He knows that Margarito isn't gonna go into a shell and isn't gonna fold mentally.
He knows that Margario is gonna PUNCH WITH Manny Pacquiao.
He knows that Pacquiao isn't gonna have the same speed at 149, the kind of speed that allows him to hurt guys because they don't see the punches coming.
He knows that 10 oz gloves are going to take away from Pacquiao's speed and power.
He knows that Margarito is gonna be greatly conditioned and will most likely rehydrate up to 167+++.
He also knows that Margarito is very determined and has ALOT to prove.
This is exactly why they want to weaken him. I don't give a shit about "Margarito isn't gonna be drained at 149", those 5...
5 extra pounds would have made a HUGE difference. I'm really sick of that PED infested midget.
Cotto was Pac's biggest risk and he got destroyed
Not really. Cotto was tailor made for Pacquiao. Pacquiao is basically a faster Margarito minus the chin and plus footwork.
Basically Cotto never stood a chance against Pacquiao period. Even 147, it would have been the same result. If Cotto couldn't withstand slow unrelentlessness, then how is he gonna withstand fast unrelentlessness?
Cotto wasn't a big risk. Margarito isn't that big of a risk either. Margarito is slow. A risk for Pacquiao is someone equal with speed or footwork and fights smart ,not using their chin for defense.
I remember reading that back in the day and in a nutshell, before the 24 rehydration rule, fighters where protected from guys blowing up 16-20lb after a weigh in.
For example if this fight was held back in the day, both Manny and Tony would have to weigh under 154 the day of the fight. What that means is Margarito would more than likely be 154-158 on fight night. With the 24 rehydration thing we have now, even with the catchweight, Margarito has a day to rehydrate, meaning he could show up in the mid 160's
There was no need for catchweights back in the day for the reasons I mentioned above. The whole point of catchweights is to prevent huge disparities in weights on fight night.....something same day weigh-ins prevented in the first place.
There have always been catchweights. Always. Catchweights are not a byproduct of day before weigh-ins. They just get day before weigh-ins as a newer rationale for them. They were less common is some eras than others. This is an era where they are becoming common in big fights and only in targeted circumstance.
He was getting rounds in to shake off the rust pendejito. He won every round and put the guy down int he first round and won EASILY.
Callate mamon.
Honestly Jack he did exactly what a fighter with a long layoff is suppose to do. Don't press on the gass and gets some rounds end. I can't see why this is even debatable.
With that said, I do feel Garcia is working on adding some new wrinkles in his game and they were experimenting with some stuff against an inferior opponent. Kinda like Nonito switching to southpaw against Hernan Marquez in there recent fight.
yeah, but why would he be working on fighting like Paulie Malignaggi? Just doesn't make sense to me.
It is a tough transition away from plaster hand wraps~
Him and his trainer said they wanted to work on the stuff they were doing in camp since it was their first fight together.

I hope you're right. I just don't understand why he couldn't get rounds in doing what he always does.

Margarito is monster but he has the style that Pacquiao likes.
No one will stand toe to toe against Pacquiao and beat him.
Not to mention, Pac kills anyone that walks straight to him...

and Margarito at his best did that. This new version didn't. The bum He chose for his comeback was the one chasing him by the last round.
I just don't think Margarito has that card anymore.

So he doesn't have to come in over 147 to fight for the belt.
Wth.....
Jesus Christ.....lol @ The bullsh1t
I'm not sure about that as I'm only talking Willie Swindlers word for that.
I know it was like that back in the day, but I'm not sure how that works now n days.
You don't all of a sudden recover because of rehydrating man, Quintana looked pathetic. I understand what the writer is saying, but I dont agree with him there.
I'm not saying that either. What I'm saying is having 24 hours will allow your body to recover, replenish itself, and increase the chances of you putting weight back on as compared to draining yourself and having to fight in that shape later on that day.
Catchweights are put in affect to prevent a guy from ballooning up large amounts in 24 hours.
If there was same day weight in...then that wouldn't happen....making catchweights a moot point.
Not to start a debate but do you honestly think Clottey would have put on 23lbs against corrales if there was a same day weigh in?
Actually that last point co-signs what he was saying. Let's say Quintana had to fight Berto later that day after looking like that at the weigh in.
The rehydration rule helps fighters out a lot and even to the point some use it to there advantage.
If we still had same day weigh in's....catchweights would rarely, if ever, happen in boxing.

Sorry dude, but I don't agree with that. Just because Cotto, Margarito or whoever rehydrates a certain amount does not take away from the hard work that is put into making weight. Look at Quintana, he looked drained at the weigh in for Berto, then he rehydrated to who knows how much and still looked very weak against Berto.

cliff was the one that gave me the answer on why catchweights were made. then he tried to play doctor that contradicted his answer.
boxing writers playing catcweight research doctors. unbelievable. cliff is my favorite writer on the scene but i just had to call him out on that.

Read the whole thread & the reason why catchweights were made in the first place. Cliff rold posted on it & tried to play physician & i called out his ass on it.
OK I remember that thread. A personal favorite of mines. I agree with you 100% but I was always curious about fighting for a title and coming in under the weight limit.

Yeah but we're gonna get a different Margarito in my opinion.
In the bold, thats always been the case with Margarito. The problem lies with Margarito constantly coming foward and throwing. Thats when that mental exhaustion kicks in and your left wondering how your gonna get this man (Margarito) off you, then your stamina is zapped. You start to lose concentration and before you know it he's slowly breaking you down.
