Talking in another thread about Tyson in a 1983 amateur fight...for those interested :) you know your out there :) ...I'll post a few here and there...the more interesting ones...like, for example, at 132 pounds in the 1983 New England Golden Gloves Irish Mickey Ward scored a decision over future WBA champion Joey Gamache...also, in the Western Mass. Golden Gloves tourney future welterweight champ Marlon Starling won two titles in FIVE tries in the late 1970's...losing to Wilbur Cameron, Felix Nance and Kevin Rooney...
for the person who asked about the current amateur scene, I know that here in Connecticut we have two VERY talented olymic hopefuls in Toka Khan Cleary (132 from Providence) and Tremaine Wiliams (123 from Connectocut)...
Considering its size,Providence has been producing quite a few world class amateurs lately.

sorry so late to reply...I've heard that about Lopez but there is no way to really verify that, though...in any event, he turned pro at a young age so if he was unbeaten it likely wasn't a record compiled against elite amateurs...
Was Ricardo Lopez really undefeated as an amateur?
You still following the amateurs right now? Who's someone to look out for in the future?
Great thread btw.
Eric "The Energizer" Fagan of Providence never turned pro...he's still only about 28 years old now...sored amateur victories over the likes of Mike Oliver, Chad Dawson and Brian Viloria...
I remember Pernell Whitaker saying Johnny Bumphus was the best...another guy said Bernard Taylor...Paul Gonzalez...none of them dominated a weight class like Mark did, though...I have heard lots of different tally's for guys, usually 154-2, crazy stuff like that...hard to really say what is accurate...Breland's was not hard to figure, though, because with only one loss being claimed, I am sure that if someone else beat him they would stand up and mention it...you get another guy saying he was 163-4 as an amateur, well, there might be 11 guys out there thinking there were one of the four LOL...me, personally, I would like to see a guy have AT LEAST 50 amateur fights and some national experience underneath his belt before going pro...at least 20 years old, too...
thanks for the reply, i forgot about this lol
appreciate it ice
whose the best usa amateur u saw live or just heard about apart from breland
do u know the amateur records of guys like
don curry
meldrick taylor
ray leonard
and when do u think its time for a young fighter to turn over to the pro ranks - age and experience wise?

Marlon Starling boxed in the local Golden Gloves here 5 years in a row (1975-1979) and lost in three of them, to Kevin Rooney, Felix Nance and Wilbur Cameron

I remember Robert Salters. I fought with a guy, Kermit Fitzpatrick, who lost to him in the national finals. I think that it Golden Gloves but it could have been the ABFs in '88, or maybe it was the trials. lol............Rockin':boxing:
I was there for that fight, it was the 88 ABF's...I also saw Kermit at the 1986 nationals in Iowa...
Didn't Woody Clark beat Greg Page in the 1976 Eastern Olympic Trials, flooring him twice en route to a decision?
Not sure about that one...sorry SO LONG TO respond...Woody was a really good amateur though, huh???
