Once considered the future of the middleweight division. Boxing's next big star. A series of thrilling knockouts, a war with Miranda resulting in an impressive beatdown and stoppage, a war with Taylor resulting in an impressive stoppage.
Since then, aside from some guys not on his level, he's been embarrassed by Hopkins and Martinez. Both good and crafty boxers.
Now fans have turned their backs on the puncher as it is obvious that he cannot handle crafty boxers. Martinez and Hopkins being two of the best.
How would you match him to resurrect and guide him to as much success as he can possible have in Boxing?
He needs to move away from his town for a start, plus a new trainer that doesn't shout double jab 24/7, and prob move up to 168lb.
seriously needs to learn another dimension to boxing, walking forward and throwing bombs will only get you so far..
Full on Rocky 3 style where he has to learn all the basics again.

He's still young. I'd move him completely away from his current people and I mean AWAY...bye bye Youngstown and everybody he's in any way close to for no less than 2 or 3 years. Next I'd get him a real trainer to teach him to box. Nacho Bernstein would work perfectly as then Kelly would have to go to Mex D.F. and would be surrounded by a rich boxing culture where he doesn't know anybody and where the only way he's gonna' get any kind of positive reinforcement is to apply himself to his craft and make progress.
It'll never happen, but you asked...:frown:
New trainer, someone who can bring him to the next level.
Hes got the goods he just doesnt know how to use it.
He did good against sergio, almost came back to win. Then he got two bad cuts over both his eyes and completely fell apart.
Like zab judah, i would have him change trainers or at least put his trainer second in command...he needs another look before he turns around and clicks his heels and checks his record and it has 4 or 5 losses...after his 4th loss, judah shouldve gotten another look...now pavlik needs another look...that plodding forward style needs some work...ITs plainly obvious he cant handle good slick boxers ala Felix trinidad :)
One thing everything forgets is that he has a pretty sizable minimum per fight. Top Rank is not going to be able to pay him six figures to fight a nobody. They won't risk losing money on a PPV and will want to match him up in a fight one of the networks will buy.
I don't know what i'd do but I would not keep him at 160 if he is struggling to make the weight. He can't beat any of the champions at the weight anyway. But you might say the same for 168. 175 might be too high for him...
Let's see what Arum does. He will proberbly realise that Pavlik is no longer of much value and use him as bait to build up Chavez Jr and his other fighters.
Some one in this thread already said it...Come forward fighters like Andrade(@168), Angulo/Chavez Jr(@160), Margarito(@ 160 win or lose vs Pacquiao), and then finally a big fight in Canada vs a non come forward fighter Lucian Bute.
Also a fight that nobody has mentioned. Miguel Cotto vs Kelly Pavlik at 160. If Cotto beats Chavez Jr he'd have won a belt at 154 and defended it once. Then he'll jump at the chance of being champ in 4 weight classes and finally giving himself a chance to be a HOFer. He also gets a come forward fighter in Kelly Pavlik, a dangerous one, but still with a basic 1-2 style. Kelly Pavlik gets a small guy in Cotto, a chance to beat a big name, make a lot of money in Boardwalk Hall in NJ where Borikuas and Pavlik fans will sell it out and most importantly Pavlik can people to talk about him again.
Pavlik vs Cotto in 2011 is a win-win for both fighters, mainly Cotto. But for Pavlik it's a win-win financially. For Cotto both financially, historically, and if he loses he can always go back to 154 and fight the Angulos and Margarito rematch.
This is a difficult one. His confidence is shot right now. When he was doing well he was really an over achiever. It is going to be very difficult near impossible to change his style and in his case I am sure the phrase "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" is true. If Roach was looking after him he would get him on track by careful matchmaking. That is the only path that I can see working. Roach would have never let him get in the ring with Hopkins. Every dog has it's day and Pavlik has had his IMO.
He should fight andrade right a way.What a war:boxing:
His confidence is shot to sh%t right now.
Eric Lucas tried to comeback against Andrade and got beatdown.
Would be fun though.
The WORST thing he could do is go in and fight a no-hoper his next fight. Now, he doesn't have to matched with the best possible opponent out there, but he needs to be put in with someone in the top 10/15. They're wasting their time throwing him in with the Gary Locketts of the world.
Purposely look very bad against a bum (put less pressure and try to use movement like what Juan Diaz does now) to lure Chavez Jr, and then knock him the f**k out when he thinks he's in the ring with damaged goods

indeed, would be a fantastic fight. if he cant beat andrade, he will never be world class anyway, so he'd know just to fight on ESPN for the rest of his career.
Go to 168 and stay busy against sub par comp.
Fighting every two or three months.
Progressivley getting tougher with each fight.
Then fight Andrade.
Building to a huge fight with Abraham.

thing about kelly pavlik is, fans turned off of him because he made a bunch of lame ass mandatories when he could have been fighting some better opposition. then he gets staph infection on his hand and has a long layoff. kelly was HOT after that amazing jermain taylor win (FANTASTIC fight!) but he just let himself cool off. he didn't take a single match anyone gave a shit about until hopkins, and hopkins schooled the living shit out of him. he did good against martinez, but was ultimately outcrafted and beat up at the end.
my first order of business would be to get kelly a new trainer. someone good and legit. leow can't do shit at the top level. hopkins is beating the shit out of him and all he can say every round is DOUBLE JAB! if beating hopkins was that simple then im sure a lot of people would have by now. kelly can't keep going with a jackleg trainer any longer. he will be at the ESPN level for the rest of his career if he does.
second thing DO NOT FIGHT BUTE! my god kelly will get destroyed, plus no one REALLY cares about the fight. i mean its a good fight and ill tune in, but its not important. bute is coming off great wins and kelly is coming off a string of wins that are so lackluster that they might as well be losses and 2 bad cases of getting outclassed.
its hard imagining kelly to attain the necessary skills to beat the top guys in the game at this level, but if he is going to do it he needs to get a new trainer. if he stays with leow he never gets a real title again, and if he does its a paper title.

Have him fight as many come forward plodders as possible. For his next 2 fights seek out Angulo, Librado Andrade, possibly even Glenn Johnson at Light Heavyweight. SMW is too crowded with the sort of movers and crafty guys that would dismantle him. Might have to stick to either MW or LHW. A couple spectacular brawls and knockouts on HBO would put his hype train right back on track. Oh and double the f*ckin' jab Kell.. Touch him low.
