorite fighters to watch.
He was the perfect example of what you want the face of boxing, which Oscar was in his prime, to be. He was in his prime when I was a kid and into my teens, so I didn't quite have the appreciation and understanding for the sport I do now, but I saw nearly all his big fights. He could box, he threw vicious combos, and had some freakish size especially at 140.
He seems to have been missing that vital something to take himself to the indisputably ATG level, but if you don't think a prime Oscar at 140 and 147 gives most fighters at those weights something to worry about, you clearly weren't paying enough attention.

I agree.....
