I have heard every thing from drugs and metal illness to death threats to take a dive. It was one of the most unique nights in boxing that most people never talk about. Does anyone have any insight as to what took place this particular night?
McCall was/is a cocaine and drug addict. He had no business being in the ring. Don King shoudl have been prosecuted for putting him in with Lennox that night.
That win is one of the worst wins in Lewis' careers. Shameful fight. Not Lewis fault, he just did his job, just the circumstances were shameful for boxing as a sport.
It definitely was one of the most bizarre moments in boxing. I remember looking in disbelief like, " why is this dude crying, not even attempting to fight back, or at least cover up his face. " About 6 months or a year later, a friend told me that he saw an interview where McCall said that he was forced to throw in the fight by none other than the king himself. Why would King force his fighter to throw a fight? Supposedly, it was part of the deal that King made with Lewis. When Lewis was the WBC's # 1 contender, he was set to fight Bruno for the WBC belt. In order for Tyson to get a crack at the title, King made a deal with Lewis for an undisclosed amount of cash, and assured him that a fight with Tyson would be bigger $$$ if Tyson had the belt. After Tyson knocked out Bruno, King refused to keep his end of the deal, and instead Tyson relinquished the belt. This paved way for Lewis VS McCall II, where allegedly, McCall was forced to throw in the fight as a form of restitution. At that point it all made sense; why McCall was crying and didn't even attempt to defend himself. What choices did he have? Fight back and possibly win the fight at the expense of losing his career. Besides, King probably assured him of getting another shot at the title. I can see King saying, " Don't take it personal, Lewis gave up a chance at the title and now he's gonna get it back, just as I promised. Throw in the fight and you'll be back in this same position in no time. Muhammad and Frazier and all them guys did it too. It's just part of the game baby." Perhaps that was enough to convince Mccall to throw in the fight. McCall may not have been happy at the idea of throwing a fight against an opponent he had previously TKO, thus the crying. Whether it is true or not, I don't know. What we do know is that boxing, as every other business, if filled with all sorts of corruption and politics.
McCall's chin was unreal.
everyone always says this...are there any good fights besides the lewis fights that i can watch where he takes some big bombs? i want to see this "godlike" chin for myself
was it better than chuvalos? better than tuas? VK's?
That is true. At the post fight press conference McCall was totally delusional.
Yeah I remember him trying to pretend like it was all intentional and he was outraged that they wouldn't let him do it.
Emotional breakdown, aggravated by drug use and probably a violent childhood sounds more reasonable to me.
He certainly proved he has one serious chin that night though. I guess that's why people are usually afraid of crazy mofos.
It was actually a tactic to draw Lewis in so McCall could knock him out, like the rope a dope.
...no Im serious, that was what he said.
Doubt him?

That fight was thrown, something very strange happened and was happening
From the horses mouth a few years ago: He claimed he threw the fight because of enormous drugs and gambling debts, but couldn't bear actually going down and taking a KO. This very well could be an excuse he's made up in recent years tho.
No link to source, because I am the source, so you can take my word for what it's worth.
This is the type of stuff I was interested to hear. Interesting
I've always heard the same that McCall was dynamite in the gym but in the actual fights, he tended to freeze. Like Ice-Man John Scully mentioned a while back, some fighters are better in the gym than in the actual fights.
Even Tyson, Rooney and others said Tyson was even better in the gym in some of his sparring sessions than in the actual fights.
2:26 for what Tommy had to say about McCall
One of the clips I saw on McCall in the post-fight for that fight had McCall saying something about how he was "just getting warmed up"...some crazy stuff like that. Like he was about to boil or something.
McCall was a Big MFer and it seems his children are too.
I just remember this bit from the interview especially thinking...Goddamn.

All of these Bizzare happenings are caused by the same exact stimuli: Fear Fear makes a man do stupid things and in the back of McCalls mind I think he knew that a dominant loss to Lennox would end his 15 mins of fame, so he behaved like an idiot instead of taking his beating like a man. Here are other examples:
Another Lewis opponent chickens out and behaves like a retard
Cintron leaps out of the ring
He used to get emotional before fights, according to himself he did so because he was a mellow person and needed to change into a more aggressive mentality in order to be able to fight. Against Lewis he got overboard with it and couldn't control himself, probably because he was coming off drug rehab. The fight was also very frustrating for him with Lewis being cautious and McCall having to absorb big punches to force the fight, so he basically gave up trying.
McCall is a drug user but he has never really been a threat to anybody except inside the ring from what I've heard. You can see that he doesn't really have any kind of "killer instinct" in the ring, most of his knockouts were one punch KO's or his opponents folding, not him putting the finishing touch on it.
McCall actually did well in the second round of that fight. He was always so dangerous with that counterpunching of his. He was always a potential banana skin for any top heavyweight. He could have been a lot more though.

all joking aside, Ive read interviews about McCall. He was constantly on drugs during his career, and pretty much never trained. His life was a mess.
He would have been a monster if he had actually focused on boxing. Such raw power and one of the best chins you will EVER see...a little raw and not very fast, but thats what happens when you live his kind of lifestyle...
I hope hes content with his life right now.
the whole incident looks a little funny.i really wouldnt be surprised if he was somehow influenced into throwing the fight.just looking at his corner you can tell something was up.
Also I recall someone (I think it was Lamply) saying they held McCall's purse over this incident. I'm surprised this does not get talked about more because the whole thing was bizarre.
I think the main reason was McCall realized that Lewis was not gonna rush in this time and try and knock him out like peppy corria the trainer had told lewis to in the first fight ! ....when Lewis was on form very few fighters could touch him technically :boxing:

Yeah I did hear this as well. I forgot to mention this in the original post. In fact I recall hearing that at some point McCall indicated to Mills Lane that this was his intention and that's why it went on for as long as it did.
