Lately we've seen and heard rumours of an influx of boxers who're retired or near retirement from boxing, shifting over to the MMA realm. My question is this: do MMA's feel as comfortable with their striking abiliities to switch to boxing once their mixed martial arts career is over? And would any of these MMA's have successes solely as boxers. Who?
It'd be hard for them to switch over to boxing after practicing just MMA.
Boxing involves a lot more than just the technique of throwing punches. You got footwork, head movement, feints, working out of the clinch, all the nuances.
A Boxer for that matter wouldn't be super successful in the MMA either unless he got a favorable matchup. But a Boxer would always have a punchers chance in the MMA.
Most MMA fighters with their sloppy ass striking skills wouldn't stand a chance in Boxing though
BJ. Penn has the boxing ability to be a good juniorwelterweight boxer. He'd just need to do it 100% and get the stamina and i guarantee he could do well( probably top 20). Most MMA fighters aren't good boxers but some very few of them( coming from a boxing / muay thai background like Diabate) could be good boxers.
If Kermit Cintron, who was a fukkin WRESTLER, started at 19/20 y old and made it to the top, then why a gifted MMA fighter couldn't do it. Do you think there is a curse that if you learn jiujitsu and kicks, your chin will get weak and that your hands will become slow?
Excuses, an MMA champ got owned by an old boxer.
You can't make excuses, "well, this guy didn't do this, so its not fair".
BS.
The entire premise of MMA is basically, "anything goes".
You'll never see an old MMA cat come into a boxing ring and beat one of its champs.I tend to agree with this.
MMA fighters can't use their hands for crap...I've seen some at the gym swinging their arms with no rotation and swinging wide pitty patting the bags lol
Boxers wouldn't win any fight in MMA either unless promoters put a favorable matchup . Yes , Ray Mercer has knocked out Tim Sylvia in like 6 seconds but Sylvia hasn't taken anybody down in his life which means he was going to stand with a former world champion boxer . Now put Mercer in there with a wrestler , he is going to get beat up badly with punches he cant defend from his back on the ground . Same with Toney , if Dana White wants him to win a fight in the UFC he will put him in there with some brawler guy who has weak wrestling .
No MMA fighter would do well in boxing and no boxer would do well in MMA but here you could give them opponents who match up well with them , unlike boxer vs MMA fighter in a boxing about .

Apples and Oranges...
I don't think a seasoned MMA striker can hang with a seasoned Pro boxer because it's a different mindset as opposed to MMA where you have to not only worry about punches, but also kicks, takedowns, submissions. But, a lot of MMA fighters today have stepped up their striking game and have Boxing trainers along with JuJitsu trainers to get an all around game.
It's easy to say MMA guys can't punch for shit coming from a Pure Boxing fan, but guys like Anderson Silva and BJ Penn actually have above average Boxing skills and have shown it.
How about Liddell or Spider Silva. They both appear to be pretty good strikers. And Spider has some good side to side movement as well as good counter punching abilities.
Here's Silva, in his second professional boxing match, against a guy making his debut:
I'm sure some could find SOME success, but because boxing is such a specialized sport, it requires specialize training from a very young age though there are exceptions.
I think boxers that switch over to MMA have a better chance at success than MMA fighters who switch over to boxing.
One advantage that boxers have over most MMA fighters is their striking ability. That can be used to a great effect in MMA because they have a better chance at winning the fight if they're standing up.
With MMA fighters, they're pretty much trained in kicking, groundwork and submissions. I might get criticism for this, but I don't think they're in the same league of punching ability as boxers are. Even if they trained for it, it would take a long time and a lot of effort to be able to compete with the elite in boxing. They're just not as fast and don't have as good technique.I don't think you deserve any flak for your opinion. Great post.

they can't punch for shit. they wouldn't make in it boxingThat's usually my argument. Got me into a fight with an inmate who claimed 'his style' of martial art was far superior to boxing while I spent the weekend in jail. Boxing won. lmao
Some guys like Vitali Klitschko and Matt Skelton have had success switching over to boxing from kickboxing/MMA.
Fedor would probably make a wicked CW if he could lose the gut.
