From Dan Rafael's 'QUICK HITS' column:
Lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez's decision against Juan Diaz in their pay-per-view rematch of 2009's fight of the year last week generated between 150,000 and 200,000 buys, far exceeding what was needed to break even, Golden Boy's Schaefer told ESPN.com. "I think it has an opportunity to reach 200,000," Schaefer said. "We only have the satellite numbers, but they are strong. I'm very pleased. With the gate we did, $900,000, and the closed circuit, it shows that Marquez has established himself as a star in the United States. It also shows as well that an outstanding undercard created an event not only driven by the main event. I was very pleased with the way it was embraced."

If you look at both fighters coming off a lost, in a rematch that a lot of people didn't want to see and for it being in the lightweight division. The numbers are actually pretty damn solid.
Watch the Failipinos get all upset because Arum expected Pac-Marquez to do 500K...and it failed.
Then Mayweather does well over a million vs Marquez.
its tough to compare a barely known Pac's numbers when he fough JMM to a well established Money's numbers vs jmm and it being on deiz y seis weekend...
and people claimed JMM was a draw? floyd did 1.1mil on his own and 1.4mil.
get it floyd
DID u throw your boxing knowledge to all da lady's at da club last night:dunce:Just curious
Did you really expect a fight we all had seen already to generate a decent amount of interest the second time? We all knew the outcome of the fight before the first bell.
yup... Now watch mosleys ppv do less than that.
I don't see that PPV breaking 50k. So stupid to put it up against JuanMa vs R. Marquez...
I just don't get that. They could probably get quite a bit more if they wouldn't have scheduled against one of the biggest fights of the year...
i guess Gabe Montoya was right
folks are blind sheep......this ppv wasnt worth no 50 bones, i dont care how anyone tries to twist it....i guess from this result, the weak ass golden girl ppv in september will do the same...
The minute we as fans stop buying these weak ppvs and the big ppvs with weak undercards, then they (the promoters) will have to listen....thats just my opinion tho
oh yeah cause him vs baldomir did 1 million also right?
Exactly.
People seriously underestimate the power of hype. Just look at it this way- Mayweather-Judah did 350K buys if I'm not mistaken. That was without 24/7, without the hype Money enjoys now, and it was a very good number.
If they fought now and had the full 24/7 treatment, sponsorships, constant TV commercials, round the clock media coverage, etc that PPV would do an easy 1 million+ buys.
And Marquez is coming off a big loss, fighting a guy he KO'ed already, with no hype, no 24/7, and they pulled in c. 200K. If Marquez fought Khan and got a 24/7 and the works, he could pull in 500-700K buys.
People need to put things in perspective.
you guys are stupid, put marquez vs someone like khan, hatton, or any big name that marquez has a chance to make history and it will do big numbers, its funny how most of you idiots forgot how meaningless this fight was in the first place, so 200k is pretty impressive
I agree with you that Marquez vs Khan would do great number s
but this 150-200 K aint impressive to me cuz he had like 100 K with Casamayor and back then it was terrible undercard ,it was GBP PPV not HBO PPV,and in this PPV Oscar De La Hoya invest serious money in undercard!
So 50 K more is nothing if you have Golden Child on undercard,Linares,Casamayor,Guerrero,Juarez!
How is this possible? After all, the experts on this message board declared Marquez the star when he fought Mayweather and said it was Marquez who was responsible for generating 1 million PPV buys, not Mayweather. How is it possible that Marquez can go from 1 million PPV with a "boring runner" like Mayweather and only generate 200,000 against an all-action fighter in Diaz?
Wait. Is it possible that Mayweather was the star and the reason why the PPV sold so well? If so, that would mean that all the experts/haters on this site were wrong and we all know that Pactards are never wrong!!!:twak:
Are you retarded?
Marquez is coming off a lopsided loss, fighting a guy he already knocked out, in a PPV fight that was not marketed in the least. No 24/7, no commercials, nothing. I'd say that's a pretty good pull considering it wasn't really a PPV worthy fight. Mayweather-Marquez had like 6 months of high end advertising because of Money's 'rib injury' and Floyd fighting Manny's 'rival' and then setting up a superfight with him afterwards added to the luster. It's like comparing apples and oranges. How was the 24/7 for Marquez-Diaz? How many times did you see commercials for it on TV? Did the Sportscenter crew hype it up? See my drift?
200K buys for this fight is nice pull and is good for the sport because it shows that fans are willing to dish out $50 to see guys like Diaz who don't have a fraction of the hype of guys like Floyd, Pacquiao, Cotto, etc. And it means GBP, Top Rank, HBO, etc might be more willing to put together solid cards and gamble on them instead of just focusing on the megafights.
Everyone wins if this trend continues.
damn, so basically Mayweather generated 1 million in his fight against Marquez? the fuck?No sir. Mayweather vs Marquez did 1 million. Marquez has a following, but fans turn out more in the bigger fights. For "Numero Uno" Marquez played a big role in the numbers. These numbers are not bad for a complete shit fight.
Aslong as they made money on it it was probably worth it, people forget 300k is not a bad ppv number aslong as they are only paying a few million for the main event so 200k ish for an event that was marginal at best is a pretty good base.
It sucks though because I like JMM and he will probably only be on PPV now but that is good for him because he deserves the paydays.
