Pretty disgusting night
Everything from the UFC announcers labeling Toney as "one of the best boxers ever"
To them billing that co main event as Boxing VS MMA
To the fans booing a boxer and shouting "UFC UFC UFC"
and of coarse there's Toney for talking so much trash and humiliating himself along with boxing for some cash and attention...dude is a sell out, I'm glad I was never a fan
but props to Dana and his company UFC, can't hate on their hustle and the way they market and spin things....and for Couture of coarse for doing what he had to do
Sorry bub, but Randy admitted defeat before stepping into the ring by building his gameplan around avoiding a stand up fight. He admitted he was TOO AFRAID to stand toe-to-toe with Toney. I don't care what your standards are, but according to my standards that is a coward. If you admit defeat in a toe-to-toe battle before it even happens then you are a coward.
I don't mind fighters who lose on their feet or take a beating on their feet like Marcus Davis did. He had heart and showed it. Or like Calderon did last night. They were both man enough to stand their ground and test themselves. All Couture did was wrestle a boxer (with no wrestling background) to the floor, and once he knew he was in the safe, acted like a big tough guy reigning down blows. What a little b****.
They had a fight and Randy won easily, accept the facts, Toney could not keep Randy from taking him down, if he could have kept the fight standing different outcome no doubt, but he could not so he lost the fight.durrr
Fact is, this is James Toney we're speaking about. A former Middleweight boxer who has had a career of not being in shape, old, doesn't like to move much and a lack of respect.
I don't believe he trained seriously for this fight for one. And two, Boxers just aren't used to dealing with multiple martial arts. Boxing is A martial art. Kickboxing is A martial art. Wrestling is A martial art. Karate is A martial art.
However take ANYONE from just one of those martial arts and put him in against a trained, professional MIXED martial artist, you may get the same result. Someone who is into Karate may not know how to handle a strong wrestler who knows how to mount, move and submit.
It was unfortunate to see this as a boxing fan mainly because Toney is such a decorated boxer. Heavyweight boxers, long ago, were looked at as the "Toughest Man On The Planet". And casual fans or MMA fans believe that Toney was like prime, top, Heavyweight boxer.
I am not saying a prime Foreman, Tyson, Marciano, Wladmir, Holyfield, etc wouldn't suffer the same result in 100% MMA rules. Though I do believe just about any HW other than Toney might have performed better as Toney is old and not in shape (and may not have even tried to train correctly).
You just don't take a decorated Marathon "Runner" into an Iron Man Triathlon (Running, Biking & Swimming) and expect them to do great. He's a great runner, but biking and swimming are two completely different animals.
The concept of MMA is bigger than Dana White. I wouldn't focus on how much money the President of the UFC made from it, who is always going to make a lot of money from it.
And secondly, he made a moron out of MMA fans who he persuaded to buy the PPV who otherwise wouldn't. Very few boxing fans who actually know anything about boxing sure didn't fall for that crap and actually buy it thinking it would be competitive. Just read the posts on here from before the fight. Many said it would be a straightforward, very early, Couture win.
The morons are those who bought it to see an old fat man tap out at the start of the first round, who, in the vast majority of cases, won't be people who know their boxing.
A lot of Boxing fans buy UFC PPVs, simply because they can distiguinsh one from the other and not always have to compare the two.
Toney vs Couture wasn't even the Main Event, but regardless of what both Boxing and MMA fans thought, everyone talked about it, just like how many of us hated JMM vs Floyd...but we all still talked about it whether negative or positive. Promoters either way don't care, and that goes for Boxing as well (if it wasn't evident enough already).
LOL it's so hilarious that people are ****ting on Couture when the dude was all class through the entire build up of the fight and after the fight. Toney CHOSE to go to the UFC...why??? Cause he wanted a check Boxing promoters wouldn't give him. Not that I'm being racist towards Toney (I'm Jamaican / Italian myself), but Toney was simply coonin for a check, plain and simple. Anyone who thought Toney was gonna simply KO Couture or who are now ****ting on Couture because he took Toney down obviously still don't realize Boxing and MMA are TWO DIFFERENT SPORTS and both have two different means of preparation.
On the flip side, many of the rabid Boxing fans who despise MMA would be clowning any MMA fighter who lost to a Boxer in a Boxing match. Call a spade a spade.
...now back to Boxing :fing02:
Yeah UFC really lost there! Dana White is a real moron for making $$$ from all the PPV buys that this event generated. What a bunch of morons!

Actually, I became a big fan of Couture that night. He handled himself with class and showed a lot of respect for Toney.
Leading up to the fight he said the same thing over and over and that is that he respects boxing as a great fighting art and that he would never stand a chance in a boxing ring.
Toney was the one running his mouth and you guys are missing the bigger picture in all of this. Couture said it after the fight, he said hopefully this will bring more lagit boxers to MMA and make the sport even better.
Could you imagine someone with the wrestling skills of Couture AND the boxing skills of a James Toney?
It's called evolution of a sport and that's what Couture and Dana were looking for, they weren't looking to humiliate boxing in any way. Now the UFC crowd is another story but you get drunken idiots everywhere you go.

Well...your post is being laughed at all over Sherdog. So theres another mockery unfortunately.
UFC was the huge loser.
Firstly, Toney managed to steal a pay day from UFC by coming in with a beer gut and doing nothing.
Boxing 1-0 UFC
Secondly, a boxer was willing to take on a UFC legend who is still in shape at his own game. A UFC fighter has not, and will not, enter boxing and fight a comparable opponent; i.e. someone who is considered a legend and in shape, such as Hopkins.
Boxing 2-0 UFC

Boxing 2-0 UFCBoxing definitely came out on top. You really know what you're talking about!!!!

Your IQ is nonexistant if you think Couture beats Toney in a BOXING MATCH. He even said himself he would get knocked out in the first round.
It amazes me how unbelievably stupid people are. Neither guy can compete in the other guy's sport, come on, stop with this crap.

oh well, would have been a good laugh if Toney could of kept up the trash talk. ofcourse now we can look forward to countless threads and blogs about how much boxing sucks even though Boxing is all the UFC can ever talk about, and how could you blame em. boxing is awesome. as for the debate, Couture answered the obvious and it is the reason why the UFC will always be insecure on some levels. no one is ever knocking out a boxer in the octagon standing up, and as effective as wrestling is in a fight it is never going to win over fans of stand up fighting since it is just not as esthetically pleasing to the eye. Gracie proved this years ago.
That doesnt make any sense. So should the UFC do the same with all combat sports? Send their best to compete in a Karate tournament. Send their best to compete in a judo match?
MMA is the sport of fighting.....you can use whatever style you want within certain rules. We just witnessed a wrestler manhandle a boxer last night. Just like we witnessed a JuJitsu fighter name Gracie doing the same back in 1993.

It is the UFC and boxing who compete with each other because they are both the top earners in the combat entertaining industry. When was the last time you ever watched a Karate, Judo, or real life wrestling on PPV. An MMA champion could make money if he steps in the ring because people would pay to watch it. But we all know that will not happen. At the end of the day it is all entertainment
It was a circus act! Fuk Dana White and Toney for that crap.
Both of them should be gloating. White because his hype made it look like MMA is better than boxing, and Toney, who got paid for a lousy 3 minute workout with hardly throwing any meaningful punch. MMA and boxing are different.
double edged sword for the UFC
on one hand many mma fans will feel their sport is superior, on the other side the card was pretty aweful bar one fight and thats only because of comparison to the others.
Ive enjoyed the last few UFC events and was really lookin forward to this one, but it was just..bad
