Has there ever been a Mexican Heavyweight champion of the world?
it's just funny how you never hear of any Mexican Heavyweights,or even anything from Middleweight to Heavyweight on a world stage, just think it's remarkable if not as it's a country so rich in boxing history like it's a big part of life for Mexicans for it's always a country i associate boxing with probably more than any other.
anyone enlighten me on this subject?
You really have to respect Ruiz. He's not a crowd pleaser but he did a lot with a lil bit and went pretty hard in every fight.
I doubt he's the savior from that clip. I would like to keep an eye on him though.
He was "lucky" to have caught the opponent cold in this fight... Anyway he signed with the Golden Boy Promotions which is the place to be if you want a shot at a title... So if he doesn't lose his next fights he's probably gonna get a chance before the end of 2012 and we'll see...
All Puerto Ricans are already that.
Yup, and you are what?? a poncho correct?
I feel bad for you..I really do!
Trying so hard to be mexican but the native mongols wont accept you because you were born in the states. AHAHAHAHAHAHA
Go slice your veins homie.
Really??? Don King did all kinds of shady stuff to make that fukker a paper champion!! I cant believe anyone would be proud to claim John Ruiz as theeir own!!!!!!!!! i believe he was from around Boston and did not speak any spanish, to me thats an American!!
I don't really care what a roach like you has to say.Your opinion is worthless to me and to most people in the U.S.A.
Stfu and go cheer for Arreola you hater. you just mad that's all!!!!!!
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

no.
but as for Mexicans above Middleweight, Yaqui Lopez was an excellent lightheavyweight who fought in a stacked division. had he been in a weaker division or one with 5 belts like today, he no doubt would have been a champion.
his fights with Matthew Saad Muhammad were absolute wars.
There will be more and more Mexican heavyweights..It has to do nutrition during childhood especially access to meat..Height has as much to do with nutrition as genetics..their are plenty of wide build genetics in Mexico all you need is a 5'11 or so to stack muscle on and you have a good heavy weight..I don't believe the current tall fighter domination is the end game of boxing. We wont have an NBA invasion problem.Power is generated from the ground and in alot of ways being shorter has an advantage of generating and delivering that power faster and in closer ranges. We just need to relearn some of the Old school inside fighting techniques to make clenching a painful experience..Once you can mitigate the clench you have taken away half of the fighting tall Strategy.. If any Lanky fighter tries to lay his weight on me he's going to pay for it.
John “The Quietman" Ruiz, is a former American professional boxer of Puerto Rican descent, Ruiz is the first Latino Heavyweight Champion and former two-time WBA World Heavyweight champion.
Mexicans are midgets for the mostpart.

The next big name in mexican boxing (besides Alvarez which is already a big name) is definately going to be Marco Antonio Periban, and he fights at supermiddleweight. This guy is going to be huge... The next "Maravilla" Martinez-like sensation.
man i think he fights this weekend.I would like to see more of this guy.

chillax, imo chris arreola will become a champion, might be a paper champion but still.. he has enough skills to do it, i dont like him anymore because he lacks dedication...
I am a tall Mexican at 6 ft 2 inches, I think I am actually 6-3
Anyways when I go to concerts and shit in Mexico I feel weird, I am the tallest one in the crowd most of the time, but this is not always the case. This January there were like 3 brothers around 6-6 and they were athletic, they were probably bball players or something. But yeah, most Mexicans are not built to be heavyweights, at least not the boxers.
Mexicans just aren't built big enough to be heavy weight contenders. I'm the second tallest person in my ENTIRE family. I'm talking about extended etc. I'm 5'10 about 200lbs.Well it all depends really, all kinds of nationalities can have shorter families. I am 5'9 and I constantly see my self looking up at some Mexicans. I have uncles who are 5'10, 5'11, cousins who are 6'2, 6', 5'11' 5'10. Then my cousin's cousin is a tall dude too at 6'1 and he lives in Mexico. Just the other day we had visitors at my house from my parents home town in Mexico and the man is tall, he must have been a solid 6'1 and I remember his son who did not come is tall as well. Just all depends.
All the heavier weight class mexican fighters never get anywhere, Arreola has a chance but hes fat, Pavlik has been exicuting contending Mexican middleweights, Andrade didnt make it happen, etc. There are big people in Mexico but they dont join boxing as much as the smaller ones do.
I am hoping super middleweight up and comer Marco Antonio Periban can make some noise, unlike many Mexican fighters, he has a solid amateur background.
