Is it really that they're past prime or they just were never that good?
Ricky Hatton(Drinking problem) 31
Paulie Malignaggi(Hand problems) 29
Miguel Cotto(Defense problems) 29
Jermain Taylor(Stamina) 31
Zab Judah(4 round fighter) 32
Carlos Quintana(Paul Williams) 33
Kelly Pavlik(Bernard Hopkins) 28
None in this list are prime fighters, look at their age. That's terrible.
What would old school fighters say about these guys?(the fighters that fought over 100 fights). These guys fight 40 fights and are done.
How about fighters that fought over 100 fights? What about Jones, Mosley, Pacquiao, Mayweather? Jones has almost 60 fights, he was past prime around 35 I think. Mosley almost has 60 fights and is 38 still fighting elites and not getting KO'ed. Hopkins 45 still fighting, Mayweather and Pacquiao are over 30 years old, still prime with over 40 fights are at their best.
floyd isnt prime anymore....he hasnt been since like 05-06 ... but hes still the best.. just aint prime thats all
Lots of boxers have been doing the sport non stop since they were kids. Some boxers would rather do something else then get punched in the head once they have a few mil.
When you get in ur 30's ur reflex and timing starts to slow down, which throughs off a fighters game. You have to readjust ur brain to ur body again and focus more on the timing.. (timing=speed).....and have great conditing!...
Like bhop..he forces his opponents to fight at a slower pace which still makes him effective.
well some of those guys it had to do with the wars or beatings they took: Cotto & Jermain Taylor for example. Getting KO'd multiple times can fuuck you up and you'll never be the same.
Pavlik has to do with the fact he lost to two guys that have the style to beat him and make him look bad. He's not past prime, just cant beat guys like Bhop and Martinez.
Zab Judah is just a mental midget.
Paulie Malignaggi never was that great.
Everyones bodies age differently too and it depends on how many wars they've been in (inside & outside the ring), lifestyle, etc etc etc.
Basically, there are a lot of reasons.
Everything you said plus years of sparring can also take it's toll.
Julio Cesar Chavez was 32 years old when he lost to DLH, BUT he had over ONE HUNDRED pro fights so it was only fair that he would already be past prime by that age. But 30-35 fights being past prime at 30 years old??? Come on, then you were never that great or you were horribly mismanaged.
Normally you'd think an athlete should be at their best in the mid to late 20s but every person is different.
Some fighters have more wear-and-tear, some start earlier, some don't take care of themselves between camps. Wilfred Benitez started very young and had a reputation for not taking care of his body between fights. He was past it by his mid 20s. Meldrick Taylor started young, he was 23 when he lost to Chavez, and he took too much punishment. And this is where the bad management comes into play, two years later, after being dropped twice and rocked several times in a title defense against Glenwood Brown, was matched up at a higher weight with Terry Norris. :wtf:
Whereas Bernard Hopkins started fighting professionally at a relative late age, trained like an animal, and lived like a monk. I personally think his prime was 1996-2001 (ages 31-36), but he's so dedicated and has a high ring IQ that he was able to fight at a very high level for years after that.
How many times does it take for you guys to understand it has nothing to do with age but the amount of wear you have on your body.
A 36 year old Hopkins is much different than a 36 year old Vargas for example. Guys age differently, it is what it is.
Exactly another example is Jorge Arce, guy is like 30 years old and looks like he's 40.

Hopkins is an extreme anomaly, you can count on one hand the fighters throughout history who has been able to do what he is doing at age 45.
Mosley has clearly aged compared to five or ten years ago. Mayweather has a lot of physical problems he has to have taken care of before fights, look at the Mayweather-Hatton 24/7. I don't doubt that he is past his physcial prime if not by much but he is still on such a high level above the competition that it's hard to notice. Also he can compensate it with amazing skill and talent.

people take the piss out jones but they seem to forget he was shit hot until 35 way longer than most boxers

I would say that Jones was past prime by the time of his fight with Harmon, not sure how old he was back then. I thought Pacquiao was past prime by JMM II, but he seems to have gotten another lease of life.
I think the main pont is that if a fighter is exceptional in their prime, then they will still be a damn good fighter even after their prime has ended. Tyson was past prime after his fight with Spinks, but was still a dominant hw until he went to prison in 92 for example

I made a similar point yesterday about boxers in their prime. Most guys peak in their mid to late 20's.
Manny is still in his prime and he's in his 30's. Floyd is also not in his prime anymore.
I'm going with mismanaged, because that just mean's that the fighter when he was in his prime he was wasteing it on losers and bum's, not actually getting anywhere!
But saying that there are many boxers out there that are just rubbish to begin with and some that are not very good with Conditioning!
It really depends and the boxer him/herself!
it's to do with mentality alot of the time, have a close fight, lose a fight, these guys are constantly surrounded by cheerleaders telling them how they the best, they the champs before they even become the champs, eventually it wares on you and you believe it, lose and you'll be questioning yourself
