Earlier this morning, Zab Judah spoke to reporters in a brief conference call to discuss his upcoming fight on July 16 as well as his future.
Though his next fight against Jose Armando Santa Cruz will be contested at 143 pounds, Judah (38-6, 26 KOs) maintains that he's a junior welterweight and will indeed make the 140-pound limit in future fights. When pressed about the reasoning he's not making 140 for this fight, Judah joked, "those extra 3 pounds are comfort; like a comfy pillow," then reiterated that he'd lose the extra pounds if a title was at stake.
Judah said he's been in the gym everyday preparing for the fight and mentioned that he's sparred with former The Contender alumn, Ishe Smith.
As it relates to future fights, he mentioned Amir Khan, Timothy Bradley and Devon Alexander as fighters he'd like to compete against. When asked specifically about Alexander, Judah said he'd love a fight against him in St. Louis.
"Super" Judah, also talked about his lengthy venture into the welterweight division, where he became the undisputed champ by beating Cory Spinks. "147 was a pot of gold for me; that's all it was," said Judah when talking about the move up in weight. He admitted that given his speed and power, he was able to get away with fighting in a higher division for some time but that he's a natural 140-pounder and intends in competing there.
"I'm campaigning at 140 pounds. I don't want to hear about 147 anymore," proclaimed Judah.
The former two-division champ also acknowledged the Cotto-Foreman bout from last week and said he was pleased to see the turnout from the fans and hopes to do the same at some point.
When asked about his return to former promoter Main Events, Judah stated that "everything comes full circle, and the timing was right."
Are you guys blind? His next fight is the Friday before Bradley-Abregu against Jose Armanda Santa Cruz. I still have doubts that he'll make 140 effectively though. I also doubt he'll get fights with Bradley and Alexander, since they're most likely unifying this Fall. His best bet is Khan or Ortiz. He fits the description of the type of guys GBP puts them in with (washed up big names).
Zab doesn't have the defense & chin to cope with Maidana's pressure & power.
But can maidana cope with judah's speed and power? Mentally judah sucks but physically judah is at the top with some of his natural ability. He is one of the hardest hitting WW, he hits harder than margarito, mosley, pacquiao, and clottey. And that is coming from miguel cotto.
Judah just doesn't have "IT" anymore to beat the top 5 JrWWs....Judah has the skillset to give Khan, Bradley and Alexander problems...but from the 6th/7th round on...I see him either losing steam....or losing focus and getting caught with something nasty (not by Bradley though)....he should just make it a NY/NY affair and crack Malignaggi at MSG.
I love Zab but when is he actually gonna fight again? I give Bradley shit about the Alexander fight, but bradley tried to get Zab before he took the fight with the BUM at 147 and Zab said NO, he had yet another shot and outright passed on it. Now,he says he wants to fight Bradley Kahn & Alexander all the sudden, when not long ago he needed a tune up and refused to fight and still has yet to even announce a fight? Like i said I love Zab but he's talking to much and doing too little these days, I read his last fight was a nightmare with hardly anyone showing up and fighting a no name, if he wants to fight he needs to get going now and stop talking.
Also, im all for a St.Louis fight, but if he owes King money it will never happen anyone that knows anything about King knows that much, if it was Arum it would be the same as well, those men rip people off not get ripped off themselves, if Judah owes King the fight will never happen until the exact second King receives his money.
