With Robert Guerrero out of his March 27 lightweight fight against Michael Katsidis because of his wife's serious illness, interim junior welterweight titlist Marcos Maidana's defense against Victor Cayo moves up to main event status on HBO's "Boxing After Dark" card at a site to be determined. The new co-feature isn't set yet, but the leading possibility is a rematch between Ali Funeka and Joan Guzman, who would meet for a vacant lightweight belt. Katsidis was offered Funeka, but he turned it down. Funeka pummeled Guzman when they met for the vacant belt on HBO in November, but it was ruled a draw in one of the most controversial decisions of 2009. Guzman's side is willing to take the fight. Gary Shaw, who co-promotes South Africa's Funeka, said he was waiting to hear back from Funeka's manager about accepting the bout. Funeka-Guzman II became possible when Rolando Reyes declined to face Funeka because he didn't want to go to South Africa under the terms of Branco Sports' winning purse bid. Once Reyes declined, the IBF moved to its next available contender, which was Guzman. Dan Rafael
I don't understand this at all. What is it with these guys ducking fights these days.
Boxing has gone soft.
Then stop watching? KAT GIVES IT ALL HE HAS AND IS WILLING TO DIE IN THE RING. YET DUMBASSES LIKE YOU SAY HES DUCKING PEOPLE? MAN........
P.S. 2 FIGHTS AGO FUNEKA WASNT KNOWN TO YALL NOW HE'S A PRIME LISTON. HA KAT BEING SCARED
just because kats didn't agree to fight someone doesn't mean the guy is scared.
there r fighters all the time calling him out. it was kevin mitchells turn just yesterday. katsidis isn't obliged to accept just because of a request. the guy wants to fight marquez. and people have the gall to say michael is weak ffs.
wooow i think he'd do pretty good in the inside with his power. but hes simply afraid nd dnt want none. i hope guzman comes in better shape with a better gameplan
Mate i think he is waiting for a call from Khan's camp, Katsidis is a good option for Amir, another lightweight having to move up and a good name, rather than fight a genuine 140'er again!!!
As if. :laff2:
Two reasons why Kats would never enter the mind of Khan's camp at this stage, or ever:
1. He's like a LW version of Maidana who loves a good scrap. The bloodier, the better. Funnily enough, Khan used to love a good scrap prior to Prescott (anyone who's seen those fights live will remember full well how he waded in like nobody's business), but nowadays his main gameplan is to stick and move. Makes sense, I guess.
2. He has even less name value than anyone mentioned on the Khan shortlist so far. Marquez, Malignaggi, Ortiz, Campbell, Maidana or anyone at 140 is more known and respected than Katsidis at 135. Tremendous risk, low reward.
I'd love for Khan-Kats to happen, but I genuinely see the latter pushing for the Diaz rematch before anything else. It's probably a chip he needs to get off his shoulder, and rightfully so. He'll 'ave the cross-eyed bastage next time.
the fighter who wanted to fight funeka and took it too him and gave him a chance at his titles was who ppl.
your love to hate him but he gave your want your asking for now, somebody to fight this beast of a mutha****a at 135.
Ali funeka i believe is the man at the division he just need his chance to prove it
i guess he got to fight guzman again which is rightly so
El Cabron ill take that bet i must admit though i don't know much about valero i caught his 3 rounds of his last fight
Wonder how much GBP influenced him to do it. They say it was GBP who offered him the fight, but I don't believe that for one second. Oscar is just greedy like Arum and won't go outside the box.
Well, if according to you guys everyone is ducking Funeka then I suppose you're giving Guzman respect cuz so far he is the only one willing to take that fight.
I hope it happens without the 'drunk judges' I mean I am a Guzman fan but I knew he lost that fight once the fight was over.\
Let's get it on!!!
his height, reach, and work rate make him a tough match up for pretty much everyone at lw but his chin seems vulnerable enough where I think that some of the lw's with power have a good chane of putting him down and out
based on what? being dropped by one of the hardest punchers in the 135 division? campbell can bang, if he hits u flush like that you are hitting the deck.
funeka seems to have excellent punch resistance if u ask me.
and its not just his height, reach and workrate. he is so versetaille he can mix it up. he can box very well, he can outwork you or he can sit down on his punches and knock your lights out. he hasnt shown that against campbell and guzman but he can really bang.
the only flaw i see in him is a lack of in fighting, thats it. he has everything else in abundance. physicly, mentally and technicly. excellent fighter, and hes only gonna get better.
i could make a post pointing the finger at the fighter who popularized this mentality, but i wouldnt wanna create an uproar.
this sht is lame.
i wish fighters and promoters were less business savvy.
Damn, Kats doesn't need to be doing this shit. He should be jumping at any big fight he can get right now, because he'll be world champ going in regardless. I would've preferred Funeka to Diaz, because there'd be hella more challenge there.
I just hope he doesn't go for a soft touch, whoever it'll be.
