Who invented the Shoulder roll?
And who uses it best?(obviously floyd)
of all the fighters i saw using the shoulder roll: Floyd SR, Roger mayweather,James toney. cant think of others..But few like Oscar and malinnagi have tried but not too successful..
c'mon now guys....that's ridiculous......
it originated in the mid-west......my guess is philly.....since it is often called a philly shell.....or otherwise Michigan would be a good bet too..........it's obviously taught by the "old school legendary trainers" as floyd puts it in Michigan....you can actually see Roger Mayweather using it to great effect in his fight with Vinny Paz...in a similar, albeit less polished way to Floyd Jr..........it was taught to guys like Toney, Roger Mayweather, Big Floyd, Little Floyd etc....it's no coincidence the 2 current guys who use it are both from Michigan.......
check hooks, pull counters and all that stuff that requires great skills to execute is taught in the mid-west.......
philly is on the east coast not the mid west
Good point, although I think there is an actual answer for the fighter who invented the jab.
To the Ts if you at George Benton, Archie Moore, Joe Walcott you can see them using some variation of the technique
Those are the guys Toney liked watching.
Toney pwns Floyd, especially in regards to the shoulder roll.
I'v seen Nikolai Korolev, a 1930's and 40's Soviet HW, use a shoulder roll. No doubt guys like Moore and Walcott weren't the first either.
I imagine old timer defensive wizards like Young Griffo used similar techniques long before TV was invented.
It all started by Rick. If you watch the full video you can see as Mayweather Sr. was imitating the sholder roll when he was a bar tender back in the day. He took the bar tender job as a coverup just to learn the sholder roll from Rick.

Your obviously trying to tell us, not ask us.
it was invented or was used by a ancient greek boxer, (cant remember his name) who allowed people to punch away at his shoulder and arms, then would simply wait for his opponents to tire out, then would knock them out.
is this true?

"I invented the Shoulder Roll." "James Toney is the DEVIL!"

the shoulder roll was invented to counter the right hand. rolling with a punch is something boxers have been doing for centuries.
the philly-shell is the defensive style that toney and mayweather use. by its name it was either invented there or used heavily by boxers who came outta philly at one point in time.

I actually like Toneys shoulder roll better. Toneys whole defense is basically the shoulder roll Mayweather also relies on his reflexes to move out of the way of punches.
Rolling the shoulder back to defend/slip from punches has been around for a long time. Don't know when or who invented it but it wasn't a recent creation. The Toneys and Mayweathers have just molded what was already existing into their own versions of it.
I think Toney is the first fighter to really use the style that you are thinking of. The guys saying Walcott or Moore used it, they probably did it but not to an effective style. Think Toney was the first to really put it in an effective style and Mayweather has somewhat perfected it. Think a lot of fighters that can use it, will use it now because it is a good style to use.
Think this is correct but change Archie Moore for Ezzard Charles,
(Archie Moore had the / created the awkward cross arm defence which he used).
Toney has stated numerous times that he learned from studying the old timers, Jersey Joe and Ezzard in particular, my guess is that he took their styles and changed them to make his own, more effective shoulder roll.
toney is a natural . i dont think anyone taught toney how how
Bill Miller taught him how to use it, also he studied the techniques of a lot of the old school fighters, as seen in this vid
