When Miguel Cotto went up to 147 he beat Quintana, Judah, and Urkal all by knockout. He also beat Mosley by decision.
Especially in the Mosley fight, Cotto seemed to outspeed Mosley, he had more power, better stamina, his chin held up better than it had at 140. His timing had even improved.
It must be noted that this invincibility only lasted about a year and a half. I recall Cotto looking like, instead of a thoroughbred, like a slow moving tank. When he fought Mosley and Judah he was slim and trim, against Margarito, he was more filled out. The result was that he was much slower and less sharp. He looked terrible in the Clottey fight I must mention (compared to the Mosley fight).
The truth is, Cotto never did roids. Neither does Manny. What I believe is, that we've seen the pinnacle of Manny Pacquiao against Cotto. I predict after a fight or two now, Manny will slowly start to fill out and lose his form, and his invincibility alike. You could see it a bit in the Clottey fight, he wasn't as sharp as he usually is.
When these fighters move up to 147, they are used to the speed at the lower weight classes and have a huge advantage in reflexes. After a while, they start to fill out and get used to the 147 speed... which is a changeup compared to 140 and 135 and below.
Cotto is weight drained at 140. He could only fight at 140 for so long. Same thing with Pacquiao fighting at 130. Fight night he would be 144-146. You can only do that for so long until you start getting beat by people.
MMA fighters can hydrate 15-25 pounds no problem. They only have to fight for 3-4 rounds.
Stupid thread by a fanboy. Cotto's biggest strength is not his physical abilities (strength, stamina, speed....etc) the things that steroids improves. Its been his skill.
Cotto's skill is extremely under-rated. He has excellent timing and an educated jab and very good counter punching skills.
and when he gets hurt he goes low to the body right away. in torres and judah when they beat him up, he just goes to town on their lower body, some shots a bit dirty, but i love it. he stopped doing that against margarito, maybe because it was so easy to hit his head but i think it was a bad mistake.
If you read the full post, you'll see the point I'm making.
ALL (or most elite) fighters when they first move up to 147 experience a speed/reflex advantage. It's like when a baseball player swings a weighted bat before they get into the batter's box. Similar to when Cotto "outspeeded" Mosley.
judah lost his first fight at WW against spinks. and he knocked spinks out a year or two later.

Maybe it's not the difference in form. But I can see a much bigger difference in movement and even punching. Maybe it has to do with the trainer?
But all I know is, Cotto was much more sharp when he first moved up.
I think it had a lot to do with what Margarito took out of him. I thought Cotto looked just as sharp against Margarito as he did before. Post-Tony, he's really not as sharp.
You make interesting points.
But the Cotto that fought Judah, Urkal, and Mosley wasn't any different than the one that fought Margarito. He was just as fast and his body type looked the same.
To be honest, in the Clottey fight I thought Cotto looked gaunt. He was wayyy skinnier than usual in the ring, it was weird. And Pac didn't show any signs of slipping IMO. It's just really tough to look good against Clottey.
But your point about having speed/reflex advantages when you first move up is an interesting one. I can see that.

Cotto did lose some power when he moved up to 147. But he was struggling to make 140 so of course he was going to perform better when he moved up in weight. Also, Evangelista knew that he couldn't strictly rely on his power punching in such a skilled division, so he added a few other techniques, and made him more of a boxer.
Cotto shoudl have lost to Clottey, but the latter got robbed and when Clottey faced manny he barely threw a punch, either mannys abnormal sizehead scared clottey or cotto has as much power as bradley
Cotto is done at 147. He's like a slow moving tank now, look at him when he first moved up and then now.
He was weight drained at 140, he'd even blow up to the 150s at Jr WW.
I agree. There is a big difference between a fighter busting his butt to make the weight moving up and performing well and a fighter performing well at way above his NATURAL weight.

as good as points you make...i doubt Miguel Cotto is on steroids..

If you look at his weighins at 140 he looked extremely sick. Similar to Morales in his later years. He was really killing himself trying to make weight. Once he moved up he was more comfortable and didn't have to kill himself to make the weight
Cotto already had the power and the speed at 140 pounds. I have no idea if he had stamina issues at 140, but one thing I know is that his chin was weaker at 140 because he was weight drained. And it's common that when a fighter moves up in a weight that is better suited for him, his chin will be tougher because he won't be weight drained.
Ps: You're a troll, or a definition of pactard. There's a lot of good posters that are fan of Pacquiao, but you're not one of them, you're a nuthugger.
