They probably took allot of punishment during sparring, your sparring partner trains everyday with you , he knows your style. So sparring partners usually hit you more then your opponent
This here^^^^^^, Boxers get hit a lot in sparring too, Thats why its nice to fight get your money and leave with a clear health. No need to take too much punishment, I saw a Meidrick Taylor interview the other day and the guy could hard speak..Unbelievable.
Toney's problems really come from his lack of conditioning in fights which would of had a negative impact on his reflexes and the fact that he had so many fights. 70 fights is a lot of fights to have.
Aww yea no doubt..
even with the shoulder roll toney still got hit in his head alot wheter it was behind the head or anywhere he didnt protect his head with his shoulder as good as Floyd does..that my opinion on toney..

THe simple Answer is they dont have great Defense. Pernell cared more about Flash than function, and would just randomly bob and weave, sometimes even into punches. He was not better than Floyd.

Carl Froch takes lots of shots and speaks the queens English.

Im sure they have spoken like that there entire careers. More than just boxing can give you slurred speech. Its like saying why are Oscar De La Hoya and the late Arturo Gatti so well spoken even though they have taken some decent beatings
gatti definately talk different early in his career then later. you have to go listen to him.
and pernell and james talk different then they used to.

It won't be like that in 10-15 years time if he keeps fighting with his hands down. The reason that Toney and Whitaker had bad speech is because they both stuck around for longer than they shouldve done. Toney took alot of punishment in his losses to Samuel Peter and Whitaker took alot of punishment in his loss to Trinidad. I think Pernell's condition has worsened due to his heavy drug abuse in the years since he retired. But I think what he took was more bad for him because he was a small guy who could proberbly have made 130. Instead he was fighting at 135, 140, 147 and even 154. Against much bigger opponents. It's the same with James Toney.
But I do think that the defensive skills of both fighters were slightly overrated. They both got hit alot towards the end of their careers and even in their prime, they had tough fights. Your defence can be great but when your fighting elite competition, they are still going to land. Dave Tiberi landed over 400 punches against Toney in their fight according to compubox. And Pernell had close fights with Buddy McGirt, Wilfredo Rivera and Diosbelys Hurtado so they must have hit him a few times.
I mean Toney while being a defensive great also had over 80 fights plus all the sparring and so on and so forth. So I mean that just takes a toll no matter how great the defense

A one punch knockout is less worse then getting punched over and over again for 12 rounds
becaue tommy hearns slurs really badly.
and even young guys like litzau slurs badly.

what does more damage, a bad knockout or a lot of medium punches?
tommy hearns took a couple bad knockouts and he slurs bad. pernell and toney took some medium punches but not that many.
in some fights pernell almost did not get hit.
