I'm of course not speaking head-to-head since they're of different size and not talking about achievements either.
Just simply, P4P, at their best, who was the superior fighter?
i voted for vargas
i think someone already said it but i dont think any version of cotto beats ike or wins a controversial dec over winky.
the vargas that fought ike would have beat margo.
but in terms of longviety cotto was better
You can't really go by that because they're not the same size. Cotto drained himself down to 140. Vargas drained himself down to 154.
Cotto would have struggled with Ike, no doubt.
This is the truth.
It also doesn't mean shit like he said. Vargas won three rounds against Oscar. His performance against him is overrated. So he went to war with him. Gatti went to war with Ward. Hell Cotto went to war with Margarito. Quartey was Vargas' shining moment.
It's close, but I think Cotto goes down as the better fighter because he had a respectable run at 140 to go with his solid WW reign. Vargas boiled himself down to 154 for as long as he could. I also think he clearly lost the Winky fight whether it was 8-4 (my card) or 7-5 (understandable).
Vargas domianted African Quartey, Cotto barely got the win over African Clottey.
Vargas went to War with Mexican-American De La Hoya, Cotto quit against Mexican-American Margarito.
That of course has little to do with the question but the answer is 'Ferocious' Fernando Vargas.
Im not understanding what youre trying to say here, especially when you bring race into this
vargas is underrated.......beating quartey like he did is no joke.....of course we're in nsb...the flavor of the month always wins....
its close...but vargas at his peak had a bit more going for him.....
I voted for Cotto but I disagree with that. I think its based on his victories vs Quartey & Winky.
Under normal circumstances I agree, and I don't see anything wrong with picking Vargas.
But we're in nsb....come on now, you're giving most of these people too much credit.

Lolz.
Vargas went to war with PR Trinadad
Cotto went to war with PR Quintania
Cotto at his peak was somethin special. Not a defensive wizard by any means, but knew when to select his shots, stiff hard jab, ring generalship, and truly at the time underrated hand speed. Vargas though to me was the tougher guy out of the two, meaning...he can take an ass whippin a little better and keep fighting. But ultimately, Vargas did lose those fights he got hurt and kept fighting.
But based on overall skill, I got Cotto.
if they were to fight then i would take fernando vargas by late rounds tko. he had the style to beat miguel cotto. plus he was just overall way bigger than cotto.
if were talking accomplishments, then its cotto.
To the people saying that Cotto wouldn't have handled Vargas' opponents, well, why should he have been able to? Cotto boxed at 140 and 147 where as Vargas was a career 154 pounder, plus the TS already stated that's not what this thread is about. But if you do want to compare common opponents, Cotto won a close decision over Mosley where as Vargas lost twice to him, once by brutal KO.
Both guys have had great careers and I actually think that Vargas' fast rise to the top suited his style, I don't think maturation would have helped him too much since his best assets were his strength and raw aggression; he needed the freshness of youth to make him the fighter he was.
I voted for Cotto simply because I believe him to be the superior technician and better overall boxer.
I don't know how anyone can pick one or the other without any doubt.
A lot of people seem to forget Vargas beat Winky and Quartey. Ike was a complete beast at that time and Winky was no walk-over either.
Vargas in his day was the kind of fighter every fan liked and watched. Before he signed to go pro he might of been one of the most highly sought out prospects of the last 15 years by every promoter. I'm a huge Cotto fan, I don't know who was better at their prime but it's hard for me to think Cotto's wins are better than Vargas's.
Dude was amazing. Both are/were great fighters and exciting to watch though.
Quartey had been slowed by inactivity and was moving up in weight. He also just got a rough decision in the De La Hoya fight a year and change earlier. He was a complete beast in the early-mid 90's, Vargas faced a less tenacious Quartey in my opinion.
Otherwise I'll say good post and I'll fukk off now.

vargas was talented as well and he wasnt as 1 dimensional as some may think.
plus he was fighting P4P greatness early in his career he didnt even get to mature and
be ready and better. if they brought him up better he would have been better
75% of the people voting for Vargas will do so on the grounds that "Vargas never quit."
There's nothing wrong with voting Vargas, I think it's very close personally, but to take individual performances when we're judging this on talent and skills is just retarded.
I might as well say "Cotto never got knocked out with one punch, he's better".
Im just showing Vargas some love because I doubt many people replying to the thread ever even watched Vargas..
I say cotto.he is a more complete fighter imo.he could box or slug.he was boxing beautiful the first 6 rounds againt margarito, and tore through gomez easy.i think everyone will agree that vargas was given too much too early.he should never have fought trinidad that early.i think he was only 22 at the time.i give him credit for doing that tho.he didnt win a title and take meaningless defenses like people now adays.i also dont think we cant question either of their hearts.
cotto was winning his bog fihts and the road to greatness he was invicible but plaster handwraps stopped him we all know that cotto was a bad ass before the 4round of july 2008 i really hope steward can help him
Cotto easy, people getting confused. Vargas was a lot bigger than Cotto therefore "Vargas did better against Winky than Cotto would" is a pointless arguement.
some people come up with the most ridiculous arguments to prove a point, even if they don't have to.
