After the towel was thrown, Mercante said he didnt feel like it had to be stopped at that time, which is partly true because Yuri wasn't physically taking much abuse from punches at the time. But didn't he see that yuri was in real pain, and that he was going to fight through regardless of it.
The corner saw this and tried stopping it before risking serious or permanent injury.
Why didnt he ask for a ringside doctor`s opinion?
Shouldn't the final decision come from the corner and not the ref?
If u break your hand half of your offense is off. If you pop your knee your offense and defense is off dude. You cant punch without your knees but you would only know that if you know boxing.
So without any offense or defense you have no business in the ring
Got it?
:pat: :pat: :pat:
so he had a bum knee.... do you know how many fighters stand in the ring flat footed and dont use their legs?!?!?!
they all use their hands...
the only time the ref is to stop a fight like this is when serious injury is at risk... a f*cked up knee can be easily fixed with a non invasive procedure...
stop crying... :bottle:

when was the last time someone was seriously mentally debilitated from a knee injury? or even worse died from a torn ACL or similar??
they dont stop the fight when a fighter breaks his hand do they??
Unprofessional crew at ringside.
Where was the doc?
Merchante Jr is terrible and dangerous. I dont want more people get hurt because of his incompetence.

i think everyone was in agreement when the towel was thrown that it was a good decision, yet the ref shrugged it off.
Im all for fighters showing toughness and heart, but losing a knee like that has to be one of the worst ring injuries. He cant plant, pivot, or even move side to side. He's forced to try to punch and defend from 1 leg. In my opinion, its alot worse than a cut, and a broken rib. He was almost defenseless, against a still fresh cotto.
props to yuri, but he had no chance after his leg gave out
exactly youri had zero mobility and was taking some clean shots form Cotto. the guy was a helpless human punching bag at that moment it was pointless IMO
Hearing Mercante repetitively saying "Suck it up" immediately reminded me of the last time I saw him ref a fight. And it was no shock that it was another Cotto fight. Cotto vs Judah. Where he was telling Zab to "Suck it up" while Cotto was trying to crush Zab's balls into oblivion.
He looked like a dumb meathead telling Foreman to walk it off. He should have just gotten the doctor up there to look at the knee.
He also said it to Clottey when he fought Cotto after Cotto slammed him down.
its the refs choice watch the earl vs katisdis fight earl corner chucked the towel in coz earl was hit with a couple of good shots but as soon at the towel went in the ref chucked it out because earl was fighting back and put katisdis down seconds later.

Aren't the cornermen supposed to consult the doc or someone else before they can throw in the towel. He didn't know where that towel came in. I thought he handled it very well. And now to me that just because a small special moment in boxing history. Where even though Yuri was gunna lose he still didn't wanna give up, he showed tremendous heart, where it was foolish or not. And I thought it was good for boxing, and it's good to know we have fighters out there that have heart like that, even if he isn't the most exciting fighter. But he gave us a good showing last night.
Except it's not possible to treat a knee injury like a cut. There's no reliable way for a doctor to determine the severity of a knee injury without xrays and an mri.
Only possibly gauge would be whether or not foreman could stand on move around on the leg which he clearly demonstrated he could.
exactly!!!!!
whats the Dr gonna say about a superficial knee injury?
its not like he can look at it like a cut, or just do a quick MRI on it.... he only knows what he sees and what the fighter tells him... it could be a mild sprain or as bad as torn ligaments, but asking the Dr wouldnt have helped.... he would have asked Yuri who would have said 'im fine'

I think that they shouldve treated it like a cut, let the doctor decide. The ref was making a gut move not one motivated by his expertise.
