Now that one of boxing's best is retired, what would you rate his heart ? Vote.
There's no debating how great of an athlete RJJ was. Hell, he's arguably the most talented fighter to ever graze our beloved sport. But, boxing doesn't end and stop at ones God given talents. Having great inner fortitude plays a major role in a sport that is unforgiving.
Personally, I thought RJJ's heart was where his weakness layed.
Its tough to judge his heart. He was so much better then everyone he fought until the very end of his career that he never got tested at all. Once he did get tested he was too far gone to do much about it. I cant say I fault the guy for not having heart. Nothing to base it on.
It's easy to dismiss his early career, but he clearly showed that he had heart.
That first Tarver fight or the rubber match with Tarver where he'd already been KO'd big time and he still wanted to rematch and it's not like he needed the money. He was getting beaten around the ring by Calzaghe and cut and still wanted to continue fighting.
He's continued well past his sell by date and on this occasion it wasn't for money, I think he's a fighter who just loves the sport.
I said "to some degree". Yes, De La Joto and Tyson quit in their last fights, but, RJJ might as well have quit, it's not like he was trying to make a fight out of it.
See man, I know RJJ was trying to fight, but he wasn't really letting it go, in the back of his mind, I'm almost certain that he was afraid to get KTFO again if he just let it all hang out, with whatever he had left.
When watching past fights of great fighters, I mean, PAC for example, could've easily pulled an RJJ move against Erika, but, no, he fought his @ss off. There are guys who say they're willing to die in the ring, for some reason if guys like Ali and PAC say that they're willing to die in there, I would believe it, the other guys, they just give me the impression of wanting to sound tough.
Pacman has a good chin so he don't have to worry about getting KO'd. Let's see how pacman react when he lose 25lbs and face a bigger guy.

I see what you are saying. I guess Cotto would be another example of pulling a Roy against Pac. But if a guy who just wants to look and sound tough by just hanging in there, he still taking shots and taking a beating. A guy who finished a fight (although in a cautious way) deserves way more respect than a guy who just quits. The fans don't pay to see quitters.
Roy has heart, but of course not as much as guys Ali, Pac, Vargas, Holyfield, etc.

seriously dude ure not giving credit where credit is due
not even the great antonio margarito likes to slug it out anymore and hes made career out of it
actually erik morales was looking like he would lose from the get go and quit but decided to fight pac back in their first fight, that is the true definition of heart seeing as he was also past his prime
nobody is willing to die for a paycheck and we as fans cant expect athletes to do so, best believe that
See, you're mistaking toughness for heart. There's alot of tough-minded guys, but don't have great heart, a good example was Mike Tyson, he was very tough, but lacked heart, and to some degree I think RJJ belongs in Tyson's category when it comes to heart.
Now, for guys who have great hearts, we're talkin' about guys like Evander, Ali, PAC and so on..
Guys who are tough will hang around and take their whippin' like a man. But, fighters who have great hearts will fight their @sses off no matter how bad it gets for them. That's the main difference.
Ali took his beating and fought his @ss off in some of the most memorable fights in history. PAC took his beating against Erika but fought till the bitter end. Evander was taking punishment but was giving as good as he got, you can't say the same for fighters like De La Joto, RJJ and Mike, they just showed that they could take a good beating but weren't really fighting their @sses off in those losses.
good post except for the last two paragraphs, wouldve given u green k if u didnt contradict yourself
your definition of heart should include de la hoya, seeing as he did fight his ass off in every loss.
he fought and beat trinidad handily, outboxed him, rocked him, wasnt forced to fight it out seeing as he was comfortably ahead
fought mosley twice and went toe to toe with the guy when mosley was considered one of the biggest punchers p4p
boxed hopkins until he got hit by that liver shot
forced mayweather to fight his fight for the first 5 rounds which only castillo had done throughout floyds career
couldnt pull the trigger against pac but still hung in there to try

Jones - Tarver I what you call that? toughness?
Against calzaghe you can tell that he was going after a KO. He tried to win.
Jones never quit the way tyson did.
Toughness has nothing to do with it. If he was that tough he wouldn't be KO'd.

You have a good point, but I don't think it's fair to place Jones in same category of Tyson and Oscar. Roy never quit a fight, Tyson and De la hoya both quit in their last fights.
Mixed feelings I suppose. I don't think he's got a Freitas jello heart and the reason I say that is because we have seen him dig deep a couple of times like in the first Griffin and Tarver fights. Can't knock him too much. But just standing there like a punching bag with a Winky Wright stance isn't being Arturo Gatti either. But in Roy's defense, he did that when he was totally washed up.
Having a weak chin doesn't translate to having no heart. Roy never quit. He was so great in his prime that he didn't need to show heart. Towards his later years when he was the underdog in his fights and was taking beatings, he definitely showed heart.
I don't think so. Yes he doesn't have an iron chin. Yes he got KO'd more than once, but you can't take away his passion to the sport.
In the 1st tarver fight, you can see that he was done since round 5, but he kept walking through fire till the end and was able to take the last 2 rounds when he had to.
In the 2nd tarver fight, he got caught with a solid left that sent him to the floor. He GOT UP, but the ref stopped the fight.
The glen johnson fight, Jones took power shots all night. Got caught, his head hit the floor hard, TRIED TO GET UP, but he couldn't.
When you get KO'd cold two Consecutive times the way roy did, it takes a lot of heart and courge to get back to the ring. It's a place where you say that's enough.
Calzaghe fight, joe was landing everything. Jones got a cut above his left eye, it didn't matter he fought till the end.
Green fight, the 41yrs old roy got KD by a hard puncher(green) with one punch, GOT UP, green finished what he started.
It takes a lot of heart to fight at the age of 40. And by the way, roy isn't retired yet.
