WBO's letter to Martinez and Dibella: on the rule and why they're making him vacate

It's just them being stingy, and greedy.They don't want him to fight at 154 unless they are making some of the profit off it. It's ridiculous IMO. Boxing is full of sharks! No arguement from me there, haha.

Martinez should fight at 154lbs and dominate. The way these fighters are protected now days, I doubt the right fights get made.

Actually, the rule isn't terrible, it's just the fact that they put ridiculous timelines on these rules. 10 days?? What a joke. No, the rule to me is terrible. I would understand if he held both WBO titles in two different weight classes - they don't want a double division champion, fine. But to jump on his case because he holds a title with a DIFFERENT sanctioning body at a different weight class is pretty sad, considering I doubt the WBC minds at all. IMO the sanctioning bodies beef with each other too often, it's why we don't get half of the unification bouts we're entitled to, instead are forced to watch mandatories or see a fighter get stripped.

Dear Lou: The WBO is very pleased with Sergio’s accomplishment on April 17th that crowned him the WBO Middleweight Champion of the world. Then, on the 11th of May in a ceremony presided by the WBO President, Francisco Valcárcel in Guaynabo, PR he was officially bestowed with the WBO Middleweight 160 pound championship belt. The unification of titles, together with other achievements, also led to receiving the most coveted WBO Super Champion recognition. Section 15 (c) of the WBO Regulations states that: “A WBO Champion who wins a non-WBO Championship in a weight class that is different from the weight class in which he holds his WBO Championship must decide within ten (10) days of the non-WBO Championship which title and weight class he will retain. No WBO Champion may hold a non-WBO Championship title in a weight class that is different from the weight class of his WBO Championship.” It was stated in conversations between Sergio’s representatives and WBO President Francisco Valcárcel, after the outstanding bout on the April 17th, and ratified during the ceremony in Puerto Rico, that Sergio was keeping his 160 pound titles. Yet, more than a month after the bout, he stills holds the WBC 154 pound title. Therefore, we hereby request that within the next 48 hours, no later than Wednesday, May 26th, a letter of intent is provided showing that Sergio has vacated said title. If it is not received, we will understand that “Maravilla” Martínez has decided to keep the WBC 154 pound title, and we will be obligated to recommend the WBO Executive Committee vacate the 160 pound title. We are very proud to have him as our reigning WBO Middleweight Champion and look forward to his future accomplishments within our organization.
