We saw Bernard Hopkins barely throw any punches and a shot, gun shy fighter like Roy Jones was able to be more competitive against him. I know Pavlik is a Middleweight. But I still don't believe his bullshit excuses of why he got schooled back in October of 2008. Before last night, I viewed Martinez-Pavlik as a 50-50 fight. Now I think Martinez will handle him if he can keep his stamina in tact.
I think the reason most people favor Martinez and Williams over him is because they are both better boxers than he is. I don't think it has much to do with his stock dropping after the BHop fight.
Pavlik is going to get schooled again. Both Martinez and PWill will hand him his ass.
No one would've given either of those guys a chance against the undisputed MW champ before he fought Hopkins.
Stupid fight for Pavlik to take, especially when he was only 26. Ruined his career, essentially. Hell he'd been better off fighting Abraham, win or lose.
That ridiculous. That fight was what, nearly two years ago? Bernard Hopkins is in his 40s you know.
And doesn't that make Pavlik look bad to you after he lost to him the way he did?

Well... I think Pavlik isn't damaged. A lot of months passed between Pavlik-BHOP and BHOP-RJJ2. His shitty performance isn't damaged more.
(Altrough I think Martinez will win against him)
Pavlik's stock has been in the toilet ever since Hopkins took him to school.
Why do you think most people favor Martinez and Williams over him?
I see plenty of people favoring Pavlik over Martinez and Williams. I need to read the rest of this thread past the first page though and see if any of them have chimed in.
I used to be one of Pavlik's biggest fans but he has disappointed me greatly since his 1st Taylor bout. Lackluster defense opposition, schooled by Bhop by underestimated him and taking a large paycheck. I honestly feel Martinez will box Pavlik's ears off. Pavlik needs to accumulate punches on his opponent to KO them or wear them down and I honestly don't think he'll touch Martinez enough to do that.
Pavlik had to move up in weight when he fought Hopkins. Martinez has to move up in weight when he fights Pavlik. This fight is a lot closer than people think.
Hopkins isn't the same guy, he's been very inactive to go along with his age. What Hopkins did to Pavlik was just a bigger, great fighter taking the young guy to school. Hopkins-Jones II shouldn't have an effect on anyone's opinion of Pavlik-Martinez.
I'm not too sure if they would be favoured had Pavlik not been embarrassed by Hopkins. He was looked at as the future of the division until then. Williams and Martinez are very good, but they're junior middleweights. Historically junior middleweights aren't supposed to beat middleweights, unless the middleweight champion is below par.
I was about to say something similar. If Pavlik hadn't been shutdown by Hopkins, it'd be -300 for him to knockout Martinez, instead, it's -180 for him to win outright.
"Pavlik by KO and anyone who thinks different is a retard" would be the common post here.
It didn't drop Pavlik's stock more than it already has, Bernard made the #2 P4P look like shit a few months earlier.
a lot of good points...and yes I think the deteriorated bhop handling pavlik is a good illustration that KP doesn't handle slick boxers well at all. I thought Martinez got fuked and I'm quite sure he'll frustrate Pavlik and outwork him all night, if the ghost can't establish a rhythm he brings little to the table.
hopkins is a counter puncher. he cant counter a fighter who doesnt throw anything. even at this stage of his career he'd duplicate what he did vs pavlik against most come forward, 1 dimensional fighters.
you also cant expect a good fight b/t two guys who made a pact to carry eachother.

there are weight classes for a reason, beating people at higher weight classes is considered a great achievement for a reason, the pavlik that fought hopkins and the middleweight king are two different types of beast
and to make it worst, pavlik has always just been a 1 dimensional plodder with no explosiveness

Hopkins has slipped since 08. His reflexes have gotten worse and his speed has dropped a little too. Hopkins Pavlik was a throwback performance to prime hopkins.
